How Well Do You Know Your Geography?

There was a big bruhahaha over an obvious gaff by Sarah Palin. (Well, there were many....)

Here is a little test to knock you back a notch or two.

How many mistakes did you make? How would you fair under the scrutiny of the public eye?

I'm totally shameful.... Please don't nominate me for ANYTHING!

5 mistakes. The trouble with African countries, they keep changing there name every other revolution. And Palin knew there were only 50 states in the union.

I did well with the African countries and middle East, but bit it on the former Soviet Republics.

There is a very funny 80's Britcom called Yes, Minister (later Yes, Prime Minister after he changed offices). One memorable episode features a crisis on St. George's Island which, they think, is part of the British Empire...if only they could find it on a map!

I didn't even try. How many residents of those countries could do the same with our 50 states? I know I would do better with a map of Europe. I have little interest in the Middle East. If it wasn't for their oil, I suspect the US would just let them butcher themselves.

I had one of these before.. I had a goal to do it every day so that I would actually learn geography (I've always been absolutely terrible with geography, even with the 50 states) but I did that for about a week and didnt get any better so I gave up.. I guess I'm a quitter..

I am working on an project for the International Year of Astronomy with science centers around the world. Two of them threw me for a loop and I had to look them up to find out where the blazes they were (one was a city in Belguim and the other was the newest province of Canada...formed in 1999 which surprised me since I had to memorize the provinces as a kid and thought I knew them all!)

I have always loved maps...every time I am on plane, I take out the in flight magazine and turn to the back to look at the route maps and see where they all fly to.

The countries have changed names quite a bit since we had to memorize them all. Hate to admit some of the "stans" are new to me. Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzistan... It is all I can do just to pronounce them.

There's a new country that was just formed from one of the Soviet Union republics. It's known for the high number of taverns per capita it has within its borders. The name of it is Imtodrunktostand.

I did pretty well, but geography was one of my better subjects.

Doesn't Kyrgyzstan sound like it was supposed to be called something else, but they were all drunk when they named it so it came out like this?

AvengingAngel said...

Logjam, What's the capitol of Imtodrunktostand?

OrbsCorbs said...

AA, I was on another board where one guy said he visited Kyrgyzstan. I accused him of making the name up.

Perhaps the capital of Imtodrunktostand is Mybedisspinning
