"Jefferson Airplane’s Paul Kantner dies at 74"

"Paul Kantner, one of the giants of the San Francisco music scene, died Thursday. Mr. Kantner, a founding member of the Jefferson Airplane, was 74 and had suffered a heart attack this week.

"His death was confirmed by longtime publicist and friend, Cynthia Bowman, who said he died of multiple organ failure and septic shock.

"Mr. Kantner had a string of health problems in recent years, including a heart attack in March.

"With Jefferson Airplane, Mr. Kantner pioneered what became known as the San Francisco sound in the mid-1960s, with such hits as 'Somebody to Love' and 'White Rabbit.'

"The Airplane was renowned for thrilling vocal gymnastics by singers Marty Balin, Grace Slick and Mr. Kantner, the psychedelic blues-rock sound developed by guitarist Jorma Kaukonen and bass player Jack Casady and the LSD-spiked, ’60s-era revolutionary fervor of its lyrics.

"The band was formed in 1965 in a Union Street bar called the Drinking Gourd, when Balin met Mr. Kantner and expressed his interest in creating a 'folk-rock' band. It didn’t take long for the Airplane to attract a sizable local following, enough so that when fledgling promoter Bill Graham opened his legendary Fillmore Auditorium, the Jefferson Airplane served as the first headliner."

Another one bites the dust.

Four for Fridays!

I am so sorry I forgot to post Four for Fridays last week. We just had a lot of things going on I had to take Drew to work and then when he got off work we had to get my daughter up to Oshkosh to go and get measured for her dress for my sons wedding that is in September. Here are the questions for this week.

1) Do you have to make a grocery shopping list?

2) If you do make a shopping list do you end up buying extra things?

3) Do you have to put your appointments, peoples birthdays and events on a calendar so you do not forget?

4) If you have something that you usually do every week do you forget about it sometimes?

I hope everyone has a great weekend.

Awesome!

"Knowing calligraphy will be awesome!"

From The Lonely Libertarian :

"Sunday, January 24, 2016

"Our local schools tried doing away with teaching cursive writing for a year. That's how long it lasted before parents protested. Kids, being the long-range thinkers they are, don't see the importance of knowing how to read and write cursive, so they were all for dropping a "useless, archaic form of communication" from their already overloaded with nonsense curriculum. A local man, WWII vet, former school teacher, principal, superintendent.  gave a lecture to every class that would welcome him on how the written word has been used to create and control societies through history. When only the elite can translate historic and religious texts, they can tell the populace anything they want. When only the elite can read the original Bill of Rights and Constitution, they can tell the ignorant citizens of this once great nation whatever serves their purposes and keeps the peasants in line. We are just a few generations away from this horror. Fight for your kids' rights to learn how to read and understand important documents on their own.

It's a whole different world out there

"Most alcohol industry profits come from problem drinkers - studies"

"Alcohol industry giants like Diageo, Anheuser-Busch InBev, and MillerCoors claim they promote responsible drinking, but a new study from the UK reveals the 'dirty little secret' that most of their profits come from 'harmful' and 'hazardous' customers.

"Of the estimated £37.8 billion ($54bn) profit reaped by English alcohol sales in 2013, £23.7 billion came from what health professionals call 'harmful' and 'hazardous' drinkers who risk their health and cause lethal damage, according to the Guardian.

"'Hazardous' drinkers consume more than 14 'units' per week, equal to about seven pints, whereas 'harmful', or 'risky', drinkers consume more than 50 units per week for men, or 35 for women.

"This can lead to liver problems, cancer, and anti-social problems like domestic abuse, drunk driving, and other forms of violence.

"Looking at data from the Health Survey for England, researchers from Southampton University were able to calculate how this translates in financial terms, concluding that £14.4 billion ($20bn) worth of sales came from 'hazardous' drinkers and £9.3 billion ($13bn) from 'harmful' drinkers.

"Official figures from England's Health & Social Care Information Centre show the fatal repercussions of consumption are 6,592 alcohol-related deaths in 2013, a ten percent increase in just ten years.

"This echoes a new report from Australia this week which was also shows the alcohol industry’s heavy reliance on risky drinkers.

"Australia’s main consumers of alcohol represent just 20 percent of the population, but account for over 74 percent of all the alcohol consumed each year.

"The findings demonstrate that if this 20 percent reduced their consumption to within the guidelines, the total alcohol consumed in Australia would decrease by 39 percent.

"'The alcohol industry is totally dependent on risky drinking,' Michael Thorn, CEO of the Foundation for Alcohol Research & Education, said. 'This is its dirty little secret. It’s an industry built on identifying, targeting and exploiting its best customers.'"

I don't think this is really something new.  I've heard of other such studies in the past.  I bet (get it?) that most of the gambling industry's profits come from problem gamblers or gambling addicts, too..

"Girl Scouts To Start Taking Orders Friday"

From Racine County Eye:

By Denise Lockwood in Community · January 21, 2016 · No comments

"Girl Scout cookie fiends take note: the Girl Scouts of Wisconsin Southeast start taking orders Friday.

"The thin mints, peanut butter patties, caramel deLites and four other varieties can be ordered for $4 a box and Trios, a gluten-free cookie, can be purchased for $5 a box.

"And to streamline your hook-up, there’s a mobile app that allows the Girl Scout of your choice to take your order on their mobile phone. You can also choose to have them delivered personally or have it shipped to the customer’s door or business. But you’ll still need to buy your cookies through a Girl Scout.

"But if you don’t know one, the girls will be selling them at grocery stores and businesses from Feb. 26 through March 27. The locations can be found by entering a zip code at GirlScoutCookies.org or in the Cookie Finder mobile app for iOS and Android.

"The profits help fund programs locally."

"Local thrift store selling goods for $1.29 per pound"

From The Journal Times.com:

"RACINE — Bethesda Thrift Shop has announced a new sales format for all goods, except used furniture: $1.29 per pound.

"Bethesda is a national Christian organization, providing homes and other services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The organization helps people live the lives they want through more than 300 programs in 14 states. Its thrift shop at Elmwood Plaza, 3701 Durand Ave., helps support that mission.

"Bethesda said it expects its new sales concept to “make a big impact in the community.”

"'This will allow people to get even more product for their money and allow them to choose from an even larger selection of merchandise,' stated Paul Gieschen, corporate director of retail operations for Bethesda.

"The items for sale at the Racine shop are overflow items that have rotated out of one of Bethesda’s other stores. For more information visit bethesdalutherancommunities.org/racine-wisconsin online or call 262-456-0626."

The Big Chill!

Yesterday I went downtown to see The Big Chill and get some pictures to share with everyone. I decided to brave the cold windy weather out there to get some good pictures. When I went to park by the Subway downtown there was five police SUV's park down there with the vehicles turned on and no one in any of them. There was four by Subway and one on the side street. So I was taking the pictures and I had to walk in between two of them to get a picture I was just hoping that they would not come out and ask why I was in between them. They never came out to ask me what I was doing. So I finished taking my pictures and left.

I hope everyone enjoys the pictures-

Dear Madame Zoltar

Hello, my dear Mom and Popsicles!  How are you?  We're on a slow heat wave, going from 20° F today to into the 30's by the weekend.  There's not supposed to be much snow, either.  Now watch, the exact opposite will happen with the weather, and the meteorologist will have some glib words to share.  In any other profession, if you were wrong 50% of the time, you'd be fired.  So the talking heads on television can churn out garbage and seem to be invulnerable to reproach.

I don't think anyone cares if the weather broadcast is right or wrong.  What matters today is delivery, the style used to broadcast the prediction.  Accuracy, if any, is a by-product and not the gist of "The Weather" on TV.  It reminds me of something I heard on TV:  "You're talking about justice and we're talking about the law, which are two different things."

Please let me know when you are attending Watercolor Wisconsin and I might come along, too.  A little culture might do me some good.  There's RUSD's art instructors' show in the Racine Arts Gallery going on, too.

Unfortunately, no one from our household attended the Big Chill event in downtown this past weekend.  What I've read and seen, though, says it was a great success.  Good for them.

The big chill is gone from our house since Señor Zanza insulated every nook and cranny, and somehow is coaxing another year out of our ancient furnace.  Thank you so much, Señor.  If I had to rely only upon Junior, we'd be in sad shape indeed. I hope that Junior learns by example as he sees what Señor Zanza does.  Even if Junior doesn't pick up any real world skills, at least he might learn how to be a gentleman.  God knows there's few enough of those.

God also knows I'm tired and want to go to bed.  Thank you all for reading my blog today.  I love visitors.

What the hell is the matter with you?  Ask  madamezoltar@jtirregulars.com

Try to stay warm in the brutally cold weather.  Exposed skin gets frostbit easily.  Bundle up until you can't move and then just stay home, anyway.  Don't start a bonfire in your living room.  Do it in the kitchen. instead.

"Wisdom from Abraham Lincoln"

From Racine County Corruption:

"Nearly all men can stand adversity,
but if you want to test a man's character,
give him power".

"Discourage litigation. Persuade your neighbors to compromise whenever you can. Point out to them how the nominal winner is often a real loser -- in fees, expenses, and waste of time. As a peacemaker the lawyer has a superior opportunity of being a good man. There will still be business enough".

The above words of wisdom are for the few in Racine who can appreciate the few who still care.

"Unified art teachers' work on exhibit at Racine Arts Council gallery"

From The Journal Times.com:

"The art bug bit Samantha Stoewe early.

"She attended Fine Arts Elementary School, which nurtured her budding love of everything artistic. In high school, she joined the band and drifted away from sketching and drawing.

"But the bug was persistent. The band room was right next to the art room, and every day she walked past those rooms, art called out to her.

"'I talked to a few friends in art and, sure enough, I quit band so I could take art classes,' said Stoewe, now an art instructor at Park High School. 'By my senior year, I was in AP art and I loved it. My senior year an artwork that was submitted to Wingspread got purchased by their president at the time. That was definitely a defining moment in my young art career.'

"To help nourish and nurture the next generation of artists at Racine Unified School District, Stoewe is one of nine district art instructors exhibiting their work at the Racine Arts Council’s ArtSpace Gallery, 316 Sixth St., for the next four weeks.

"The show, called 'Unified,' runs until Feb. 21. The exhibit showcases the talents of art educators from Racine elementary, middle and high schools.

"The show also fits perfectly with the mission of the Racine Arts Council, founded in 1967. The council was started to encourage, support and advocate on behalf of emerging and established artists, artistic groups in our community, and young people interested in the arts.

"It is the second time the gallery has exhibited work from Unified art instructors."

"Day off used to strengthen community ties"

Park High School basketball player Jena George
helps Home Harbor of Racine resident Margaret Lebon make Valentine’s Day decorations on Monday at Home Harbor. George and her Park teammates visited with residents on a day off school for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day to give back to the community.
"RACINE — The basketball season hasn’t been the best for Kadeesha Duncan and the rest of the Park High School girls team.

"The Panthers have struggled to a 1-12 record so far this season and usually scuffle to score more than 30 points in a game.

"But instead of working on their game Monday — a day off of school and practice — Duncan, her teammates and coach Carey Palacios worked on their community involvement.

"For the second straight year, Palacios brought his team to Home Harbor of Racine, an assisted living facility at 1600 Ohio St., on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day to socialize with residents and remind his players that they need to try and be good off the court as well as on the court.

"'In the spirit of Dr. King, we try to give back to community as much as it gives to us,' said Palacios, in his third season as Panthers coach. 'The wins off the court sometimes mean more than the wins on the court.'

"The team also helps out at Home Harbor during Thanksgiving and rings bells for the Salvation Army during Christmas, Palacios said. 'Character is a big thing for any team,' he said. 'Doing these kind of things are a no-brainer for us.'

"Home Harbor residents live in efficiency, one- and two-bedroom apartments with full kitchens and private entries. The facility also has patios and several common areas."

"Letter to the Editor: Isaacson Running for Mount Pleasant Village Board"

From Racine County Eye:

By Heather Asiyanbi in Elections, Government · January 18, 2016 · No comments

"My name is Terri Isaacson and I am running for Mt. Pleasant Village Trustee for seat #2 in the spring election. As a working mom, specializing in customer service, I understand the value of treating people with patience and respect. This experience makes me a qualified candidate for trustee. If elected, I will bring needed diligence and consideration to Village Hall.

"I was born and raised in Racine and I moved to Mt Pleasant thirty years ago. I have been married to my husband, Paul for thirty three years and we have a daughter, Erica.

"I have worked for Putzmeister America for nearly two decades and I currently work in the Customer Service Group.

"Running a growing village like Mt. Pleasant is a big job, but it also requires common sense. My thinking is 'if it’s not broken don’t fix it.' Village Trustees are spending taxpayer money – your money. We have a duty to be responsible, to ask questions and make sure that we are protecting your investment in our community.

"As a resident of Hwy V, my family and I have lived this situation. Dozens of families on Hwy V are being assessed for sewer and water no one asked for – services for development in Caledonia that was never part of the original contract. Worse, we discovered the contract had been changed. Those changes will cost families tens of thousands of dollars each.

"All this was voted through by my opponent, Rick McCluskey and other trustees without clear and responsible communication to residents. We were informed of a vote just 48 hours before it happened. In spite of our objections and questions to the board, no one listened or responded.

"That’s no way to treat residents and taxpayers and I will work to make sure no resident in Mt. Pleasant ever experiences such indifference and arrogance by their elected officials. Trustees should be able and willing to explain every vote they take. If elected, I will explain every vote I take, and I will listen to the thoughts and concerns of residents FIRST. That’s just common sense customer service.

"Mt. Pleasant is a fantastic place to live and work, our way of living deserves officials who really care about people and see them as partners, not as a nuisance during public comments at Village Board meetings. As Village Trustee, I will work for you, every day.

"Thank you for your consideration. The primary election date is Tuesday, February 16th. I would be honored to have your vote".

"Bobblehead museum moves closer to reality in Milwaukee"

From The Journal Times.com:

21 hours ago  •     (0) Comments

A collection of dolls chosen for inclusion in an exhibit of the National Bobblehead Museum reflect the exhibit's broad array of designs at RedLine Milwaukee in Milwaukee on Jan. 6. Bobbleheads have been collected over the years by Phil Sklar and Brad Novak of Milwaukee. Their collection includes pieces that have been part of giveaways at sporting events, purchases from collectors and donations from sports teams and private collectors.

"MILWAUKEE — Pete Rose may never be enshrined in Cooperstown, N.Y., but Major League Baseball’s all-time hits leader has a terrific shot at having a hall of fame induction ceremony in Milwaukee.

"Instead of joining the likes of Babe Ruth, Willie Mays, Robin Yount and Paul Molitor in the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, Charlie Hustle may one day share wall space with Fred Flintstone, Mahatma Gandhi, Bart Starr, Jesus Christ and Homer Simpson.

"The National Bobblehead Hall of Fame & Museum is closer to reality thanks to a couple of longtime friends who saw their collection of bobbleheads get slightly out of hand.

"Instead of getting rid of most of their nodding and shaking statuettes, Phil Sklar and Brad Novak quit their day jobs and doubled down to create what is believed to be the world’s largest collection of bobbleheads for public display.

"As of two weeks ago, the pair had amassed more than 5,000 bobbleheads and were busy preparing for the opening of an exhibit to showcase part of the eclectic collection of figurines from the world of sports, pop culture, entertainment, history and politics.

"'It’s not something we did overnight. We’ve thought about this for a long time,' Novak, 31, told the Wisconsin State Journal. 'It’s our passion.'

"The 3,000-square-foot exhibit, 'Bobbleheads: Real & Fantastical Heroism,' will open Jan. 22, at Redline Milwaukee, a nonprofit urban arts center and incubator for emerging artists located at 1422 N. Fourth St., just a few blocks from the BMO Harris Bradley Center."

"Letter to the Editor: Jon Hansen for Mount Pleasant Village Board"

From Racine County Eye:

By Heather Asiyanbi in Elections, Government · January 14, 2016 · No comments

"My name is Jon Hansen and I am running for Mt. Pleasant Trustee in seat #6. I am seeking office because I care about our community and I want to see it thrive. Mt. Pleasant needs responsive leadership, revitalization efforts and spending priorities. I know that we can build a better future for everyone if we put politics aside and come together in addressing the challenges of our village. You will have the first opportunity to vote for me at the primary election on Tuesday, February 16th.
  • I am a lifelong resident of Racine County and have lived in Mt. Pleasant for 12 years.
  • I have been married to my wife Julie for 17 years and we have a beautiful daughter in grade school.
  • I have dedicated nearly 25 years to serving our community working in law enforcement and public safety with extensive experience in community relations and community issues.
"My vision for Mt. Pleasant is a vibrant, growth-oriented community in which to live, develop and conduct business. I am committed to listening, partnering, empowering and recognizing Mt. Pleasant’s residents and businesses. Our homes and our community are our dearest assets. Your concerns will be mine.

"My opponent, Anna Marie Clausen, has proven to be out of touch with the concerns of residents. Recently, Ms. Clausen publicly stated that Mt. Pleasant residents are not nice enough when voicing their concerns to the board, preferring the demeanor of residents in Caledonia!

"She voted last April to approve six months of severance pay for all village department heads fired (with the exception of just cause) which none of our neighbor municipalities offer. When questioned about it, she misstated her vote, revealing that she did not understand her vote at the time or is attempting to obfuscate the facts now.

"Mt. Pleasant residents deserve better! If elected, I would immediately start addressing and echoing your concerns and the issues that are facing our village.
  • Village transparency and communications must be addressed – Open, honest government.
  • Re-establish the technology committee to inform residents of events, meeting notices, finance reports, live stream committee and board meetings to establish accountability in all areas.
  • Fiscal responsibility with spending priorities.
  • Public safety must be addressed. Reduce response times for Police, Fire and Rescue to residents.
  • Community development and planning – Diligent in attracting new and quality development for a sustainable community.
  • Develop a long term capital improvement and infrastructure plan.
  • Advocate for capital improvement and infrastructure funding by utilizing grant funding from the state and federal government to reduce property tax burdens.
  • Eliminate the six-month severance golden parachute package for village staff.
  • Clearly define administrative powers within the village to insure oversight of decisions that impact residents.
"I am committed to making your voice heard in the Village of Mount Pleasant. I want to play an active role in creating a vibrant, strong community and a safer, better place to raise our families, conduct business and create a sustainable and prosperous community.

"If you share my vision, I urge you to vote for me and help make it happen! Together, we can make a meaningful difference – for our families and our community.

"Thank you for your time and consideration.

"Letter to the Editor: Otwaska Running for Mount Pleasant Trustee"

From Racine County Eye:

By Heather Asiyanbi in Elections, Government · January 12, 2016 · No comments

"My name is Ken Otwaska and I am running for Mt. Pleasant Village Board of Trustees for seat #2 in the spring election. I would like to tell you a bit about myself and why I have decided to run for office.
  • I am a lifetime resident of Mount Pleasant.
  • I have been married to my wife, Carol, for 50 years.
  • We have two sons and are grandparents of two.
  • I have been a Mt. Pleasant home owner for 50+ years and reside in the Lake Park neighborhood.
"I retired from from Case IH after 30 years of service – from 1962 to 1992. I was a charter member of the Mt. Pleasant Fire Department from June 1964 to 1988 and EMT from 1976 to 1988. I volunteered for Mount Pleasant recreation for 15 years and currently volunteer as a MS walker.

"My decision to run for trustee was in the beginning mostly about village trustee apathy and poor planning of fire/rescue services in many areas of Mt. Pleasant.

"For more than 2 years, I spoke regularly at Village Board of Trustee meetings during public comments and tried to have my concerns addressed. With only 3 minutes to speak and no interaction allowed between the public and trustees, my concerns did nothing to create change. The village closed the Lake Park fire station and emergency response times have risen dramatically.

"My opponent, Rick McCluskey, ran for village trustee in 2014. He claimed to be “flabbergasted” by emergency response times and promised to order a study of fire department coverage in Mt. Pleasant to see how the deficiencies could be addressed.

"Two years later, Rick McCluskey has done nothing.

"Having been a firefighter for 25 years and a charter member of the Mt. Pleasant fire department – I know a critical response time is the difference between life and death. Not just for me and my family, but for all residents of Mt. Pleasant.

"Emergency response has been the main reason I have attended board meeting after board meeting, year in and year out, but my interest has turned into something bigger.

"As a village, we have spent millions of dollars on the Pike River pathway, while residents wait longer for rescue. Mt. Pleasant has fewer fire stations while trustees give the Village Administrator a 31% raise in salary and 6 month 'golden parachute' deals to fired village department heads.

"The ability for residents and taxpayers to raise concerns to trustees has diminished over the last few years and we need to do better. These are the issues that have compelled me to run for office this spring. Mt. Pleasant residents deserve elected officials who will listen and act. The safety of our community will always be my first priority and I will never turn my back to that sacred responsibility.

"Thank you for your time and consideration.

"Letter to the Editor: Martini for Mount Pleasant Village Board"

From Racine County Eye:

By Heather Asiyanbi in Elections, Government · December 29, 2015 · No comments

"**Editor’s Note: The Letter to the Editor was submitted by Mount Pleasant Village Board candidate John Martini, M.D.

"Citizens of Mt. Pleasant,

"My name is Dr. John Martini, I am running for Mt. Pleasant Village Board of Trustees in seat #6.
I am a life-long resident of Racine County and I have lived in Mt. Pleasant for more than 13 years. I have practiced medicine in SE Wisconsin for 23 years and I currently serve as a hospitalist and Chaplin in Kenosha.
I have experienced misgivings about how business is conducted in Mt. Pleasant, but as a resident of Hwy V, I have seen first-hand how a village can turn its back on residents and hide behind rules and regulations while it breaks those rules when no one is watching.
My opponent for seat #6 represents those trustees who have put their own power before residents interests. She has voted 100% of the time with them and become a rubberstamp for measures that have decreased village services while it raises taxes.
My opponent voted to give 6 months of severance pay to department heads fired in the village. A 'golden parachute' no other municipality offers. She moved to place her own brother on a village commission with no discussion or recommendation by the members of the commission, while she moved to block the all nominations of the current village president.
My opponent moved to eliminate her own technology committee, without discussion or input. This committee was charged with making digital information more accessible to staff and residents. In a digital age, nothing could be more important.

"I seek to bring a set of listening ears and a Chaplin’s spirit to the board. The primary election on February 16th will be vitally important. It is an opportunity to remove trustees who are not listening or working for the people of Mt. Pleasant and give our community a real choice in the general election on April 5th.
All the challenging candidates for seats #2 and #6 are worthy for consideration.  I thank my fellow villagers for your thoughtful consideration.

"Events to honor Martin Luther King Jr. Day"

From The Journal Times.com:

"Racine and surrounding communities will join cities and towns across the nation in honoring Martin Luther King Jr. Day with special events Saturday through Monday, Jan. 16-18. The U.S. federal holiday is celebrated on the third Monday in January each year, to commemorate the Jan. 15 birthday of King, a leader of the modern American civil rights movement.

"Born in 1929 in Atlanta, Ga., King was a Baptist minister and social activist. From the mid-1950s until his assassination in 1968, he led a nonviolent movement to achieve legal equality for African-Americans in the United States. King also campaigned against poverty and international conflict, and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts in 1964.

"The King Holiday, according to the writings of King’s late wife, Coretta Scott King, “honors the life and contributions of America’s greatest champion of racial justice and equality, the leader who not only dreamed of a color-blind society, but who also lead a movement that achieved historic reforms to help make it a reality.” (www.thekingcenter.org)."
