Use Your Head for More Then a Hat Rack - Safety First

You know about the law requiring you call for utility locating before you do any excavation. This guy decided not to call. The pictures below are a result of this guy using a post hole digger without calling for “locates” and he hit an underground cross country gas pipe. This is what a high pressure gas main is capable of.

  1. My God, look at the devastation.

Idiot! (You can say that here.) Every landscape job I worked where digging was involved, Diggers Hotline was called well in advance. Even then, sometimes things don't get marked.

I remember working with a steel spade, digging a fairly large hole for an arborvitae. The area had been marked and flagged by all the utilities. All of a sudden, my spade came up with some cable that wasn't supposed to be there. We carefully dug around it, nudged it aside, and planted the shrub next to it. I also took out phone service for a few homes once, and cable for another. And that was while being careful, in marked areas.

Only an idiot digs without calling first.

  2. Wow what a tool that guy was. I wonder how many people and pets he took out? I'm sure he bit it. I'm worried about the pipes freezing this week.
