Vos: Medical marijuana will 'take a while'

MADISON — Medical marijuana will not become legal in Wisconsin next year or anytime soon, despite broadening support, the state Assembly's top Republican — himself an advocate for legalization — said Thursday.
“It's going to take a while,” Assembly Speaker Robin Vos told The Associated Press in an interview Thursday. Finding consensus on the issue is difficult because of varied concerns from other Republicans, members of law enforcement and the medical community, Vos said.

“It's
not like it's a panacea that everybody thinks, ‘Oh, jeez this is an
easy slam dunk,’” Vos said. “It's a complicated issue that we
want to get right.”
Vos
said he believes progress is being made, noting that support has
grown among Assembly Republicans from him and one other lawmaker to
now almost half of the 63-member GOP caucus. However, Senate
Republicans remain opposed. A bill must pass the Senate and Assembly
and be signed by the governor before becoming law. Democratic Gov.
Tony Evers supports legalizing medical marijuana.
Vos
has supported medical marijuana for years and there are bipartisan
efforts to change the law this year, including for the first time a
bill co-sponsored by Republicans.
Vos
defended not being able to get a bill passed despite his support.
“There's
nobody who can say I'm not in favor of this idea,” Vos said. But
putting together the support needed to pass a bill takes time, he
said.
Democrats
have long supported legalizing medical marijuana and have used the
issue as a campaign issue against Republicans. Assembly Democratic
Minority Leader Gordon Hintz accused Vos of having token support,
saying he only speaks in favor of it because polls show a majority of
Wisconsin voters are for it.
“There
seems to be at least the recognition of members about how out of
touch they are with where the public is and where good public policy
is,” Hintz said in an interview this week.

WISCONSIN — Beginning on Jan. 1, 2020, adults who are at least 21 years old in Illinois will be allowed to buy, and consume marijuana. The new state law will allow a person to have up to 30 grams of cannabis flower, up to five grams of cannabis concentrate such as oil, and up to 500 milligrams of a cannabis-infused product such as gummies or brownies.
And while many Wisconsin residents will likely make the trek south to the Land of Lincoln to partake, lawmakers and law enforcement officers in Wisconsin say they’re going to staunchly uphold the state’s existing marijuana laws. That’s because marijuana is illegal in Wisconsin.
Authorities in Kenosha County, for example, put out a special bulletin in December ahead of Illinois marijuana legalization. Kenosha County is located on the Wisconsin-Illinois border and officials say they expect a ton of activity over the state line from people who may claim to not know better.
In their bulletin, Kenosha County Sheriff David Beth said, “The Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department recognizes that residents of Wisconsin can now travel to Illinois and consume recreational marijuana in Illinois, he said.
Beth went on to say that it will be “business as usual” for his Sheriff’s department – though the influx of a new type of traveler may mean anything but “business as usual.”
“In an effort to prevent confusion for the community traveling between the states, Sheriff David Beth reminds everyone that Wisconsin State laws and Kenosha’s local ordinances have not changed, and the Kenosha County Sheriff’s department will continue to operate as normal, enforcing these laws and ordinances.”
The City of Kenosha has a marijuana possession ordinance on the books. If a person is caught with up to one ounce of marijuana, they face a civil penalty ranging from $10 to $750 in fines, court costs and the possibility of up to 90 days of jail time. If a person is caught with more than one ounce of marijuana, they could face state charges, local ordinances say.
In Wisconsin, marijuana possession crimes escalate in a hurry. In Wisconsin, a first-time marijuana possession offense is considered a misdemeanor, punishable by up to six months behind bars and a $1,000 fine. If a person is caught a second time, they incur a felony charge with maximums of three-and-a-half years behind bars and a $10,000 fine.

California Energy Situation Bad and Getting Worse
Thanks to moonbat rule, the energy situation in California is bad and likely to get worse. Ronald Stein, Founder and Ambassador for Energy & Infrastructure of PTS Advance, sounds the alarm. Via Watts Up With That:
California has not even been able to generate enough of its own electricity in-state and imported 29% of its needs in 2018. … California households are already paying 50% more, and industrial users are paying more than double the national average for electricity.
Do the leftists running the state actually believe that carbon emissions are somehow harmful? Apparently not, or they would support zero-emission and low-emission energy sources. The state’s last nuclear plant and the last three natural gas plants in Southern California are all closing. Nuclear and natural gas are no good because they are economically efficient.
But there are no plans for industrial wind or solar projects either. This means California will have to import ever more energy — some from overseas.
California is the only state in the union that currently imports most of its crude oil energy from foreign countries. The California Energy Commission (CEC) data demonstrates that this dependency on foreign sources of oil requires expenditures of $60 million dollars EVERY DAY to oil rich foreign countries to support the 5th largest economy in the world for it’s military, aviation, cruise ships, and merchant ships, just to make up for the States’ choice to continue decreasing in-state production.
Not all of these countries are friendly to the USA or to California.

…latest moves to reduce production and require larger setbacks for existing production wells will further decrease production and require the State to increase its monthly imports resulting in expenditures approaching a whopping $90 million EVERY DAY for foreign countries to support our infrastructures.
By now everyone knows that Trump is not in cahoots with Vladimir Putin, regardless of what the Democrat Party/establishment media told us for years. Maybe someone should investigate Newsom instead:
Both [Putin and Newsom] support California being more and more dependent on imported foreign oil, and both support anti-fracking in California as a successful fracking enterprise would lessen the states’ dependency on that foreign oil.
No wonder most of the moving vans are heading out of instead of into California. As those who leave are displaced by still more needy immigrants from the less successful parts of the world, expect the politics to veer ever further to the left. The Democrat Death Spiral is not inducive to energy production.

California groom beaten to death at his wedding reception

Two brothers face murder charges for allegedly beating a groom to death after crashing his wedding reception, California police said Tuesday.
No one at the reception over the weekend knew the assailants, Chino police said in a news release, and they were asked to leave the party in a home's backyard.
A fight broke out, and police were called to the scene east of Los Angeles around 2 a.m. Sunday. Authorities found two victims with minor injuries, and witnesses told them another person involved in the altercation was missing.
In another home's backyard, they located the groom, Joe Melgoza, suffering from blunt force trauma to his head. Melgoza, 30, died from his injuries at Chino Valley Medical Center.
Police arrested Josue Castaneda Ramirez, 19, and Rony Castaneda Ramirez, 28, both of Chino, at their nearby home. They are held in West Valley Detention Center without bail.

Chino Police Sgt. Dustin Tomicic said he does not know whether lawyers represent the brothers.
One of Melgoza's cousins set up a GoFundMe page Monday to raise money for his funeral and support his 11-year-old daughter. More than $22,000 had been donated as of Tuesday night.
"He was taken from us in such a tragic and horrific way," Alice Alvarez wrote. "He leaves behind his daughter Lilly who will be in good hands with Joe's family."

2 men making a difference in Racine are celebrated by police, local restaurant

RACINE — Two men who go out of their way to make a difference in their community were celebrated by Racine police and a local restaurant on Wednesday, Dec. 18.
A Facebook post by the Racine Police Department said the two men, named Cam and Nino, work for Clarity Cutz Hair Studio. Twice a month, they volunteer to give free haircuts to students at Mitchell Middle School.
On Wednesday, the two men were recognized by Officer Collin Powell and Sgt. Walt Powell. Gus’s Gyros wanted to provide dinner for Nino and Cam. So Officer and Sgt. Powell hand-delivered gift cards for dinner to the two men.
Kudos to Cam and Nino!
Texas woman at domestic violence shelter finds son’s letter to Santa: ‘Dad was mad’

A Texas shelter for victims of domestic violence says a mother recently found a heartbreaking letter her 7-year-old son had written to Santa Claus explaining their difficult situation.
SafeHaven of Tarrant County, which provides shelter to families reeling from violent relationships, shared a photo of the letter which the mother had found in her son’s backpack.

Her son, Blake, tells Santa that he and his mom had to leave their house because “Dad was mad.”
“We had to do all the chores. Dad got everything he wanted. Mom said it was time to leave and she would take us to a safer place where we don’t have to be scared,” Blake wrote. “I’m still nervous. I don’t want to talk to the other kids.”
Blake then asks Santa if he is coming this year because he doesn’t have anything at the shelter. He asks Santa to bring him “some chapter books, a dictionary, and a compass and a (watch).”
“I also want a very very very good dad. Can you do that too?” Blake writes.
The shelter says Blake will be getting what he asked for from Santa but noted that there are many other families suffering from domestic violence as well.
“…with 117 women and children needing shelter this holiday season, we need your help to make sure they have a safe place to stay throughout December,” the shelter wrote.
