Laura Bush Buys China for Half A Million

No, not the country!

Freakin' WOW! In this economy? And with people starving around the world, the suffering of those with disease that could benefit from research money, the loss of homes and jobs of honest workers... And not to mention, the soldiers who are risking their lives for our freedom!

Makes even *me* almost hate the American infidels...

I guess the $250,000 China that Hillary bought was becoming too passe to eat from?

Holy crap...I'd hate to be the dishwasher that broke a plate.

As a person who has an unexplainable fixation on china, I'd give anything to see it;-) I have several sets myself, mostly of the Goodwill variety... but some of it is quite nice, and I adore it!
I can't blame Laura for her splurge, better than some a rich girl like herself could have indulged in. Now if she had an apron collection I'd say we were soul sisters;-)

Ridiculous.

I dunno, it's private money, but it does seem odd to spend it two weeks before leaving office. With hundreds of billions being tossed around here and there while Joe Blow and family die a slow death in Hometown, USA, nothing makes sense anyways.

So what do they do with the old ones, put them on EBay?

At least it was private foundation money as pointed out in the report that was used to pay for the dishes. Unlike the bank guys that get a federal bailout then go party hearty on the taxpayer dime.

It all makes me sick as I have just become one of the good hard working honest people caught in the layoff tornato riping through our country. Here I sit waiting for my little check and she tosses $500,000.00 away on plates.I've been waiting on an unemployment check from Dec 21st. Hey Barb could ya put some food on one of them plates and send it here my kids are hungary.

OMG I was so caught up in my rant I called her Barb.I ment Laura. Well either one of them could send us a plate of food.....

Cyndi, I bet the china is gorgeous... but, not the point.

Even though it is not government money, it is entirely oh-so-wrong in the hard times our country is facing...

It reminds me of another famous person whose answer to the statement that the people are hungry, they have no bread, "Well, then, let them eat cake!"

Hey, she's keeping the people making the china employed, yes?

I am among many who believe this is totally outrageous!

Whether the The White House Historic Association paid for them or not, it is just another way for the Bush’s to say, “We do not care about you America”!

Lenox has been selected as the manufacturer of the dinnerware. Just imagine what you, I or Abby could do with a $492,798, 320 14-piece place setting.

Let see, that works out to $35,199.86 per setting or $1,538.99 per piece.

I have to quit here or I will start to use potty words....

For $500,000-I would buy a NICE house and stick to Corelle. Don't need the fancy stuff.

You've obviously never worked for the government... during my brief stint as a guv'mint employee my boss was able to use a $10,000 grant to study spanish-- in Mexico-- for two weeks (!!). And go figure, I never once heard her utter so much as an "hasta manana", even after her grueling two week trip language intensive;-)
Laura Bush is pretty level headed, I'd suspect the purchase was from a "use it or lose it" grant set aside for such a purchase and she was asked to take care of it before hubby left office.
(p.s. I didn't watch the video until now, initially thought the Bushes bought the china from their own funds. It sure was gorgeous tho, sigh! Damn silly government people... kk: if you try to find a point to what they do, you'll lose your mind, lol!)

Not much mind left to lose here, so no big loss...

I have never agreed with the "use it or lose it" mentality for funding programs and purchases. It happens all the time in government and institutions. RUSD is well noted for this... who benefits with this waste?

Now this is just me... if Laura was really considering the people of the United States, wouldn't it have been tremendous if she could have used her power and status to see that that money went to better use? Maybe try to set some new "white house history" for the society and renegotiate the intendees of these funds?

This is why I remain a peon or serf in the class system. I think too much. To get ahead, you have to be pompous and idiotic, I guess.
