"Jefferson Airplane’s Paul Kantner dies at 74"

"Paul Kantner, one of the giants of the San Francisco music scene, died Thursday. Mr. Kantner, a founding member of the Jefferson Airplane, was 74 and had suffered a heart attack this week.

"His death was confirmed by longtime publicist and friend, Cynthia Bowman, who said he died of multiple organ failure and septic shock.

"Mr. Kantner had a string of health problems in recent years, including a heart attack in March.

"With Jefferson Airplane, Mr. Kantner pioneered what became known as the San Francisco sound in the mid-1960s, with such hits as 'Somebody to Love' and 'White Rabbit.'

"The Airplane was renowned for thrilling vocal gymnastics by singers Marty Balin, Grace Slick and Mr. Kantner, the psychedelic blues-rock sound developed by guitarist Jorma Kaukonen and bass player Jack Casady and the LSD-spiked, ’60s-era revolutionary fervor of its lyrics.

"The band was formed in 1965 in a Union Street bar called the Drinking Gourd, when Balin met Mr. Kantner and expressed his interest in creating a 'folk-rock' band. It didn’t take long for the Airplane to attract a sizable local following, enough so that when fledgling promoter Bill Graham opened his legendary Fillmore Auditorium, the Jefferson Airplane served as the first headliner."

Four for Fridays!

I am so sorry I forgot to post Four for Fridays last week. We just had a lot of things going on I had to take Drew to work and then when he got off work we had to get my daughter up to Oshkosh to go and get measured for her dress for my sons wedding that is in September. Here are the questions for this week.

1) Do you have to make a grocery shopping list?

2) If you do make a shopping list do you end up buying extra things?

3) Do you have to put your appointments, peoples birthdays and events on a calendar so you do not forget?

4) If you have something that you usually do every week do you forget about it sometimes?

I hope everyone has a great weekend.

Dear Madame Zoltar

Madame Zoltar has returned to her home town for the annual Radish Festival..  She planned to do her blog from the site of the Festival, but evidently she had a little to much Red Radish Rose Wine.

"Knowing calligraphy will be awesome!"

From The Lonely Libertarian :

"Sunday, January 24, 2016

"Our local schools tried doing away with teaching cursive writing for a year. That's how long it lasted before parents protested. Kids, being the long-range thinkers they are, don't see the importance of knowing how to read and write cursive, so they were all for dropping a "useless, archaic form of communication" from their already overloaded with nonsense curriculum. A local man, WWII vet, former school teacher, principal, superintendent.  gave a lecture to every class that would welcome him on how the written word has been used to create and control societies through history. When only the elite can translate historic and religious texts, they can tell the populace anything they want. When only the elite can read the original Bill of Rights and Constitution, they can tell the ignorant citizens of this once great nation whatever serves their purposes and keeps the peasants in line. We are just a few generations away from this horror. Fight for your kids' rights to learn how to read and understand important documents on their own.

It's a whole different world out there

Great idea or pathetic?  In my day, the barber kept you engaged in conversation while he cut your hair.

"Illegal gambling in Racine bars continue to cause problems with fraudulent winner claims. Residents are questioning how the illegal gambling is allowed in the first place.

"Watch the video clip at the link below, of a Racine tavern owner catching an attempted fraudulent winning gambling ticket

"Illegal gambling has turned into a huge problem in Racine and more danger is sure to come as a result. The real question is why is nothing being done about the illegal gambling in Racine?

"Most alcohol industry profits come from problem drinkers - studies"

"Alcohol industry giants like Diageo, Anheuser-Busch InBev, and MillerCoors claim they promote responsible drinking, but a new study from the UK reveals the 'dirty little secret' that most of their profits come from 'harmful' and 'hazardous' customers.

"Of the estimated £37.8 billion ($54bn) profit reaped by English alcohol sales in 2013, £23.7 billion came from what health professionals call 'harmful' and 'hazardous' drinkers who risk their health and cause lethal damage, according to the Guardian.

"'Hazardous' drinkers consume more than 14 'units' per week, equal to about seven pints, whereas 'harmful', or 'risky', drinkers consume more than 50 units per week for men, or 35 for women.

"This can lead to liver problems, cancer, and anti-social problems like domestic abuse, drunk driving, and other forms of violence.

"Looking at data from the Health Survey for England, researchers from Southampton University were able to calculate how this translates in financial terms, concluding that £14.4 billion ($20bn) worth of sales came from 'hazardous' drinkers and £9.3 billion ($13bn) from 'harmful' drinkers.

"Official figures from England's Health & Social Care Information Centre show the fatal repercussions of consumption are 6,592 alcohol-related deaths in 2013, a ten percent increase in just ten years.

"This echoes a new report from Australia this week which was also shows the alcohol industry’s heavy reliance on risky drinkers.

"Australia’s main consumers of alcohol represent just 20 percent of the population, but account for over 74 percent of all the alcohol consumed each year.

"The findings demonstrate that if this 20 percent reduced their consumption to within the guidelines, the total alcohol consumed in Australia would decrease by 39 percent.

"'The alcohol industry is totally dependent on risky drinking,' Michael Thorn, CEO of the Foundation for Alcohol Research & Education, said. 'This is its dirty little secret. It’s an industry built on identifying, targeting and exploiting its best customers.'"

I don't think this is really something new.  I've heard of other such studies in the past.  I bet (get it?) that most of the gambling industry's profits come from problem gamblers or gambling addicts, too..
