Failed Partnerships And Vacant Buildings: Foxconn's Wisconsin Commitment Remains At A Standstill

Light shines in to a vacant space on the first floor of Haymarket Landing on Friday, Feb. 26, 2021, in Eau Claire, Wis. Angela Major/WPR

In late February, Foxconn executives announced plans to begin manufacturing electric vehicles for California-based start-up Fisker Inc.

Both companies said the collaboration will "revolutionize the automotive industry." They compared their work to the scientific discoveries of Isaac Newton. And hinted they could even manufacture the cars here in Wisconsin.

The partnership announcement is the latest for the Taiwanese mega-manufacturer. It follows a string of high-profile announcements that have been abandoned by Foxconn or that have severely underperformed the company's promises.

There were the coffee kiosks, which promised "a cutting-edge, cloud-based, robotic retail platform" for caffeine sales. There were the ventilators that were going to be produced in Wisconsin to help respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. Both projects ended soon after they were announced.

With Fisker, Foxconn Technology Group Chairman Young-way Liu says global leaders in innovation are joining forces. But critics who have followed the company are skeptical.

Instagram Rolls Out New Way to Say Something Stupid in Public

Image: Instagram

Instagram is expanding its livestreaming offerings with a new feature dubbed Live Rooms, which is just like Instagram Live but with up to three more people haphazardly broadcasting their thoughts into the world simultaneously.

Instagram’s Live Rooms add to the increasingly crowded livestreaming space, which includes everything from Twitch to TikTok, to audio-only Clubhouse and Twitter’s Spaces. And because most of us have absolutely no business livestreaming for any reason, it also represents an increasing focus on social media geared towards professional creators, celebrities, and brands while creating new moderation challenges for the platforms themselves.

The functionality of Live Rooms is simple and straightforward. From the home screen on Instagram, swipe left and select the Live option. You can add a title and then tap on the users who you’d like to include. Live Rooms also lets the person who launches the stream to add “guests” to join them mid-broadcast: “for example, you could start with two guests, and add a surprise guest as the third participant later! 🥳,” Instagram writes in its press release about the feature.

Boy Scouts propose more than $300 million, Norman Rockwell paintings to settle sex abuse claims

The Boy Scouts of America unveiled its reorganization plan Monday in bankruptcy court as it attempts to deal with tens of thousands of sex abuse claims from former Scouts.
(Associated Press)

 KIM CHRISTENSENSTAFF WRITER

The Boy Scouts of America, struggling to stay afloat while compensating tens of thousands of survivors of past sexual abuse, on Monday pledged to provide a victims’ trust fund with at least $300 million from its local councils and proceeds from insurance policies and the sale of a collection of Norman Rockwell oil paintings.

The offer was detailed in a reorganization plan submitted by the Scouts, which filed for bankruptcy protection last year amid a wave of new sex abuse lawsuits after several states, including California, New York and New Jersey, expanded legal options for childhood victims to sue.

The 379-page plan, filed late Monday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware, did not place a total on how much the 111-year-old youth organization is willing to pay to settle more than 85,000 sex abuse claims by former scouts.

Details must still be negotiated with plaintiffs’ attorneys, who are not likely to readily settle for what is in the plan, which excludes high-adventure camps and other valuable real estate around the country. At the time of the bankruptcy, the national organization had assets of more than $1 billion, with billions more held by local councils.

Gov. Cuomo Responds To Sexual Harassment Allegations | NBC Nightly News

Third Woman Accuses Cuomo Of Sexual Harassment -- And There's A Picture

From ZeroHedge:

Update (2005ET):  A third woman, former Obama administration and Biden 2020 campaign member Anna Ruch, has come forward to accuse New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) of sexual harassment at a Sept. 2019 wedding reception, according to the New York Times.

The governor was working the room after toasting the newlyweds, and when he came upon Ms. Ruch, now 33, she thanked him for his kind words about her friends. But what happened next instantly unsettled her: Mr. Cuomo put his hand on Ms. Ruch’s bare lower back, she said in an interview on Monday.

When she removed his hand with her own, Ms. Ruch recalled, the governor remarked that she seemed “aggressive” and placed his hands on her cheeks. He asked if he could kiss her, loudly enough for a friend standing nearby to hear. Ms. Ruch was bewildered by the entreaty, she said, and pulled away as the governor drew closer.

“I was so confused and shocked and embarrassed,” said Ms. Ruch, whose recollection was corroborated by the friend, contemporaneous text messages and photographs from the event. “I turned my head away and didn’t have words in that moment.”

And there's a picture...

Ruch said Cuomo's touch on her bare skin was uncomfortable, and "I promptly removed his hand with my hand, which I would have thought was a clear enough indicator that I was not wanting him to touch me."

Cuomo instead called her "aggressive" and placed his hands on her cheeks.

"He said, ‘Can I kiss you?" claims Ruch. "I felt so uncomfortable and embarrassed when really he is the one who should have been embarrassed."

Shaken, Ms. Ruch said, she later had to ask a friend if Mr. Cuomo’s lips had made contact with her face as she pulled away. The governor had kissed her cheek, she was told.

“It’s the act of impunity that strikes me,” Ms. Ruch said. “I didn’t have a choice in that matter. I didn’t have a choice in his physical dominance over me at that moment. And that’s what infuriates me. And even with what I could do, removing his hand from my lower back, even doing that was not clear enough.” -NYT

Several days after the example, Ruch discussed the incident with a friend - texting the friend "I'm so pissed," referring to Cuomo as "this guy," with an un-reported epithet.

As the Times notes, "Ms. Ruch’s example is distinct from those of the former aides: A former member of the Obama administration and the 2020 Biden campaign, Ms. Ruch has never been employed by the governor or the state. But her experience reinforces the escalating concerns and accusations about Mr. Cuomo’s personal conduct — a pattern of words and actions that have, at minimum, made three women who are decades his junior feel deeply uncomfortable, in their collective telling."

Has anyone heard from Women's March of late?

And will this young hotdog swallowing reporter come forward with her #MeToo moment before this is over?

Update (1755ET): New York Democrats are calling for Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) to resign following two sexual misconduct allegations which followed a bombshell COVID-19 nursing home scandal, according to The Hill. A growing number of legislators and journalists, meanwhile, have come forward to accuse Cuomo of various bullying tactics.

"There’s an ongoing pattern here of abuse of power. It’s making the working relationship with the governor a real distraction from the work we have to do for the people," said state Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara (D). "I firmly believe that the governor’s resignation is for the good of the state at this point."

Jodie Foster fulfills promise to thank Packers QB Aaron Rodgers at Golden Globes

LOS ANGELES — Jodie Foster thanked Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers at the Golden Globes, fulfilling a promise the actress had made before she won.

Foster clarified Sunday night that she did not introduce Rodgers to actress Shailene Woodley, who recently confirmed her engagement to the NFL’s MVP.

“I have never met Aaron Rodgers, but it is possible that I do like to talk about how much I love the Green Bay Packers,” Foster said in virtual comments backstage. “Sometimes I can talk a little bit too much about that, so of course Shailene was very aware of my enthusiasm for the team.”

Foster won for supporting actress in a motion picture for “The Mauritanian,” in which she co-stars with Woodley.

“I just got a very cute video from Aaron Rodgers where he says he’s going to get me back,” Foster told reporters, “so I’m looking forward to this. We’ll see who wins.”

The public back-and-forth between Oscar winner Foster and Rodgers began in early February, when he thanked Foster after being named MVP at the NFL Honors show. Rodgers casually dropped in the news that he was engaged during his acceptance speech.

Foster later said on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” that she would thank Rodgers if she won a Globe, and she kept her promise.

The Mount Pleasant Police Department responded to a three-vehicle crash near Durand Avenue and Sheridan Road around 2:47 a.m. Sunday.

When officers arrived on the scene, they found one vehicle fully engulfed in flames and two others with heavy damage.

Officers confirmed that the engulfed vehicle was not occupied at the time and learned that the operator fled the scene before their arrival.

Upon further investigation, it was concluded that a Ford pick-up truck traveling Southbound in the Northbound lanes on STH 32 collided head-on with a GMC Yukon SUV that was traveling Northbound on STH 32.

The GMC Yukon swerved, attempting to prevent the collision but was unsuccessful. Due to the severity of the collision, the Yukon burst into flames.

Shortly after, a third vehicle involved, a Chevrolet Equinox traveling Northbound on STH 32 ended up colliding with the Ford.

‘He's not fit to lead the country’: Tara Reade and Green Party VP candidate Angela Walker discuss Joe Biden and surviving assault

From RT:
Angela Walker ©  howiehawkins.us
Activist and 2020 candidate Angela Walker reveals the trials of running for office as a woman and why she will never run again, but isn’t giving up the fight.

My path has crossed with some amazing people in 2019 and 2020 as I came forward about Joe Biden. As the media and social media were weaponized against me by Joe Biden’s campaign, one of the people who continued to vocally support me publicly and on social media was Angela Walker, the 2020 vice presidential candidate for the Green Party.

Angela’s steadfast support gave me hope at a very bleak time.

“We all saw this coming; he is not fit to lead this country,” she told me in a phone conversation. “I mean watching him flail around is to be expected. And I would say it to his face.” She sounded disgusted as she sighed her opinion about the current state of the American empire crumbling a bit more with every crisis.

The “he” Angela is talking about is POTUS Joe Biden. “Well, I worked for him and I can tell you he is incompetent and in it for power, the compassion image is bulls**t optics,” I answered.

As we discussed our activist backgrounds Angela spoke about growing up in Wisconsin, and later taking her daughter to anti-war protests. I had also lived in Wisconsin as a child. My mother was an artist and activist, a self-described Marxist, leader in the Committee Against Racism in Madison, Wisconsin and Chicago, Illinois, and a member of the Progressive Labor Party. My father was a very firm capitalist who worked for the Pentagon. This ideological divide in one household led to a divorce for them and a healthy dose of political cognitive dissonance for me.

Like me, Angela has a long activist history and continues to be involved, but now likes being more behind the scenes, helping with community organizing. Angela, who describes herself as an introvert, was a reluctant politician. “Running for office to be an elected official is part of a toolbox but not the only way to fix things.”

She agreed when I said the two-party system was no longer working in the US, but then I said, “I hope you run again,” and Angela’s reply was an emphatic “NO. People keep asking but I will not run. I do not like running for office.”

The Google and Facebook Advertising "Snippet Tax", What's It Really About?

Mish

Australia cracked down on Facebook then relented when Facebook pulled the plug. Let's check in on events in the EU.

Advertising War

Australia and the EU are not happy with US technology companies in general, but in particular Alphabet (GOOG), Facebook (FB), Microsoft (MSFT), and Apple (AAPL).

This discussion regards advertising giants Alphabet and Facebook.

Australia and the EU believe the advertising giants are stealing money from other publishers, especially news print,  and/or are unfairly driving such companies out of business.

Crackdown in Spain

In 2015, Spain decided to tax Google simply for linking to other content.

Google responded appropriately. It told Spain to go to hell and pulled the plug entirely. Rather than pay companies to promote their content, Google pulled out of Spain, and has been out of that market ever since.

Google Tax

TechDirt has an interesting discussion regarding a Study of Spain's 'Google Tax' on News and how much damage the tax did.

Governments across Europe, generally at the behest of traditional newspaper publishers, have been pushing for what they call an "ancillary copyright," but which is much better referred to as a "snippet tax" or a "link tax." Belgium was the first country to try it, and Google responded by removing complaining publications from Google News.

When it came time for Spain to try to appease its misguided and angry publishers, the government sought to avoid the tactics that Google had done in the past and thus made it mandatory to pay, saying that sites themselves couldn't even opt-out of getting payments, even if they didn't want them. In response to this, Google broke out the somewhat surprising "nuclear option" and shut down Google News in Spain entirely.

After the law went into effect, the Spanish Association of Publishers of Periodical Publications (AEEPP) commissioned an economic study about the impact of the new Spanish ancillary copyright law -- and found (not surprisingly) that the legal change (and the shuttering of Google News and other aggregators) was absolutely harmful to the Spanish news media and innovation in general.

Google Threatens to kill Google News in Europe

Undaunted by the dismal results in Spain, the EU nannycrats still want to crack down on Google and Facebook.

The Foxconn Real Estate Show

From Urban Milwaukee:

More than three and a half years after Foxconn signed a memorandum with Gov. Scott Walker promising to turn Racine County into the Silicon Valley of Wisconsin, the company still isn’t manufacturing anything. Other than press releases.

But it continues to put up buildings. As one Foxconn employee told The Verge, in describing the utter failure of the project in Racine County: “When you’re desperate and you have no product to sell and the only asset you have is land, what can you do? You build on it or you grow crops on it.”

So far there have been no crops cultivated by Foxconn, though the company has considered trying fish farming, tree farming and dairy exports — before rejecting those ideas, The Verge reported — with all the land it was handed by Mount Pleasant and Racine County, as The Verge reported. Which leaves only the option of building on the property, to give the impression that something is going on.

The company’s original promise was to create 20 million square feet of manufacturing, prompting former President Donald Trump to dub the project “the eighth wonder of the world.” Alas, it has fallen far short, at about 2% of the promised footprint. But it has created four different buildings that some day may be useful for something. The list includes

Two former Racine County Sheriff's Corrections Officers face charges of theft, misconduct in office and sneaking alcohol and drugs to inmates

From Racine Uncensored:

Two former Racine County Sheriff's Corrections Officers face charges of theft, misconduct in office and sneaking alcohol and drugs to inmates. BOOM.

In what is today the most under the radar scandals so far of 2021, two former correctional officers from the Racine County Jail are facing possible felony convictions for theft, misconduct in office and sneaking alcohol and drugs to inmates.
The first of the two, Brandon Michael Moran of Kenosha, is scheduled to make his initial court appearance in a downtown Racine courtroom on the afternoon of Tuesday, March 9, 2021. As was reported on Racine Uncensored in a May 26, 2020 post ( https://m.facebook.com/groups/1783568838634123/permalink/2719569191700745/ ), Moran is accused of smuggling 'alcohol and drugs' to second shift inmate-workers in Day Room 3e (West). The incidents supposedly took place during late 2019 and into early 2020. His colleagues eventually discovered the contraband during a later shakedown. The former Racine Sheriff's Dept. Correctional Officer is facing 2 counts of Felony I 'Misconduct/Office-Act/Excess Authority' (§946.12(2)) and two counts of Felony I 'Deliver Illegal Articles to Inmate' (§302.095(2)) according to the Wisconsin Circuit Court Access (WCCA).

According to internal sources within the Racine County Jail, officials there had originally found the allegations against Moran unfounded and paid him an entire months back salary. Only after an external investigation was performed were charges brought against him. Fellow COs described him as 'cocky' and 'dismissive of work place policies' while inmates dubbed him as 'moron.' It is unknown when Brandon Moran ceased his unemployment at the Racine Sheriff's Department.

The second of the two former RCJ guards facing criminal charges, Barbara Teeling from Racine County, is also scheduled to appear before a Racine court on the afternoon of Tuesday, March 9, 2021. According to the Wisconsin Circuit Court Access (WCCA), she faces one Felony G count of 'Theft-Business Setting >$10,000-$100,000' (§943.20(1)) and one Felony I count of 'Misconduct/Office-Act/Excess Authority' (§946.20(1)).

Barbara Teeling was employed with the DRC program through the Racine County Jail. DRC stands for 'Day Reporting Center,' most commonly called house-arrest. In this capacity she made home visits and inspections of those in the program. While performing these duties Teeling is accused of collecting fees (and outstanding fees) and issuing unofficial, personal receipts. It is alleged that she pocketed over $10K in this manner. According to an insider at the RCJ, authorities eventually caught on when the Financial Office contacted one of the DRC inmates about their outstanding balance due. Barbara Teeling resigned from employment with the Racine Sheriff's Department during early 2021.

All defendants are innocent until proven guilty.
