"Mount Pleasant to discuss roundabout"

From The Journal Times.com:

MARK SCHAAF mark.schaaf@journaltimes.com4

"MOUNT PLEASANT — The Mount Pleasant Village Board may vote on a resolution tonight opposing a roundabout at the intersection of Memorial Drive and Durand Avenue.

"The state Department of Transportation is evaluating whether to put a roundabout or new traffic signals at the intersection as part of a reconstruction of Durand Avenue (Highway 11), from Kearney Avenue to Highway 32.

"A resolution in front of the board supports 'maintaining a traditional-style intersection with automatic signal lights,' according to a meeting agenda. Other resolutions related to the project call for maintaining vehicular access to Durand Avenue from Capital Drive and a reduced median on Durand allowing large trucks to drive over it if necessary.

"The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. at Village Hall, 8811 Campus Drive.

"The DOT's preliminary plans for Durand Avenue also include new pavement, storm sewer repair, bicycle accommodations, improved pedestrian accommodations, new sidewalk on the south side of the road and new street lighting.

"Construction is tentatively set for 2020, at the earliest."

Interesting comment on the Journal Times story:

MarkH
"Why is this community so provincial and anti- roundabout? Why not trust the traffic and highway professionals? These reduce accidents. Does the village board know more than DOT professionals?"
Mark Hertzberg

Mr. Hertzberg, of course, is a retired photographer from the Journal Times.  In fact, I think he may have headed the photography department when he retired.  I've always admired Mr. Hertzberg's photographic talents, if not his opinions.  I believe that he cares deeply for Racine.

Mr. Hertzberg, It's obvious you don't have a clue what a Roundabout entails. BRAINS. We have one In the tiny town of Mauston, Wi. Now, for the person that know's how to drive, and understand rules of the road etc. It's OK. Our's Is such a problem, that NOW ALL semi trucks that are within the Roundabout have the Right of Way. Should you get into an accident within the Roundabout with a semi, you will be found at fault, and receive a citation. If you don't believe me, check with the DOT. Our Roundabout serves no real purpose, other than the fact the STATE paid for It, rather than the city having to pay for the typical Signal, and cross walk Signal. Some idiot was hired by the DOT from Europe, and thinks these things are just wonderful, but the fact Is, THEY ARN'T. So many of them exist between the Interstate, and Baraboo, It's almost comical. They are costly, In the purchases needing to be made of private property, and silly. I will however admit the rate of deadly accidents are diminished greatly at VERY dangerous intersections, like Durand, and Lathrop, or Durand, and HWY. 31, or Washington, and HWY. 31, Of course In that silly City cars roll over on normal City Streets now. Luckily I have been gone for 23 years.

What is with Wisconsin and roundabouts? I hate them, especially the one by City Hall. They are too confusing.

There were many in MN. And I got to learn to maneuver them. Just take your time.. and let everyone go first. LOL
