Texting While Driving

UPDATED

Wisconsin's first homicide by texting while driving prosecution ended Friday with a Sun Prairie woman receiving a year in prison for the death of a UW-Madison student on East Johnson Street in 2010.

"I know my apology is hard to accept, but it comes from the deepest part of my heart," she said.
this is the woman who orginally told police it was his fault because he was on the road when she it hit him

In addition to prison and extended supervision, Ehlke ordered Kanoff to spend 100 hours speaking to young people learning to drive and other groups about the dangers of texting while driving. He also ordered that she not drive with a phone that's turned on in the driver's area of a car. She will also have to take a driving safety course to get her license back after a mandatory yearlong revocation.

Wisconsin has passed a law it is illegal to “text” while driving.

When a death is caused because of texting, do you feel the individual doing the texting should receive prison time and how much?

Precedence, unfortunately it can either work for you or against you in a court of law.

It never ceases to amaze me how stupid some people can be; and they always want to blame the other person for their stupidity.

I believe this is one of the first cases in the court system since the law has been past and I thoroughly believe a “precedence” should be set.

This individual (to me) should spend at least 10 years in prison and upon release she should not be able to drive for another 2 years.

Does that sound to harsh...what if it was your son who was killed because of her stupidity, how would you feel?

if somebody causes the loss of life of another, 10 years should be the minimum, especially something so senseless as texting

More and more people are loosing sight of the fact that driving a motor vehicle is serious business.

Just for the heck of it, I turned up this episode from an old tv series. It's just as relevent today even if they didn't have cell phones back then.

There is a link that will allow you to watch the whole episode from hulu.

I voted for 9 or more years - I would have voted for LIFE if that was a choice! It is time to treat driving, i.e. being in control of, a potentially deadly object, as a serious matter - and using that vehicle to kill another - through negligence - as a serious crime!

I remember in Kenosha a woman drove off the road, for no reason, in good weather, and drown her own child. NO CHARGES WERE BROUGHT!

WHAT? How about the innocent blood of her child? It's still manslaughter! And the woman didn't even get a ticket! She should have lost her license for life! What person drives off the road into a Lake "for no reason" in daylight in good weather? THAT IS SOMEONE WHO CLEARLY SHOULDN'T BE DRIVING - YET - she kept her license!!

I hope this "TEXTER" gets the maximum sentence possible!

Oh yeah - anyone remember when the person, an honor student I believe, went through the stop sign on Kentucky St. and killed another person - I remember the cries for clemency - even though the driver took the life of another - well, it should be swept under the rug.

Does anyone remember that one, and what happened there?

Texting while driving is just as bad as drunk driving, but we don't take that very seriously in Wisconsin, either.

I know a guy who was a front seat passenger in a car that was struck head-on by a teenage texter. One of his legs is screwed up for life.

Off with their heads!

Not only did she Text and Drive, but she tried to squeeze her way out of It by lying. She deserves the MAX. She probably doesn't know It, but she will be PAYING for this the REST of her life.

A cell phone Is all I have for phone service, and I wear It around my neck with a cord, so I don't lose It. When I drive I always use a Bluetooth ear piece, which Is fine just for answering the phone, but EVEN just to call someone Is terribly difficult to do while driving without being all over the road. I actually believe phones should NOT be allowed to be used by ANY driver. As for texting. I don't even understand why the technology was even developed, let alone using while driving. I don't care how good a person thinks they are at texting, It cannot be done safely while driving.

I haven't commented before because it is a very hard issue. I feel for all parties involved. It is a tragedy for the families of the deceased and for the person and families of those accused. I think we need more education and an absolute ban on even taking a call while moving, blue-tooth or not. Nothing is so important that it can't wait.

My mom used to talk my ear off while I was driving her around. Even that, becoming involved in a deep conversation, was distracting. There are so many people on the road, and people driving like maniacs- too fast, it is tough enough to get safely from point A to point B.

I kinda like the guy playing the sax, but please not when you're driving.

It is a terrible tragedy,

My original thought was to lock her up for a long time to set precedence which can (I hope) make people think when they text while driving.

One year...I personally think that was/is way too light of a jail sentence even though it will play on her mind and the minds of families on both sides.
