'Threat to democracy': Democrats prepare Monday to begin impeachment of Trump over DC riots

From JSOnline:

WASHINGTON – House Democrats plan to introduce an article of impeachment as early as Monday alleging the president should be removed from office days after a violent pro-Trump mob stormed the U.S. Capitol in a deadly riot.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi gave the green light to beginning the impeachment process following a "hours-long conversation ... unlike any other'' with her caucus.

“It is the hope of Members that the President will immediately resign. But if he does not, I have instructed the Rules Committee to be prepared to move forward with ... a motion for impeachment," she said in a statement issued by her office Friday evening.

House leaders are still discussing how best to proceed against Trump, who would be the first president ever to be impeached twice. In December 2019, the House impeached him on charges based on his efforts to pressure Ukraine to help him win re-election against then-candidate Joe Biden.

Boo-freaking-hoo

From Vox Popoli:

If you're getting deplatformed from Facebook or Twitter or YouTube at this point, don't expect anyone to give even a fragment of a damn about your totally unexpected sob story that never ever happened to anyone before.

FACEBOOK has removed the #WalkAway Campaign and has BANNED ME and EVERY MEMBER of my team!!! Over half a million people in #WalkAway with hundreds of thousands of testimonial videos and stories is GONE. Facebook has banned everything related to #WalkAway.

It doesn't matter how many times you warn people. As long as it happens to someone else, it's no big deal. As soon as it happens to them, they're screaming for help from the very politicians who haven't done one single damn thing to rein in the converged tech companies in a decade. This appeal for help is so tone-deaf, it's downright hilarious.

 I’m asking for help PLEASE from @tedcruz, @SenTedCruz, @MarshaBlackburn, @MarshaSays, @SenTomCotton, @TomCottonAR, @HawleyMO, @SenHawleyPress, @seanhannity, TuckerCarlson, @PeteHegseth, @JudgeJeanine, @newsmax, @OANN, @ChanelRion, @JackPosobiec, @realDonaldTrump, @DonaldJTrumpJr, @RealJamesWoods

Yeah, I'm sure President Trump will get right on it. He doesn't have anything better to do, after all. The answer is the same as it was five years ago. Build your own platforms. Support your own platforms. Stop supporting the enemy. And if you've got 500k people with you, then what are you doing asking anyone else for help?

Speaking of platforms, UATV will be improving its interface in the next two weeks or so. This is mostly an overdue back-end performance upgrade with some cosmetic improvements on the front end, so no new features yet, but I think viewers are really going to like it.

UPDATE: Speaking of deplatforming, Gen. Flynn, Sidney Powell, and CodeMonkeyZ were all just kicked off Twitter.

UPDATE: President Donald Trump was just kicked off Twitter. RED1 confirmed.

An 'angry' Pence navigates the fallout of his rupture with Trump over election, Capitol riots

From JSOnline:

WASHINGTON – Before leaving office, President Barack Obama awarded the nation’s highest civilian honor – the Presidential Medal of Freedom – to his vice president.

In President Donald Trump’s final days, he has presented similar honors to California Rep. Devin Nunes, one of his most vocal supporters during impeachment, and to three professional golfers.

To his vice president, Trump bestowed the label of coward.

The staunchly loyal Mike Pence was excoriated by Trump on Wednesday for his refusal to illegally intervene to prevent Congress from certifying the results for the presidential election that Trump lost.

“Mike Pence didn’t have the courage to do what should have been done to protect our Country and our Constitution,” Trump tweeted in a post that Twitter removed Wednesday evening.

Trump has also barred Pence’s chief of staff, Marc Short, from the White House.

“He’s blaming me for advice to VP,” Short told RealClearPolitics.

'Never seen Pence as angry'

Pence has not spoken publicly about the rift.

But Sen. Jim Inhofe told the Tulsa World on Wednesday that he’s “never seen Pence as angry as he was today.

The Oklahoma Republican told USA TODAY he talked to Pence about Trump's rebuke. Pence, he said, was “very upset” with Trump.

Trump’s public denunciation of his vice president is unprecedented in the history of the modern vice presidency, according to scholars. And it comes after more than four years of Pence showing extreme deference to Trump, leading critics to deride him as an obsequious enabler of a volatile president.

Wisconsin COVID-19 vaccination ramps up, to expand to more groups this month

Susan Johnston, a UW Health pharmacy technician, prepares a shot of COVID-19 vaccine.

More than 110,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccine had been given in Wisconsin as of Thursday, with daily immunizations increasing and the effort expected to expand from health care workers and nursing home residents to other priority groups by the end of the month, state officials said.

But to match President-elect Joe Biden’s pledge to vaccinate 1 million people a day nationally, and to achieve herd immunity in Wisconsin by fall, the state will need to receive up to two to three times the 70,000 doses a week it’s now getting from the federal government, officials said.

“Our system is working, and we are in the process of continuing to increase entry points for people to get vaccine in our state,” said Julie Willems Van Dijk, deputy director of the state Department of Health Services. But, she said, “we don’t have enough supply to open the gates much wider.”

I'm 69 years old and have chronic kidney disease.  Some people have already received the second dose of the vaccine.  I have no idea when or where I'll be vaccinated.  This is horseshit.

EXPLAINER: Transfer of power under 25th Amendment

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump’s role in inciting violence at the Capitol and his long refusal to acknowledge his election defeat is prompting some lawmakers to urge his removal from office through the 25th Amendment.

The amendment allows for the vice president and a majority of the Cabinet to declare a president unfit for office. The vice president then becomes acting president. The section of the amendment specifically addressing this procedure has never been invoked.

Pence affirms Biden as winner, formalizing electoral count after day of riots at Capitol; Trump acknowledges loss

USA TODAY

Vice President Mike Pence confirmed early Thursday that Joe Biden defeated President Donald Trump, officially ending the 2020 presidential race that Trump has refused to concede and after a violent day at the U.S. Capitol.

Pence officially declared Biden the winner at 3:41 a.m. EST. Not long after, Trump released a statement through a White House social media account, acknowledging Biden's win, a first. "Even though I totally disagree with the outcome of the election, and the facts bear me out, nevertheless there will be an orderly transition on January 20th,” Trump's statement said.

The conclusion capped unprecedented hours of chaos and rare violence in the halls of Congress after a mob stormed the Capitol to disrupt what is normally a largely symbolic proceeding to formalize the presidential results.

'Double standard': Black lawmakers and activists decry police response to attack on US Capitol

From JSOnline:

WASHINGTON – Civil rights leaders blasted law enforcement agencies for their slow response to rioters at the U.S. Capitol Wednesday, noting the massive show of police force in place for Black Lives Matter demonstrations last year over police killings of unarmed Black men and women.

"When Black folks are protesting and progressives are protesting peacefully they were tear-gassed, they were arrested, they were shot with rubber bullets. They were shot with real bullets," said Derrick Johnson, president of the national NAACP. "We watched it take place all summer long when people were peacefully demonstrating."

Rep. Marcia Fudge, a Democrat from Ohio and former chairwoman of the Congressional Black Caucus, questioned law enforcement officials' security efforts.

"The Capitol police were unprepared, ineffective and some were complicit. All of them should be held to account," said Fudge, who was still in lockdown by the evening and who has been tapped by President-elect Joe Biden to lead the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Georgia's Senate runoffs: Warnock makes history with runoff win, Ossoff ahead

From JSOnline:
Joey Garrison
USA TODAY

Democrat Jon Ossoff declared victory over Georgia Republican Sen. David Perdue in a Wednesday morning speech to supporters in Atlanta, calling for unity to defeat the COVID-19 pandemic. No major news outlet has projected a win for the Democrat yet.

“It is with humility that I thank the people of Georgia for electing me to serve you in the United States Senate", Ossoff said.

Media outlets projected a win for Georgia’s other Senate runoff race for Democrat Raphael Warnock last night, meaning that if Ossoff's win becomes official, Democrats will begin President-elect Biden’s administration with control of both the House and Senate.

Ossoff currently leads Perdue by about 16,000 votes.

Perdue has not conceded the race. In a statement released last night, the campaign said they believed Perdue would still be victorious in the end.

Multiple air traffic controllers in New York heard a chilling threat Monday in audio obtained exclusively by CBS News: "We are flying a plane into the Capitol on Wednesday. Soleimani will be avenged."

The threat refers to Qassem Soleimani, the Iranian general killed last year in a U.S. drone strike ordered by President Trump. It was made on the one-year anniversary of Soleimani's death, for which Iranian officials have long vowed revenge.

It's unclear who sent the threat. While the government does not believe the warning of an attack is credible, it is being investigated as a breach of aviation frequencies, CBS News has learned.

Kenosha police officer who published memoir about killing Michael Bell Jr. gets sued for defamation by Bell's father

A Kenosha police officer who shot and killed Michael Bell Jr. 16 years ago published a memoir about the incident this year, and now he's being sued for libel by Bell's father.

Michael Bell, a retired Air Force lieutenant colonel, has never accepted Kenosha's version of how his son was killed. In 2010, he won a $1.75 million settlement in a federal wrongful death suit, got Wisconsin to require outside agencies investigate in custody deaths and has never stopped calling for a new investigation into his son's death.

No Officers To Be Charged In Shooting Of Jacob Blake In Kenosha

KENOSHA, Wis. (CBS) — No police officers will be charged by the Kenosha County District Attorney’s office in the shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisconsin this summer.

Kenosha County District Attorney Michael Graveley announced the decision on Tuesday afternoon. He also said there will be no charges against Blake himself.

On Aug. 23, Kenosha police Officer Rusten Sheskey, who is white, shot Blake, 29, who is Black, seven times. Blake was left paralyzed from the waist down.

Graveley went into great detail as to why he made the decision – emphasizing that a prosecutor must build a case that can be proven beyond a reasonable doubt in court, and if prosecutors cannot do so, they cannot bring charges.

Graveley focused in particular on the issue of self-defense, noting that uniformed officers were called to the scene on a designated domestic abuse call and knew there were arrest warrants for Blake. He said the question was whether Sheskey reasonably believed shooting at Blake was necessary to prevent being stabbed by Blake or to prevent someone else from imminent danger – and if charges were brought, then the District Attorney would have to prove Sheskey did not reasonably believe such a thing.

Graveley said in Wisconsin, the burden of proof is on the state to prove an officer was not acting in self-defense, and he was not confident he could prove that case.

He added that he cannot bring charges to send a message about the misuse of force by police, to advance the cause of racial equity, or because the Blake family has suffered and needs healing – because while all are noble causes, they cannot legally be used as grounds to bring charges.

Kenosha prepares for unrest, Jacob Blake's family calls for charges as district attorney's decision expected soon

From JSOnline:

KENOSHA - Ahead of an expected charging decision in the police shooting of Jacob Blake, Kenosha officials, business owners and Wisconsin National Guard troops on Monday were preparing for unrest and activists were calling for the officer to face charges.

Blake's family and Kenosha community leaders on Monday urged police and prosecutors to fire and charge officer Rusten Sheskey in the Aug. 23 shooting that paralyzed Blake and sparked protests against police violence nationwide.

"Police officer Sheskey needs to be fired, indicted and have his day in court," Jacob Blake's uncle Justin Blake said at an evening news conference. "The Blake family one day will get justice. ... We’re a patient family."

Kenosha County District Attorney Michael Graveley has said he plans to release his decision on whether to charge Sheskey within the first two weeks of January, but he has not provided a specific date.

Former Aurora pharmacist accused of intentionally destroying vaccine released from jail; charges uncertain until vials tested by Moderna

From JSOnline:

PORT WASHINGON -- The pharmacist suspected of intentionally spoiling 500 doses of COVID-19 vaccine at a Grafton hospital because he believed they were unsafe was released from jail Monday, after a prosecutor indicated he's not positive the vaccine was actually destroyed.

Steven R. Brandenburg, 46, of Grafton, had concerns the vaccines could change people's DNA (they can't) and his estranged wife said in a divorce record that in early December, he'd brought her a water purifier and 30-day food supply because the world was "crashing down," via government cyberattacks and power grid shutdowns.

Last week, the wife said she no longer felt safe around him, and a court commissioner temporarily ordered that the couple's children not stay with Brandenburg.

Brandenburg was arrested last week and had been ordered held on a probable cause statement from Grafton police that he likely committed two felonies — first-degree recklessly endangering safety, and criminal damage to property.

Steven Brandenburg, 46, was booked Thursday on similar preliminary charges — criminal damage to property and second-degree recklessly endangering safety, both felonies — to the man Grafton Police say intentionally ruined more than 500 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.

He appeared via Zoom from the Ozaukee County Jail for an initial court appearance Monday afternoon, as did his attorney, Jason Baltz of Mequon. Baltz said later that neither he nor his client wanted to comment to news media.

But Ozaukee County District Attorney Adam Gerol told Circuit Judge Paul Malloy that the hospital had "walked back" some of the information on which police had relied, that the vials in question have not since been destroyed, but are still in the hospital's possession and might even still be viable.

'Bizarre, disorganized': Wisconsin behind most of Midwest on COVID-19 vaccinations; some health care workers say they're in the dark

From JSOnline:
Molly BeckMary SpicuzzaBob Dohr
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

MADISON - Wisconsin lags nearly all of its Midwest counterparts in getting its health care workers and first responders vaccinated against COVID-19 and has received fewer doses than other states of its size.

The state is 10th lowest out of 12 states in the Midwest in getting a first dose of the vaccine to its residents on a per capita basis, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. And Wisconsin is 10th lowest in terms of how much vaccine has been distributed, per capita.

At 1,150 doses given per 100,000 residents in Wisconsin — or about 1.2% of the population — only Michigan and Kansas ranked lower for the rate at which its population was being vaccinated.

Topping the list were North and South Dakota, which have given shots to roughly 3% of their residents.
