"State-financed manure digester plagued by spills, explosion"

From JSOnline:

Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources

"An experimental project in Dane County designed to capture livestock waste that pollutes Lake Mendota has been hit by a litany of troubles, including manure spills and a 2014 incident that caused a fire and methane gas explosion.

"A state-financed manure digester system near Waunakee is the first of its kind in Wisconsin. It has been touted by supporters, including Dane County officials, for generating electricity, limiting the spreading of excess cattle manure and reducing emissions of greenhouse gases.

"But the $12 million system — financed with $3.3 million in state funds — has fallen far short of expectations.

"In three years, pipeline breaks have caused three manure spills, totaling more than 400,000 gallons. In August, an explosion of methane gas knocked the roof off one of the digesters, sending smoke billowing high into the air.

"The state Department of Natural Resources started enforcement action against the developer, Milwaukee-based Clear Horizons, for the spills, lax record keeping and violating agreements to remove a key pollutant from the manure. In November, the DNR referred the matter to Justice Department lawyers for prosecution, documents show.

"Despite the subsidy, Clear Horizon said that it had lost $2.8 million since the start of the project in late 2010, according to the DNR in a March 25, 2014, document reviewing the company's troubles."

I think that's a great idea: explode our poop.  Every time you've done your duty, lower the toilet lid and a small explosion will vaporize your poop.
