"Pattern or Practice"

"The story of how the small town of Racine waged war on African-American and Hispanic bar owners to drive them out of the changing town."

"In the past six years in the City of Racine 13 minority owned bars or nightclubs and 2 white owned bars with minority patrons have been closed while in contrast no white establishments have been affected."

This is so ugly, I barely know how to put my thoughts into words. Instead of celebrating and enjoying each others culture and differences, we have to live in a small world and choose ignorance and racism.

I really hope this article is not correct in its representation of the way Racine operates or the thought process of the majority of people in Racine.

Cry me a river….

Seems like they forgot about City Haul Lounge, they had to clean up their act and did. They even had to shut down for a couple weeks, although they did make a deal with the city they would close one day a week for 10 weeks, which is quite a loss of income.

They got busted once, underage drinking and firearms. I would need a few more sets of hands to count on my fingers the amount of times the police have been called to Fair’s place on 6th street.

I do know a few ‘white’ bar owners who fear the same and the ‘back’ owners when it comes to fights and checks for under age. They talk to their bartenders and make sure everything is on the up and up and they squelch the would be troublemakers right away.

It’s a catch-22 thing. The police want the bar owners to call so they can assist in stopping anything out of control…part of that “Protect and Serve” thing, but where do you draw the line on how many times you have to call for assistance. This is where people like Fair are complaining they are being picked on from the city because he is black.

My problem is the double standard. George's and Kenny's have each had shootings. The Licensing Committee "filed" those incidents. If a minority owned bar had the same problems, though, they'd be put out of business.

15 closings of minority bars in 6 years, but not one white one. That just seems too skewed.

I've been reading about this in the Communicator News. They had a story about the old Cruise Inn next to the railroad tracks on State St. Back when the city wanted the property as part of the transit center, railroad and bus terminal thing, Mayor Becker walked into the place and told the owner that he better sell the property to the city because they were going to take away his liquor license if he didn't. And they call others "thugs."

It's like old Chicago around here. Everything is done on the basis of who you know, not what is best for Racine.

MY opinion. If It looks like a "Pattern" It probably Is. A person would have to have their head buried so deep In the sand to not know that Racism Is Alive and Well In Racine, and always has been. NOW, that being said, a LONG history of problems at Taverns frequented by Black's In particular are known to be true. I would love someone to tell me HOW the owner of a Tavern Is supposed to control his/her patrons while they are on the premises? They can hire security to handle problems, and call Police, for problems, (that may come back and haunt them) but REMEMBER, the owner would have to be crazy to want this trouble at their business. NOW, If the City of Racine would BUILD a relationship with these owners, as being willing to HELP them somehow with their problem, perhaps something good could come out of this, instead of charges of Racism?

The city works with white owners - minorities just get the plug pulled. Dickert's a racist. Everyone knows that.
