A Couple of Birds For Drew

I was in Florida last week for my annual Disney Marathon trip. Thursday was a cool, windy day in and I went to Emerson Point Preserve near Palmetto. Lots of birds out that day and thought I would post a couple of pics for Drew and the other bird fans here. First, a pelican of some type (is there more than one type of pelican? Surely there must be).


Next, I know what this is. It is a roseate spoonbill. I love these guys, great color.

    And what makes Ducks so expensive?

    I like duck and thought maybe I'll get one when I was gorcery shopping. $17.00 for one bird....gezzzz. Needless to say I passed on the duck.

    The birds turn pink from the shrimp they eat. Birds in the zoo are fed carrots to prevent them from reverting to all white. A little known, useless fact.

    SER I don't know if you ever went there or not but Russ's Tap on DeKoven (I think) used to have the best duck dinners on Saturday night. Toad would have to help me out with the street.

    The top pic is an American White Pelican. Tender Heart and I have seen them at Horicon Marsh. They also can be seen around the Appleton/Green Bay area during the summer months. The Brown Pelican is the other North American pelican species you are referring to. They can be found in the southern coastal regions.

    Like the Flamingo, Roseate Spoonbills do get their pink color due to their diet. So, kk is right on the subject.

    Ah legal... Pelicans and spoonbills can fly. Besides, Hale-Bopp took the pictures. Sorry.

    Mary, I use to hang out there. I worked just down the street, we would go there every lunch hour and after work. If they were too busy during lunch hours I would help tend bar with them!

    Russ also had a good Red Cabbage along with the duck!
