I still have some patterns stashed in my fabric box that look like that. McCall's was another major pattern maker. I worked while in high school in the fabric department of a major retailer in Elmwood Plaza. Sewing and measuring fabric taught me quickly how to deal with fractions. The customers would stand with their patterns and fire off yardage they needed... 1/3 of a yard for the belt of this and 2 3/4 of a yard for the dress and and another 7/8 of a yard for the vest... you'd have to know how to add those fractions on the fly.
