CALEDONIA — After surviving a few close calls, the Kmart in Caledonia, 5141 Douglas Ave., is scheduled to close in mid-December.
Larry Costello, Public Relations Director at Transformco, the company that owns Kmart and Sears, confirmed on Friday that the store is scheduled to close in mid-December and plans to hold a liquidation sale in mid-September. Costello declined to comment on why the Caledonia store was chosen.
Sears Holdings put out a list on Aug. 6 of stores closing which did not include the Caledonia store but a sign outside the doors stated that location would not accept new layaway contracts.

I stopped going there years ago.  They never had more than one or two checkout lanes open.  I wasn't going to wait half an hour in line to give them money.

Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey's account hacked

The official Twitter account of Jack Dorsey, the co-founder of the social media platform, was hacked on Friday.

One of the first tweets sent from his "compromised" account was the N-word. Another, sent minutes later, praised Hitler.

More than a dozen racist or otherwise offensive original tweets were sent within 20 minutes from the account.

Molotov cocktail toss in Florida is latest attack against DHS facility: report

A suspect was arrested Friday after allegedly tossing a lit Molotov cocktail into the lobby of a U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services office in Florida, according to a report. It was the latest in a string of attacks against Homeland Security facilities.

Authorities said the unidentified woman walked into the office in Oakland Park -- about 33 miles north of Miami -- and hurled a bottle of gasoline with a lit fuse. But the fuse detached from the bottle before it could ignite, according to a report of the incident sent to administration officials and viewed by The Associated Press. No major injuries were reported.

Citizenship and Immigration Services — a Homeland Security agency — processes legal immigration cases and is run by Acting Director Ken Cuccinelli, who reacted to the incident on Twitter late Friday night. Cuccinelli — a supporter of President Trump’s hardline stance on immigration — has been tasked with carrying out recent policy changes, including the so-called “public charge” rule that could deny green cards to many legal immigrants who use Medicaid, food stamps, housing vouchers or other forms of public assistance, according to the Associated Press.

10 teens shot at high school football game in Alabama

Two individuals were detained after at least 10 people were shot following a high school football game in Alabama, according to Mobile Police Chief Lawrence Battiste.

The wounded ranged in age from 15 to 18. They were rushed to area hospitals. No one died

Battiste didn't confirm to reporters the shooting stemmed from an altercation, but he did admonish young people for "bringing their beefs that they have with each other in their neighborhoods" into public settings and "putting people in harm's way."

The incident "may have been a directed threat at one or two individuals and other people just happened to fall prey to their carelessness," Battiste added.

One person had a seizure and another suffered an injured hand, but it's unclear if those individuals were among the 10 who got shot.

Rendlesham Forest UFO sighting 'new evidence' claim

New evidence has been gathered to back up claims a UFO landed near a US airbase in Suffolk, a former deputy commander has claimed.

Col Charles Halt told the BBC he saw unidentified objects at Rendlesham Forest in December 1980.

He says he now has statements from radar operators at RAF Bentwaters and nearby Wattisham airfield that an unknown object was tracked at the time.

Col Halt claimed it was seen by himself and base security staff.

The 75-year-old, who was deputy commander at the Bentwaters base and now lives in the US state of Virginia, said some former service people had not wanted to speak until they retired but had now provided written statements to him.

The Ministry of Defence told the BBC it no longer deals with reports of UFOs.

Film Titled “Why Don’t We Murder More White People” Airs at San Francisco Museum

A bizarre and nakedly hateful film has aired at a public San Francisco museum over the past month.

“Why Don’t We Murder More White People” by Jonathan Garcia was screened by the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts from July 23rd to August 25th.

The eleven-minute film, which has been removed from YouTube by its creator, contained profiles of several individuals speaking about their dislike for White Americans and their perceived grievances against them.

A description of the film described it as “an examination of whiteness, its unassailable immortality, and how it permeates our daily lives.” The project’s description seems to ask why violence against white people isn’t being ‘normalized.’

As we continue to watch the death of black and brown people become normalized in parallel with the rise of white supremacy, this project asks-why isn’t the inverse true?

Some who were featured in Garcia’s film spoke openly of their support for violence against White Americans who either oppose their political preferences or are simply neutral.

“I think if you’re not supporting people of color and to end white supremacy, and you’re neutral, or you are that person that’s perpetrating it, then you shouldn’t—I think you deserve harm.”

And, sometimes I feel like non-violence is not the best route.

The film’s creator designed the “experimental short” as part of a fellowship program with Yerba Buena. The publicly-funded San Francisco museum still identifies him as a “Community Engagement & Inclusion Associate.”

Milwaukee Franciscan leader paid off Mississippi men in friar's sex abuse

The IHOP in Southhaven, Mississippi, was an unlikely place to settle a sex abuse claim against a Catholic priest. But in January, the leader of the Franciscan community in suburban Milwaukee slid into a booth across from a 35-year-old victim and offered to pay $15,000 in exchange for silence about years of alleged abuse by another friar.

Father James G. Gannon, provincial minister for the Franciscan friars based in Franklin, arrived at the crowded pancake house with copies of a legal settlement for La Jarvis D. Love, who had arrived with his wife and three young children.

As La Jarvis skimmed the four-page agreement, his thoughts flickered back more than two decades to the physical and sexual abuse he says he suffered at the hands of an Appleton native who taught at a Catholic grade school in Greenwood, Mississippi. He told Gannon he wasn't sure $15,000 was enough.

"He said if I wanted more, I would have to get a lawyer and have my lawyer call his lawyer," La Jarvis told the Associated Press. "Well, we don't have lawyers. We felt like we had to take what we could."

OxyContin maker Purdue Pharma reportedly offering opioid settlement up to $12B

From JSOnline:

OxyContin maker Purdue Pharma is reportedly offering a sweeping settlement worth $10 billion to $12 billion to resolve claims that it bears responsibility for the nation's opioid crisis.

The company made the confidential offer in talks involving more than 2,000 lawsuits, including cases brought by state and local governments, NBC News reported Tuesday.

The deal would settle allegations that Purdue engaged in deceptive marketing about deadly and addictive opioids to enrich itself.

It would reportedly involve Purdue Pharma and the family behind the company, the Sacklers, as well as a planned Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing that would wipe out the family's stake in and control of the company.

Is Wisconsin in for a 'polar coaster' this winter? Here's what the experts say

From JSOnline:

As a pleasant summer draws slowly to a close, the 2020 Farmers' Almanac released a prediction Monday that would send a chill through even the most hearty Wisconsinite's bones.

The periodical's secret formula called for a "polar coaster," its website promising "another winter ride, full of thrills and chills."

That means above-normal winter precipitation over the Midwest and temperatures plunging across the northern Plains into the Great Lakes region. For those of us who remember last winter's volatility, it certainly seems foreboding.

But what sort of stock can be put into the Almanac's prediction? How much should we fear this impending polar coaster?

Wisconsin's weather experts say not so much.

"The weather part of (the Farmers' Almanac) is a joke," said Jonathan Martin, professor of atmospheric and oceanic sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. "It's good for their marketing, but there's no science behind it."

Dear Madame Zoltar

Hello, my children.  How are you?  I'm doing OK.  I'm so glad it rained all day Monday.  My tomatoes needed it.   SeƱor Zanza watered them for me in my absence.  He's so good that way.  What a wonderful man.  I'm not sure that I deserve him.  His influence on Junior has been marked.  I'm so grateful.

I'm not so grateful for our so-called "leaders" in the city calling for a new tax to cover their shortfall.  These corrupt people just pee away our money like mad, and then wring their hands when they don't have more.  What is the matter with them?  Why can't they understand that all the money they have wasted on studies and settlements with anyone who sues the city hurts us?  How can we ever hope to progress with such waste?  What is the matter with them?  Why is it so difficult for them to stay true to their constituents?  Why do they become spendthrifts once elected?  Why do they think it's OK to throw away our money?  Why do people think it's fine to insult one another with calls to "shut up" and likewise?  It just makes my blood boil. We are so top heavy with administrators and others that it's really a crime.  We need to get rid of the City Administrator and all the assistants that Mr. Mayor Mason has at his beck and call.  They act as if they have been given a mandate to screw us.  That's so upsetting.  And why do they keep going outside the city to hire new people and to do studies for us?  What is the matter with them?  I guess corruption and politics go hand in hand.  You can't have one without the other.  Why is that?  Why is it that the politicians can never think of less and less, only more and more?  Why is it so difficult to represent us instead of "leading" us?

I shouldn't get so upset over these issues, but I love Racine and hate to see so much waste and ruin.  Nobody deserves that, nobody.  I get upset whenever I see humans treating other humans that way.  They lie and cheat and steal and then act as if they have no choice.  Piggies!

I suppose it comes down from the top, from the president on down.  We have a nut job for president right now.  Four years of madness.  Just what the country needs.  A cantankerous bum in the highest office.  I believe that he wants to start a war to deflect others from studying him too closely.  What a waste.

A friend recently asked me why so  many people packing drugs speed and misbehave on the interstate.  Are they stupid?  In short, yes.  Those are the ones that get caught.  We never hear about the successful ones.  Never underestimate human stupidity.

Wouldn't it be nice to have decent people in positions of authority?  What a dream. Wouldn't it be nice to have crooks in jail as opposed to public office?

I guess things won't change in this lifetime.  We the people have to endure this shame.  Oh my!

The Founding Fathers seem to have been inspired.  There's been nothing but crooks since then.

Why, why, why?  There are no apparent answers, just questions.

Sorry to complain so much.  I just get fed up sometimes.  Give me time.  I'll settle back down.  Back into the groove of daily life, where we are too overwhelmed with living to spend much time thinking about the corruption that surrounds us.  Back into the silent majority.  Back into the drudgery of daily life.  So it goes.

Don't let my spew ruin your day.  Remember to treat each other with respect.  remember to be human to one another.  It's all that we have.

What a 30-day break from smoking marijuana does to your brain

A new study offers “convincing evidence” of how temporarily quitting smoking marijuana affects young people’s brains.

Here’s something pot-using teens should remember: Swearing off marijuana for a month may improve memory.

A recent study from Massachusetts General Hospital offers “convincing evidence” that adolescents and young adults who abstain from marijuana for 30 days are better at acquiring and storing new information compared to their counterparts who persist in the pot puffing.

The memory improvements — specifically the capacity to absorb new information and access it at a later date — could be seen as early as a week into abstinence, researchers said in the findings, published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Clinical Psychiatry.
