SICK PAY

There has been controversy over sick pay where some groups/voters claim business should be required to offer sick pay.

Talking with several individuals the range of sick pay they receive at their jobs varies substantially, anywhere from 3 to 7 in a rolling year.

My question is: “should a business be “REQUIRED BY LAW” to offer sick pay?

Salaried employees typically receive their regular paycheck If they miss a day of work. The reason being, they are paid a specific dollar amount per year, and do not receive overtime pay for hours worked beyond the normal 40 hrs. per wk. and It usually cannot be changed unless they have a temp. layoff. The company STILL keeps track of how many day's a person Is away from their job, and should you exceed their limit (whatever they choose) you will be looking for a new job. The only exception Is for the people that run the company. They can be gone as much as they like, and should you not like that. You can find yourself another job.

I've only had sick pay when I've worked for major corporations.

I don't know about the govt forcing business to do anything. I don't like it.

With the global economy, I think maybe we've seen the golden age for US workers. I don't see the rest of the world coming up to our standard of living anytime soon. I think ours will sink much quicker than theirs will rise.

We are WAY too spoiled over here.. Not only do we get 480 days of paid maternity leave, 5 weeks vacation (minimum) you also get 10 sick days a year.. This is the basics that all working people have a right to here. It's going to be hard to come back to The States and get used to the working conditions there..

I am lucky to have lots of vacation and sick leave where I work (in addition to 10 paid holidays per year, including "Rodeo Day").

If you don't pay people enough for them to take a day off without pay and you don't give them sick days, well, there be problems.

I think they actually give us too many sick days.. (did I say that out loud?) We get no personal days off for other important things, so if you have something REALLY important, you have to claim you are sick, and not get caught, which leads me to TONS of guilt... or take a pay deduct and actually GIVE them back the unused sick days and the subsequent pay at the end of the year. I am so bad with the guilt!
