From Racine County Eye:

"Employees at JC Penney’s Racine store at Regency Mall were told Friday that the store will be closing because the building at 5900 Durand Ave. has been sold.
"Scott Kister, a lead store assistant at JC Penney, said employees
were not given a final date for the closure, but that it would likely
close after the holiday season. There are about 70 to 80 employees
working at the store, he said.
"JC Penney Properties Inc., JC Penney’s real estate management
company, owned the building and listed the 150,000 square foot building
for $2.5 million in July. Kister was not aware of who bought the
building.
"Sears closed earlier this year, and this past April former mall Manager Curt Pruitt confirmed that Regency Mall is one of several CBL & Associates will sell in the next couple of years."

I haven't been to the mall in ages. The last time, it was just about dusk when I finished my shopping. As I left, there were a pack of teens hanging in the doorway. I felt very threatened, like I was going to be robbed or followed into the parking lot. That was it. I never went back.
ReplyDeleteI think the mall out-priced themselves, in rent charged to stores and subsequently passed on in the cost of merchandise to consumers. Unfortunately, it catered to a consumer base that Racine couldn't support. Sad to see something else fail in our town.
kk, I have to agree with your assessment of the mall. I went there several years ago to pick up a ring at the jewelers. I left about 4:00 and it was not comfortable for me. Never went back. Nope, I'm not stupid.
ReplyDeleteThe only thing I like about the mall is FYE (a music store) Otherwise I avoid it.
ReplyDeleteeveryone is going to Kenosha
ReplyDeleteturn it into an indoor go-kart track...
The mall's a mess. I watched a lot of foot traffic go by when Top Dog Hot Dog was there. Almost all I saw were juveniles. Like so many of the other past and present tenants, Top Dog said the rent is too high.
