A Bailout for Newspapers?

Connecticut lawmakers are petitioning state government to help local newspapers: 2009: The Year of the Newspaper Bailout?

Of course, some people are already pointing out the obvious: How objective will newspapers' reporting be on government matters if the government is paying their bills? Kind of like, what kind of reporting can you expect on a newspaper's largest advertisers?

What a farce.

Meanwhile, on the local front:

The Journal Sentinel Online: Lee Enterprises debt raises concerns about future

The Racine Post: Journal Times' parent reports huge loss for 2008

The Journal Times: POLICE REPORTS: Jan. 2

Personally, I favor the idea of directly rewarding multimillionaire CEOs who drive their businesses into the ground with our money because it is a much more cost effective way of screwing the taxpayer than all those lies and bullshit that the government usually dishes out.

Btw, apparently it's ok to call someone a moron on the Journal Times site again. Or at least you can call the governor that.

Didn't I just read that gas prices will go up because people have cut back on consumption... so, not enough revenue is being generated with the current rate of state tax? Be prepared... one way or the other, you will pay!

Great news! No crime in Racine.... Should be the headline! Didn't you ever notice that Racine proper is never included in the Police Reports? It is always just county reports.

All this fuss and bother about the JT going under. Someone, somewhere will take up the slack. (JTI? j/k!)

Weeding out the poorly run businesses is just like survival of the fittest in the animal world. Sometimes it is necessary for the bigger picture.

Btw, orbs don't be so moronic... LMAO! That was specifically one of BOB's spelled out banning words.

How well do the networks do at covering things such as the Telecommunications Act of 1996? How well did they do at covering the repeated efforts to push back the transition to digital television so they could keep their current frequencies? How well does television news cover the DMCA? All these things directly benefit broadcasters and they give no coverage when they come up for votes (with the possible exception of NPR who covered all the stories I mentioned and pointed out the broadcast and cable networks lack of coverage).

If you are lobbying the government, you sure don't report what you are asking for!

If we take over for the JT, I volunteer as the science reporter :)

I don't think I ever seen anything in the JT about Lee Enterprises stock issues.

I volunteer for CEO, from all that I hear, it is a pretty sweet gig... ;>

Yep...MR.SID (Moron, racist, stupid, idoit(ic) and dumb. Those are the words they said would get you banned. Now I am wondering if they have to be directed at another specific blogger. Because we all know there are moronic issues, racist issues, stupidity and idiotic situations.

Some of the bloggers over there can be pretty vicious to each other. I, like DA, try to steer clear of their blogs. It is their opinion or none and there is nothing I or you can do about it. They are not willing to listen to alternatives. In all fairness, I think they were trying to get the bloggers to 'play nice.'

If we take over, I'm going to jam that Astro-Graph column right down Bernice Bede Osol's throat.

Politely, of course.

MinnesotaChick said...

I noticed that SER. Didn't go out for a day and then gas is up to 1.89!

Oh, I filled up yesterday with premium at 1.85...not so bad...when I drove to WI last summer, remember the trip that was planned but some tweens! Anyway, gas averaged $4/gal...almost had to take a loan out for that trip.

It is nice to fill up for less than $55/tank.
