Kamala Harris follows Kaw Nation’s Charles Curtis as the second person of color to become vice president
![]() |
| LIBRARY OF CONGRESS |
For all of Kamala Harris' impressive firsts, she’s not the first person of color elected vice president of the United States.
That was achieved by Charles Curtis, a Native American lawmaker and member of the Kaw Nation, who served under President Herbert Hoover some 90 years ago.
Curtis, a conservative Kansas Republican, reveled in the prestige of the vice presidency. Despite widespread discrimination against Native Americans, he celebrated his ethnicity, often boasting of his rise “from Kaw tepee to Capitol," decorating his office with artifacts, and posing for photos in a feathered headdress.
He and Hoover disliked each other. The president rarely sought his advice. Both men, having presided over the stock market crash that commenced the Great Depression, were swept from office after a single term in Franklin Roosevelt’s 42-state landslide in 1932.

KUTV — Now's the time to watch the Leonid meteor shower, which will peak early in the week.
The Leonids are expected to peak on Nov. 16 and 17, according to CNN. If you're planning on watching the meteor shower this week, be sure to look for long, fast meteors which include bright fireballs and earth grazers that fly close to the horizon with their long, colorful trails.
According to NASA, The Leonids peak every year in mid-November and are considered to be a major meteor shower despite meteor rates as low as 15 per hour. The Leonids are bright, colorful, and fast: the meteors travel at a speed of 44 miles per second.
Leonid storms, in which observers on Earth are able to see thousands of these meteors rain down, occur every 33 years. The last Leonid storm happened in 2002.
NASA also provided the following tips for anyone interesting in watching the meteor shower this year:
The Leonids are best viewed starting at about midnight local time. Find an area well away from city or street lights. Come prepared for winter temperatures with a sleeping bag, blanket or lawn chair. Orient yourself with your feet towards east, lie flat on your back, and look up, taking in as much of the sky as possible. In less than 30 minutes in the dark, your eyes will adapt and you will begin to see meteors. Be patient -- the show will last until dawn, so you have plenty of time to catch a glimpse."
NASA has a handy guide for photographing meteor showers for anyone interested in taking photos of the Leonids or other meteor showers.

Belgian Racing Pigeon Sells for Record-Breaking $1.9 Million to Unidentified Chinese Buyer
New Kim, a Belgian-bred racing pigeon, sold to an unidentified Chinese buyer for a record-breaking $1.9 million on Sunday after a two week auction, according to the Associated Press. The 3-year-old hen was nabbed by a bidder who went by the moniker “Super Duper,” who beat out another person dubbed “Hitman.” New Kim’s new ownership is the result of a fire sale by Belgian breeder Gaston Van de Wouwer, who is retiring after all 445 of his birds are sold off at auction. A decade ago, the record price for a pigeon was just one-tenth of New Kim’s price. Pigeon racing, once a hobby for Western European working class men, has become popular in China among the wealthy, driving up demand across the globe. Belgium is considered the world’s best place for pigeon breeding.
The Biden Crime Family - Just like the Clinton Crime Family
A cancer charity started by Joe Biden gave out no money to research, and spent most of its contributions on staff salaries, federal filings show.
The Biden Cancer Initiative was founded in 2017 by the former vice president and his wife Jill Biden to “develop and drive implementation of solutions to accelerate progress in cancer prevention, detection, diagnosis, research and care and to reduce disparities in cancer outcomes,” according to its IRS mission statement. But it gave out no grants in its first two years, and spent millions on the salaries of former Washington DC aides it hired.
The charity took in $4,809,619 in contributions in fiscal years 2017 and 2018, and spent $3,070,301 on payroll in those two years. The group’s president, Gregory Simon, raked in $429,850 in fiscal 2018 (July 1, 2018 to June 30, 2019), according to the charity’s most recent federal tax filings.
Simon, a former Pfizer executive and longtime health care lobbyist who headed up the White House’s cancer task force in the Obama administration, saw his salary nearly double from the $224,539 he made in fiscal 2017, tax filings show.
Danielle Carnival, former chief of staff for Obama’s cancer initiative, the Cancer Moonshot Task Force, who took home $258,207 in 2018.

Biden Campaign Director Arrested For Electoral Fraud
The Democrat Director of Texas state political strategy for the Joe Biden Presidential campaign has been arrested for electoral fraud.
Democratic Party operative Dallas Jones was formally accused of helping to run an illegal ballot harvesting operation in the state of Texas on behalf of the Joe Biden campaign during this contested Presidential election.
According to the National File, two investigators, including a former FBI agent and former police officer, testified under oath that they have Democratic Party internal documentation, as well as video evidence and witnesses, for their investigation.
The following is an affidavit from private investigator and retired Houston police officer Mark A. Aguirre, which was submitted under oath.
“My name is Mark A. Aguirre. I am above the age of eighteen years and am fully competent to make this affidavit. The facts stated in this affidavit are within my personal knowledge and are true and correct.
“I am a retired captain with the Houston Police Department. I am now a private investigator.
“I am currently involved in an investigation related to a wide-ranging and fraudulent ballot harvesting scheme in Harris County intended to rig the elections in the Houston/Harris County area. This scheme involves voter fraud on a massive scale.
“Based on interviews, review of documents, and other information, I have identified the individuals in charge of the ballot harvesting scheme. These individuals include political consultant Dallas Jones, who was recently hired by the Joe Biden for President campaign to oversee their Harris County initiative, District 13 Texas State Senator Borris Miles, who is the handler of Mr. Jones, political consultant Gerald Womack, and Precinct 1 Harris County Commissioner Rodney Ellis. One of the companies these individuals are using as a front for this operation is AB Canvassing, although there are others that have been identified that we are investigating.”
“I have in my possession video-taped interviews of witnesses attesting to the aforementioned people having groups of people completing thousands of absentee and mail-in ballots, including completing ballots for deceased individuals; illegally going into nursing homes, with the complicity of the nursing home staff, and filling out and forging the signatures of nursing home residents; signing up homeless individuals to vote using the ballot harvester’s address, then completing the ballot and forging the homeless individual’s signature.
“This entire operation is being run by the elite politicians of the Democrat Party in Houston/Harris County.”

Racine Common Council selection process set for open seat
by Denise Lockwood
RACINE – The Racine Common Council on Friday set the procedure for filling the vacancy caused by the sudden death of Alderwoman Carrie Glenn on Oct. 28. Glenn represented the 10th District, located on the city’s southeast side.
Glenn was first elected to the Common Council in 2018 and re-elected this past spring.
Racine Common Council selection process
To keep consistent with past practice, Common Council President John Tate II and the Common Council have instructed the Racine City Clerk to solicit letters of interest and resumes from eligible persons living in the 10th aldermanic district. Documents will be due to the City Clerk’s office by 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 27.
The Council’s Committee of the Whole will meet (virtually) to interview the interested candidates on Tuesday, Dec.1. Candidates must be available to participate in those interviews to be eligible for consideration.
The Committee of the Whole will then make a recommendation to the Common Council, which will take a vote. Any appointment would be to fill the remainder of Glenn’s term, which ends in April 2022.
All eligible applicants should submit a letter of interest and a resume to the Office of the Clerk at Clerks@cityofracine.org or mail to Attention: City Clerk, 730 Washington Ave, Rm 103, Racine, WI 53403. Questions should be directed to the City Clerk’s Office at (262) 636-9171.
Candidate steps forward
An interested candidate has already come forward. Sam Peete, a STEM education teacher at 21st Century Preparatory School, announced Friday afternoon that he plans to apply for the vacant seat. Peete lost to Glenn in the spring election by 40 votes (599 to 559).
“I care deeply about the 10th district. We have built a safe community with a diverse population that is inclusive to all people, and I am proud of that,” Peete said in a statement. “I want to be the 10th District Alderman because our neighborhoods have shown me that we are stronger when we work together, and there is more that unites us than divides us.”
Peete is currently a member of the City Design, Heritage and Planning Commission and the Zoning Board of Appeals.

Top al Qaeda operative was tracked and killed by US and Israel: report

The U.S. coordinated with Israel to track and kill al Qaeda’s No. 2 official in a shooting in Tehran in August, The Associated Press reported on Saturday.
The New York Times reported on Friday that two Israeli agents were acting at the behest of the U.S. when they shot Abdullah Ahmed Abdullah, also known as Abu Muhammad al-Masri, from a motorcycle on Aug. 7, the seventh anniversary of the bombings of the American embassies in Africa.
His daughter, the widow of Osama bin Laden’s son Hamza bin Laden, was also killed.
Former current and U.S. officials told the AP that the U.S. provided intelligence to Israel on where they could find Abdullah and the alias he was using.
An official in the intelligence community and a former CIA officer briefed on the matter told the news outlet that he was killed by Kidon, a unit within Israeli spy organization Mossad that handles killings of high-value targets.
The intelligence community official also told AP that his daughter Maryam was a target because the U.S. believed she was being groomed for a leadership role in al Qaeda and intelligence suggested she was involved in operational planning.
The Hill has reached out to the White House, CIA and National Security Council for comment.
Abdullah’s death had been rumored for months, though it was not confirmed until Friday. At the time, it was unclear how involved the U.S. was in his death.
Abdullah was one of al Qaeda’s founding members and was believed to be second-in-command to the insurgent group’s current leader Ayman al-Zawahri.
The U.S. had a $10 million bounty on his head over the 1998 bombings.
Iran initially tried to cover up the killing, saying the dead man was Habib Daoud, a Lebanese history professor and a member of Hezbollah, a Lebanese Shiite militant group bankrolled by Tehran.
North Dakota mandates masks, capacity limits as virus surges

North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum ordered a statewide mask mandate and imposed several business restrictions late Friday in an effort to contain the spread of the coronavirus that has stressed the state’s hospital capacity.
The Republican governor’s executive order comes after increased pressure from doctors, nurses and other health care professionals to require face coverings. The directive goes into effect Saturday and will last until Dec. 13.
Burgum said in a statement that doctors and nurses “need our help, and they need it now.”
The mandate requires residents to wear face coverings in indoor businesses and indoor public settings, as well as outdoor public settings where physical distancing isn’t possible.

Judge Rules Acting DHS Secretary Lacked Authority To Suspend DACA Program

A federal judge in New York City says Chad Wolf was not legally serving as the acting secretary of homeland security when he issued a memo in July that stopped new applicants to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.
Therefore, Judge Nicholas Garaufis of the U.S. District Court of the Eastern District of New York ruled Saturday, Wolf's memo is invalid.
It's the latest court ruling against the Trump administration's attempts to undo the Obama-era program that currently protects about 640,000 young immigrants who were brought to the U.S. illegally as children.
In June, the Supreme Court blocked the Trump administration's attempt in 2017 to cancel DACA, saying the administration's reasoning was "arbitrary and capricious." In July, a federal court in Maryland told the administration to start accepting new applicants.
Instead, Wolf issued a memo on July 28 that, Judge Garaufis wrote, "effectively suspended DACA" pending a Department of Homeland Security review. Wolf's memo said the administration would reject new applicants. It also said the administration would renew protections for immigrants who already have them, but for just one year, instead of two years, which was the previous policy.
