"Why I changed my mind on weed"

By Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CNN Chief Medical Correspondent

"Watch Dr. Sanjay Gupta's groundbreaking documentary 'WEED' at 8 p.m. ET August 11 on CNN."

"(CNN) -- Over the last year, I have been working on a new documentary called 'Weed' The title 'Weed' may sound cavalier, but the content is not.

"I traveled around the world to interview medical leaders, experts, growers and patients. I spoke candidly to them, asking tough questions. What I found was stunning.

"Long before I began this project, I had steadily reviewed the scientific literature on medical marijuana from the United States and thought it was fairly unimpressive. Reading these papers five years ago, it was hard to make a case for medicinal marijuana. I even wrote about this in a TIME magazine article, back in 2009, titled 'Why I would Vote No on Pot.'

"Well, I am here to apologize.

"I apologize because I didn't look hard enough, until now. I didn't look far enough. I didn't review papers from smaller labs in other countries doing some remarkable research, and I was too dismissive of the loud chorus of legitimate patients whose symptoms improved on cannabis.

"Instead, I lumped them with the high-visibility malingerers, just looking to get high. I mistakenly believed the Drug Enforcement Agency listed marijuana as a schedule 1 substance because of sound scientific proof. Surely, they must have quality reasoning as to why marijuana is in the category of the most dangerous drugs that have 'no accepted medicinal use and a high potential for abuse.'"

Anything smoked is going to have detrimental effects on the lungs. Mostly, this big scare tactic and law enforcement reefer madness has to do with money, just like anything else.

My mom told me that Racine was a huge grower of hemp, as a commercial product. It grew wild along the train tracks where she grew up on the north side of town. That was before it became a known as a pleasant drug of choice. They came in and removed the wild plants and burned the area.

I just saw a news segment that said that marijuana has shown to be as effective in treating some epilepsy patients equal to or better than the normally prescribed toxic chemicals, such as depakote, which have a much higher rate of organ failure and negative reproductive health issues.

Time to de-mask the scare out there, and be more open and receptive to what is readily available and could be very inexpensive. Making it legal, controlled, and overall safer to use if regulated, would put a hurt on the black market and stop a lot of drug related violence.

Just like Bill Clinton, I never inhaled.... lololol

There was a story a few weeks ago about a mother giving her young son medicinal pot for grand mal seizures. He was having almost 200 a day. Now they are almost gone.

People who are undergoing chemo don't have any appetite which hinders the process as the body isn't getting any nutrients. Giving them pot gets their appetite back. It's okay to give them heavy duty narcotics but oh dear God, not the pot.

There are (in my opinion) too many reasons why it should be legalized and too many archaic ones as to why it shouldn't. It's a hell of a lot better than alcohol.

Can you imagine how much more room our prisons would have if they quit busting pot smokers?

Can you imagine how much money the government would take in if they legalized and taxed it. I think we might get out of debt.

Just sayin...........

You smoke it? No wonder I didn't get high. I was snorting it. Lotsa green boogers.

It would be different if the government had some scientific reason for keeping pot illegal, but there is none. It's been 80 years of scare tactics and lies. One man decided reefer is the devil's tool and the whole nation suffers for it.

Illinois has become the 20th state to allow medical marijuana. We should be 21st, but we won't. The booze industry is way too strong in Wisconsin.

I think medical marijuana should be allowed, and pot should be decriminalized.

One of the reasons that there are so few studies on the effects of marijuana is because our government makes it almost impossible for researchers to obtain. Allow studies to be done. Find out the truth about risks and benefits.

kk is right about smoking. Smoking anything, except fish, is a cardiovascular risk. You can eat pot, but the dosage is more problematic with that. After eating, it takes an hour or two for the pot to affect you. Often, it knocks you on your ass.

Vaporization is another method for ingesting marijuana: http://www.theweedblog.com/smoking-marijuana-vs-vaporizing-marijuana-infographic/

They'd probably take all the fun out of it and give you foul tasting little white THC pills that cause you to vurp.
