"Becker deserves apology"

Thomas Casey of Racine has written a letter to the Journal Times in which he advocates forgiveness for former mayor Gary Becker: http://www.journaltimes.com/articles/2009/02/20/letters_to_editor/doc499cc239de745565190860.txt.

Mr. Casey apparently believes that Mr. Becker was acting on "natural inclinations" when he pursued sexual relations with someone he believed to be a 14 year old girl.

Well, there's further proof that I am not natural: I have never desired sex with a child in my entire life.

What the hell is the matter with me? :(

You've gotta freaking be kidding me! Did he NOT read the detailed online chat that the "poor, misguided, unlucky, Mr. Becker" engaged in? This is a crime! Period. You DON'T talk to children about such things. Period. Scapegoat? No, it is a crime!

If this is normal, I am certainly that much more thrilled to say I'm irregular.

When the Beckerphile story broke, there were all sorts of comments on the Journal Times site. What was most disconcerting, though, were the occasional comments by those making excuses for such actions or explaining the behavior as "normal." A number of people pointed out that in different cultures, at different times, people would marry when they were in their young teens. Of course, they failed to mention that life expectancy in those times was only 30 years and marrying someone to start a family is quite different from preying on strangers' children. Other cultures have burned witches at the stake, too, but I see little need to revive the practice today, except maybe in Becker's case.

What was most upsetting were those that claimed Becker fell under the spell of girls who "tempt" old men. See, the internet is full of girls seeking to entrap men with their wily charms. Wtf? That is soooo sick....
