NASA is offering $35,000 in prizes to design a toilet that will work on the moon

| NASA is seeking new designs for a toilet that will work on the moon. |
(CNN)NASA wants you to help put the loo in lunar, so it's offering $35,000 in prizes to design a toilet that can be used on the moon.
The space agency has set an ambitious goal of sending astronauts back to the moon by 2024 and the crew will obviously have to go to the bathroom during the mission.
NASA may adapt the toilet design for its Artemis lunar lander, so it will need to work both in the microgravity of space, or "zero-g," and on the moon, where the gravity is about a sixth of what we feel on Earth, according to the design guidelines posted by NASA and HeroX, which allows anyone to create challenges to solve a problem facing the world.
The mission will include the first female astronaut to ever travel to the moon, so the toilets will need to be able to accommodate men and women.
The toilet designs should also conserve water and "help maintain a pristine environment inside the lander that is free of odors and other contaminants."
"Bonus points will be awarded to designs that can capture vomit without requiring the crew member to put his/her head in the toilet," the guidelines said.
It should be able to support a crew of two astronauts for 14 days and allow for the transfer of the collected waste to storage or for disposal outside the vehicle.
The toilet should be easy to clean and maintain and should have a turnaround time of five minutes or less between uses. It also needs to use less than 70 watts of power and make less noise than an average bathroom fan.
Space will also be an issue, so the toilet needs to weigh less than 33 pounds on Earth and be less than .12 cubic meters in volume.
A toilet on board the International Space Station is about the size of a small closet.
The top prize is $20,000 and the second and third place winners will get $10,000 and $5,000. The deadline for submitting the designs is August 17 and the winners will be announced in October.

People Using T-Shirts in Place of Toilet Paper May Have Clogged Calif. Sewer System, City Says
One California city is warning its residents to stick to toilet paper after a shredded T-shirt flushed down the toilet caused a sewer backup.
The city of Redding said in a news release that its Wastewater Management responded on Wednesday to a sewer backup at one of its lift stations after someone apparently used shredded T-shirts in place of toilet paper.
“Wastewater management was able to avert a spill but is concerned about the larger environmental and health ramifications presented by this backup,” the release said.
The city doubled down on the importance of flushing only toilet paper, despite the fact that it’s been in high demand and sold out of many grocery stores as people self-isolate and socially distance themselves amid the coronavirus outbreak.
“It is crucial — at all times, but especially during the evolving circumstances surrounding COVID-19 — for the public to refrain from putting anything aside from toilet paper down the toilet. If you should need to use anything aside from toilet paper, remember this important message: ‘Bag it. Don’t flush it,’” the release said.

Bidet sales soar as toilet paper sells out amid COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic
As
cases of the coronavirus continue to climb, nothing feels more
surreal than the irrational stockpiling of toilet paper, even though
experts tell us it isn’t necessary and manufacturers say there is
no shortage.
Whether
it stems from a herd mentality, reading social media posts about
toilet paper fights, or an overwhelming sense of helplessness, one
thing is certain: the panic buying of toilet paper has prompted bidet
sales to soar.
While
Americans have long been resistant to bidets — a common feature in
European toilets where jets of water clean you off instead of toilet
paper — the spread of the coronavirus seems to be changing longtime
views on self-washing.
Inexpensive
entry-level styles of the Toto washlet bidet seat can be found at big
box stores like Home Depot, Wayfair and Lowes for as low as $250. And
new affordable alternatives, like the Tushy bidet, allow you to clip
on a bidet attachment without plumbing (it draws water from the
toilet’s supply line) and electricity for the cost of toilet paper
on EBay right now — $79 for a classic bidet and $109 for the warm
water spa version.
“Tushy’s
sales over the past few weeks have grown from double to triple to
more like 10-times what they were in weeks before word spread about
TP shortages,” said Jason Ojalvo, CEO of Tushy. “This could be
the tipping point that finally gets Americans to adopt the bidet.”
Brondell,
which sells bidet attachments, hand-held bidet sprayers and luxurious
bidet seats, has also seen a boost in sales in the wake of the
pandemic.
“In
the midst of this unprecedented toilet paper run, we’re really
grateful for the opportunity to provide those who need them with
smart solutions for toilet paper replacement,” said Daniel Lalley
communications director for Brondell.
