VP candidate Tim Walz campaigns in Racine

From The Journal Times.com:

Caroline Neal

RACINE — Democratic vice presidential nominee Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz stopped in Racine on Tuesday evening as in-person absentee voting kicked off across the state.

Hosted at Memorial Hall, 72 Seventh St., the event concluded his day in Wisconsin, after traveling to Madison with former President Barack Obama.

At the rally in Racine, Walz urged the hundreds of attendees to vote early and spoke about Democratic presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris’ plans to support health care and small businesses, and minimize costs for middle-class Americans.

“Fourteen days until the polls close, people," Walz said. "Fourteen days until this election, so we know it’s there. Look, we’re running like everything’s on the line because everything’s on the line.”

At the rally, Walz said Harris is “laying out a new way forward with opportunity for all of us.”

He discussed Harris’s plan to give up to $6,000 in tax credits for families and criticized price gouging in industries.

Walz said that despite claims from Republicans, they believe in capitalism, but capitalism is not “when you hear a hurricane’s coming to Florida and all of a sudden the airline’s jack up the price."

“They’re looking at a new generation of entrepreneurs, a new generation of making sure our kids thrive, and Kamala’s put out a plan to make sure small businesses can get $20,000 forgivable grant and then $50,000 tax credit to get them off the ground and to make a difference,” said Walz, adding that “it’s time to give the tax cuts to the middle class.”

Access to reproductive health care was also a prominent topic in Walz’s speech, with him mentioning that he and his wife used fertility treatments.

“I’ll be damned if anyone, let alone Donald Trump and JD Vance, should have any damn say in the family that you have, of stopping you from having that,” he said.

He also said that when Harris is elected, along with a Democratic senate and house, Harris will sign Roe v. Wad back into law.

He called on men specifically to vote for the vice president.

“So I’ll tell you what, guys, we’re going to have to get this right," Walz said. "We’re going to have to get to the polls. We’re going to have to vote because the women are doing their job, we need to do ours right now.”

Walz spoke to the crowd about the necessity of voting, saying that while some people say they made it through one Trump term, the stakes are higher in this election.

“The Donald Trump of 2016 who was elected is not the Donald Trump of today by any stretch of the imagination,” Walz said. “He is talking now, openly, about sending the United States military against people who don’t support him.”

Walz pushed back on the “both sides” claims from some people, saying, “You’re not hearing Democratic politicians talking about sending the military against people.”

He told the crowd that the way to prevent this from happening is by “beating them at the ballot box,” calling on people to vote.

“Look, 14 days. We’re still the underdogs in this thing," Walz said. "We have got to leave it all on the field. This is the time.”

Both the Democratic and Republican campaigns have prioritized stops in Wisconsin leading up to the Nov. 5 election.

Vance is expected to be in Racine on Monday to deliver remarks at Memorial Hall.

'Trump is descending into this madness': In Racine, Walz decries Trump's reported Hitler remarks

From JSOnline:

Ricardo Torres
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

RACINE – In a Wisconsin campaign stop Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz slammed former President Donald Trump over published reports that the Republican presidential nominee had spoken admiringly during his term in office of Adolf Hitler and his generals.

“As a 24-year veteran of the military, that makes me sick as hell, and it should make you sick," Walz said to the crowd at Memorial Hall in Racine on Tuesday night. "The guardrails are gone. Trump is descending into this madness.”

The Minnesota governor made the remarks during the second of two stops in Wisconsin and after an earlier rally in Madison with former President Barack Obama. With less than two weeks left in the presidential race, polling shows a narrow race between Trump and Democratic candidate Kamala Harris.

In a story published Tuesday, The Atlantic's Jeffrey Goldberg reported Trump proclaimed, "I need the kind of generals Hitler had," citing two anonymous sources said to have heard the private conversation.

In an interview with the New York Times, Trump's former chief of staff, retired Marine general John Kelly, recounted Trump speaking in positive terms about the Nazi leader.

"He commented more than once that, 'You know, Hitler did some good things, too,'" Kelly told the Times.

Kelly in the Times interview said he regards Trump as meeting the definition of a fascist.

“Well, looking at the definition of fascism: It’s a far-right authoritarian, ultranationalist political ideology and movement characterized by a dictatorial leader, centralized autocracy, militarism, forcible suppression of opposition, belief in a natural social hierarchy,” he said.

Mr. Kelly said that definition accurately described Mr. Trump.

“So certainly, in my experience, those are the kinds of things that he thinks would work better in terms of running America,” Mr. Kelly said.

Kelly's tenure in the White House was tumultuous, even as he tried to bring Marine Corps-style order to the administration. After Kelly left, Trump was critical of him, saying he was not able to keep up with the demands of the job.

"John Kelly has totally beclowned himself with these debunked stories he has fabricated because he failed to serve his President well while working as Chief of Staff and currently suffers from a debilitating case of Trump Derangement Syndrome," spokesperson Steven Cheung said in an emailed statement to USA TODAY.

On Wednesday morning the Harris campaign organized a virtual call with Brigadier Gen. Steve Anderson, a Republican, and retired Army Reserve Colonel Kevin Carroll responded to Trump's reported remarks.

"He constantly seems to confuse loyalty to the Constitution to loyalty to him," Anderson said. "We're concerned that (if re-elected) he wants to use the military to suppress his opposition in the country and man the U.S. border. Which are things the military is not supposed to do."

Anderson said he wishes Kelly spoke up sooner "but it's great that he has."

"People that know (Trump) best are most opposed to him, his presidency," Anderson said.

Carroll, who was in Trump administration and served under Kelly when he was secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, said Kelly speaking out "was no small step for him."

"He's seen Donald Trump up close in a way very few Americans have and he's warning us that a second Trump term would be dangerous," Carroll said. "The former president's statements have been getting more and more unhinged."

USA TODAY contributed reporting.

At least one Wisconsin resident sickened by E. coli bacteria after eating at McDonald's

From JSOnline:

Drake Bentley
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

An E. coli outbreak linked to McDonald's quarter-pounder beef patties has sickened at least one Wisconsin resident, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Tuesday.

The agency announced at least 49 people have been sickened across 10 states, with 10 people requiring hospitalization and one death.

It's unclear what area of the state the person resides in or which McDonald's location had food contaminated with the bacteria. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

The CDC said most people are reporting eating the quarter-pounder hamburger at McDonald's before becoming sick but it is not yet known which specific food ingredient is contaminated.

McDonald's stopped using fresh slivered onions and quarter-pound beef patties in several states, according to statement from the fast-food giant. As of Tuesday, Wisconsin was not one of those states.

The first reported illness was about a month ago and the outbreak largely impacted Colorado and its surrounding states but has spread as far west as Oregon and east as Wisconsin, according to the CDC. The reported death was an older adult and occurred in Colorado, the agency said.

The CDC said it can take three to four weeks to determine if a sick person is part of an outbreak and the amount of people infected with the bacteria is likely larger than reported as some people are treated for illness but never test for E. coli.

Most people infected with the bacteria experience severe stomach cramps, bloody diarrhea, vomiting, dehydration and a high fever. Symptoms usually start three to four days after swallowing E. coli. Most people recover without treatment after five to seven days. Some people may develop serious kidney problems and need to be hospitalized.

If you are experiencing symptoms of E. coli after eating a quarter-pounder at McDonald's, call your your health care provider.

Polls across the state of Wisconsin open at 7 a.m. and will close at 8 p.m.

Do you need your voter registration card to vote in Wisconsin?

No, you do not need to bring your voter registration card to vote.

But you do need to bring a current photo ID. The WEC says acceptable forms of photo ID include:

  • Driver’s license or ID issued by the Wisconsin Division of Motor Vehicles
  • Receipt issued by the DMV if your new driver’s license or ID doesn’t arrive by Election Day
  • Passport
  • Military and Veteran Affairs ID card
  • Tribal ID card

Can you vote early anywhere in your county?

To find your early voting polling place, click here.

Your polling place on Election Day is determined by your address, but you can go to any early voting site as long as it's in your municipality, meaning the city, town or village you live in.

Similarly, absentee drop boxes can only accept ballots from voters who reside in the municipality. For example, someone living in Greenfield couldn’t submit a ballot at a Milwaukee drop box.
