Drunken driving bill

The new bill, is it a good thing or a bad thing?

On the good side, they made some nice changes. On the bad side, the cost is going to be another war on who is going to pay for it.

Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen warned the measure would result in cuts to other areas of law enforcement because of inadequate funding. And the tougher law is expected to cost up to $82 million a year. A fraction of that cost - $12.2 million - will be paid with new fees on offenders. There is no funding mechanism for the rest of the expenses.

Our idiot Governor Doyle said, “the Legislature should allow police to conduct sobriety checkpoints...”.

What is he, a communist or socialist?

As for me, I would like to see for a 3rd drunken driving offence, their vehicle be confiscated and auctioned off. Some might say, ‘what about if he or she has a family and they need the vehicle’. My answer is “too bad so sad”. They know in advance what can and will happen if they are caught for a 3rd offence.

3rd offence, ARE YOU KIDDING ME. How much is the life of one of YOUR loved ones worth to you as a taxpayer? I will GLADLY pay my part of the cost, if it HELPS keep drunks off the roads.

Toad, you are right.

I can see where ANYONE can make a mistake one time. Two, and you have a problem. When you hit three some serious measures need to be taken. Why allow these people to own a vehicle. If the spouse goes and gets another car and allows the drunk to take it...lock the spouse up also.

Drivers license do not mean anything to these people. There are some out there with 4th, 5th, 6 drunken driving violations. That away the vehicle! Make it so expensive for them they cannot afford toilet paper.

It's all about the money. The liquor lobby and tavern league have deep pockets in Wisconsin. They contribute heavily to our legislators and they lobby hard. That is the truth behind the BS when they say things like,"The political landscape in Wisconsin now is such that the best we can hope for is a minor improvement in our drunk driving laws." It simply means that our legislators are bought off by the booze, beer and wine industries. Study after study has shown that the majority of the people in Wisconsin favor bringing our DUI laws more in line with other states. But it's not about that.

I've said that all along. Take their cars. I have cut down on my out of the house cocktails because I can't afford a ticket. If my car is in the equation I'd be lost. AND friends would be very hisitant to allow any one else to drive their car if they were drunk.
