Mount Pleasant 4-year-old boy called 911 on his mom for eating his ice cream. Here's what police did next

From JSOnline:

Claire Reid
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

Police responded to a lighthearted call earlier this month after a Racine County 4-year-old called 911 on his mom for eating his ice cream.

On March 4, Officer Gardinier and Officer Ostergaard with the Village of Mount Pleasant Police Department were dispatched for a 911 hangup, the department shared in a Facebook post last week.

According to audio obtained by TMJ4, the boy told dispatchers, "My mommy is being bad."

"OK, what's going on?" the dispatcher asked.

"Come and get my mommy," the child said, as he seemed to begin to cry.

Eventually, his mother is heard on the call saying, "Oh, this little one got the phone, and he's 4."

"I ate his ice cream, so that's probably why he's calling 911," she later said.

When officers arrived at the boy's residence, he confirmed this, telling them his mom ate his ice cream and "needed to go to jail" for it, the department said. Eventually, the child told officers he no longer wanted his mother to go to jail and "just wanted some ice cream."

Officers returned the next day with two cups of ice cream and shared a photo of them giving it to the boy.

On 3/4/25, Officer Gardinier and Officer Ostergaard were dispatched for a 911 hangup. A little boy called 911 saying his mom was being bad and needed to go to jail. When Officers arrived he said his mom ate his ice cream and needed to go to jail for it. He told them he no longer wanted her to go to jail and just wanted some ice cream.
Officers responded back today to surprise him with some ice cream after he decided he didn’t want mom in trouble anymore!

"The GREAT of the people of Racine! A caring Racine man was an Easter Bunny to many children"

From RacineUncovered:

"On March 17th we had gotten word that a caring Racine man was at Kmart on 21st and Green Bay Road buying Easter baskets for children who may otherwise not get one. We were contacted by a person who was so moved by what David Ozier was doing we put them in touch with each other. David went back again the next day and purchased 3 cart fulls of baskets (with the help of 'Tom').

"Today we were able to see the smiles, laughter and joy this afternoon when David passed the baskets out to children at the Salvation Army on Washington Ave. Please enjoy these pictures from today! When we talked with David and asked him why he did this, he stated when he walked into Kmart that day he saw those baskets and knew that many children would go without and wanted to give back to the community. This shows the GREAT of the people and the positive.

"We also had the opportunity to visit with his nephew Koreem Ozier. He is a student at Case High School who is a medal and trophy winning basketball player. We spoke about the good in the community, the positive, being a great role model and giving back. On a personal note. Koreem you are a great example of our youth, I was very impressed with you and your uncle. Koreem you and your uncle show what the community CAN DO and GETS DONE! Much respect to all of you involved and a special thank you to everyone at the Salvation Army on Washington that opened their doors up today to allow this to happen!"

"Hartland dog honored for heroism"

From JSOnline:

The Siekerts — twins Bella and Grace , mom Nicole and dad Brian — pose for a photo with their Australian border collie Abby who has been honored for heroism in alerting Nicole to the warning sound from the family’s carbon monoxide detector. Credit: Michael McLoone

By Meg Jones of the Journal Sentinel

"Hartland — Nicole Siekert felt tired and so did her 5 1/2-year-old twin daughters, but she figured it was the flu or a cold.

"Her Australian border collie Abby knew differently.

"The Siekert house was cold the morning of Feb. 11 and after Brian Siekert left for work, Nicole plugged in a space heater because they had been having trouble with their furnace. When Bella and Grace got up, they weren't bouncing around like normal. She checked for fevers but they were normal.

"'They both said they were tired but they wanted to go to school,' recalled Nicole Siekert, who walked them out to the school bus at 8:30 a.m. 'I almost kept them home. I'm so glad I didn't.'

"She didn't know the furnace intake was blocked. She didn't know dangerously high levels of carbon monoxide were building up inside her home. She couldn't see or smell the gas. But one member of the household knew something was very wrong.

"Feeling lethargic and foggy, Siekert decided to lie down after her daughters left for school. Abby couldn't tell her owner the carbon monoxide detector was sounding in the basement, but the smart canine knew what to do. The 9-year-old dog continually stuck her black-going-gray muzzle underneath Nicole's chin as she closed her eyes and tried to drift off.

"Finally, Siekert got up and, thinking Abby wanted to go outside for a potty break, walked to the door. Instead, Abby padded downstairs to the basement and sat right next to the carbon monoxide detector.

"'It was a loud noise but because I was so out of it, it didn't sound loud to me,' Siekert said in an interview at her kitchen table. 'That's when I got it. I was like, "Oh, thank you, Abby. I love you."'

"She called her husband at his job at J.M. Brennan in Milwaukee. She opened windows and doors, shut off the furnace and then went outside to sit in her vehicle for warmth and call her daughters' school and doctor.

"The family was treated for carbon monoxide poisoning at Waukesha Memorial Hospital, where blood tests showed Nicole had very high levels and the girls had lower levels. Abby's veterinarian told Nicole to check the dog for pale gums, labored breathing and fatigue, but Abby showed no signs of carbon monoxide poisoning.

"The Siekerts adopted Abby when she was 8 months old from an animal rescue shelter in Illinois.

"'We rescued her, but she rescued me,' Nicole Siekert said."

"The GREAT of Racine - Police K9 units pay a special visit to a little boy"

From RacineUncovered:

Credit - Racine Uncovered
"On Wednesday morning, March 23rd, a very special young boy got a surprise visit from all the K9 units with the Racine Police Department and Mount Pleasant Police Department. Daxton loves police officers and K9’s.

"In October of 2015 the Racine Police K-9 Unit teamed up with the Mt. Pleasant PD, and Racine County Sheriffs Department for a calendar fundraiser. The Racine PD K-9 Unit was contacted by the mother of Daxton LaRue. His mother requested that one of our Handlers personally deliver Daxton’s calendar to him. On October 15th, K-9 TITAN and his Handler made a special trip over to deliver the calendar and take a photo with Daxton. Since then, TITAN paid a visit to Daxton’s classroom. On March 15th we received a message from one of Daxton’s family members that on March 10th Daxton was diagnosed with Leukemia. He recently received his first dose of chemo and was released from Children’s hospital on March 14th. His family member asked if a K-9 would stop by to put a smile on his face amid some very scary times. Well we did it…and then some.

"Today the Racine Police, and Mount Pleasant Police Department K-9 Units made a special trip over to Daxton’s house where he was presented with several gifts from the Teams and the Chief of Police. The looks on his face are priceless!! Enjoy the pictures, and share this story! The story will be on their site as well.

"Please go to a website set up for Daxton."

"Racine woman gives the coat off her own back to someone in need"

From RacineUncovered:

"We spoke to her this morning. 'It broke my heart to see this young mother walking in the cold with NO COAT while pushing a stroller with a little one walking next to it. She walked past me I asked do you need gloves? I popped my trunk an gave them 4 new pairs of gloves to double up. She asked for 2 dollars to catch the bus, I went to the time machine pulled out more than what she asked for gave it to her, an gave her my coat too. I wanted to cry just knowing she was going back out in the cold to walk without a coat. I am thankful because I knew she wouldn’t be that cold walking with those babies.'

"Stephanie asked us to please spread the word. Don’t ignore others. She said this morning 'I pray what I do will inspire others to help someone else out in need.'"

"The new Miss Nashville is from Mount Pleasant"

From The Journal Times.com:

Buy Now

"MOUNT PLEASANT — Winning pageants isn’t anything new for Mount Pleasant’s Jeanette Morelan.

"Morelan, 21, a senior at Belmont University in Tennessee, was named Miss Nashville 2016 in a pageant on Nov. 8. She also won Miss America’s Outstanding Teen award for the year 2010 at the age of 14, making her the youngest ever to win the award.

"But for Morelan, the accolades and honors are about more than just external beauty.

"'It allows the titleholder to not just be a pretty face wearing a crown, but it allows the titleholder to have a voice,' she said.

"Throughout her life, Morelan has been more than just a pretty face. When she won Outstanding Teen while a student at The Prairie School, she raised more than $200,000 for Children’s Miracle Network. At Belmont, she was the school’s student body president as a junior. Over the summer, she went to South Africa, where she was a teacher and soccer coach for impoverished children.

"'I thought in a different dimension after winning that,' Morelan said of being named Outstanding Teen at such a young age. 'It’s all about the small things people can do to make a difference.'"

"That belief is what inspired Morelan’s platform for her pageants, which she calls 'the power of one.' Essentially, she tries to get people to focus on the impact that they can make as an individual on the world around them."

"With a glittering Lake Michigan in the background and a great variety of shops and ethnic restaurants, Downtown Racine has been named to a list of top downtowns in Wisconsin.

"The writers at OnlyInYourState.com regularly compile and post lists of best things and places to find, taste, experience, see, drink, visit … anything, really, in every state in America.

"Dedicated writers who call a particular state home write articles to celebrate all the amazing things that make their state great, and, hopefully, entice others to visit as well.

"Other stories that celebrate Wisconsin include the most scenic drives, old schoolhouses, inexpensive places to live, odd facts, incredible sites in winter, great seafood restaurants, and more."

"Lost 3-Year-Old Boy Found With Family Dog Protecting Him"

ABC Breaking News | Latest News Videos

"A 3-year-old North Dakota boy who disappeared for nearly seven hours was later found under the protective cover of the family's pet dog, authorities said.

"Carson Urness disappeared from his family's 10-plus acre property in Cooperstown, North Dakota, around 7:30 p.m. Monday after being let out to play while his mom worked inside the home, the boy's father told ABC News.

"'She checked on him again at 7:30 and he was gone,' Carson's father, Brock Urness, said of his wife, Courtney, who was inside taking care of the couple's 11-month-old daughter while Carson played.

"'She looked around frantically for about 30 minutes and then called me,' Urness said. 'And I said, 'Well, where's Cooper?' and she said, 'Cooper is not here either.'

"Cooper is the family's dog - a German Shepherd, Labrador and Golden Retriever 'mutt,' as Urness calls him - that the family adopted three years ago after he was left on the side of the road near a relative's home.

"The Urnesses searched for Carson until 8:30 p.m. when they called 911. Less than 30 minutes later, the local police and fire departments had launched an aerial and ground search for Carson, aided by 200 neighbors, family and friends from Cooperstown, population about 800.

"'They had an airplane here searching for him and 60 four-wheelers and people looking on foot and didn't find anything,' Urness said.

"Just before officials planned to call off the search for the night, around 2:30 a.m., officials decided to send out one last four-wheeler for a final sweep of the property.

"'That four-wheeler found him about a mile away from our house, in the middle of one of our fields by a pasture,' Urness said. 'Carson was in tall grass but when they shone lights down to sweep it, the dog stuck its head out.'

"Carson was found safely underneath Cooper, who was laying on the boy, presumably to protect him from the 40-degree temperatures that night."

"4 New African Penguins Join Racine Zoo"

From Racine County Eye:

By Heather Asiyanbi in Community · December 17, 2015 · No comments

"The Racine Zoo‘s African penguin family has four new members, bringing the size of the group to 10.

"Bob was born in 2006 and is the largest of the four, weighing in at 10 pounds; Eon is eight years old and loves to swim and eat his fish off the floor; Stevie is the youngest at six years old, is shy with people but loves other penguins; and Norm, the old man of the group, is also the friendliest.
"African penguins are considered medium-sized and are the only species of penguin that live at the southern most tip of Africa. They can dive more than 100 feet and hold their breath for more than two minutes as a time. In the wild, penguins eat up to 14 percent of their body weight, and their favorites are anchovies, small fish, squid, and shellfish."

"Biggest Heart: Beth David"

From The Journal Times.com:

The Journal Times has released their "Best of Racine County 2015."

The winner with the "biggest heart" is Beth David:

September 27, 2015 5:00 am

"As a child, Beth David can recall being counselled by her mother, Cynthia Wanek, with advice that would shape her life. During Cynthia’s time in Cleveland from 1943-51, she became acquainted with a tailor who had spent time in a German concentration camp during World War II and still had a number from those horrible days tattooed to his arm. He would tell Cynthia, 'Sometimes you have to speak up for those who can’t,' and she passed that wisdom onto her daughter.

"'It was always a life lesson,' David said.

"As David deals with what she said is a worsening case of multiple sclerosis approaching her 46th birthday Oct. 17, David continues to devote her life to making a difference in Racine, where she moved from her native West Allis in 1979. From finding living quarters for a homeless man and his dog in the dead of winter to initiating summer lunch programs for needy children to heightening community understanding with 'Peacefest,' which held its fourth annual event Aug. 23 at Quarry Lake Park, David lives for the betterment of others.

"Her award comes occasionally, such as when she recently greeted a boy she calls 'M' at her lunch program.

"'He was bouncing off the walls,' David said, 'and I looked at him and said, "Hey, 'M,' do you need to hug it out?" He looked at me and he came over and gave me the biggest hug ever. Everybody was dumbfounded. And then he came back two more times to get a hug."
