Loose horse struck and killed by Amtrak train in Caledonia

A horse was severely injured and later put down after being struck by an Amtrak train July 7 in Racine County, according to the Caledonia Police Department.
Police responded to the area near Prairie Crossing Drive and Racine County H in Caledonia around 6 a.m. after two horses were seen running loose.
Officers attempted to corral the animals while working to keep them off the roadway with the help of the horses' owners, but the horses began to run west along the train tracks near where they were originally seen. Police notified the train companies to request that all trains be stopped until the horses could be safely guided off the track, but a northbound Amtrak train could not stop in time and hit one of the horses.
No passengers on the train were injured. The second horse was not hit and was safely corralled into its enclosure.
A vet from the Sturtevant area was called to the scene and humanely euthanized the horse due to its severe injuries.

Caledonia woman reported missing has been found dead, police say

Police early Wednesday, March 25 issued a missing endangered person alert for Kari Nelson. Authorities cancelled the alert about 9:20 a.m., saying Nelson's body had been found.
Nelson was last seen about 6:30 p.m. March 24 leaving her house to pick up medication from a Meijer in Oak Creek. She never returned home.
Police found her car around 10 p.m. that night in Bender Park. Her cellphone was inside the vehicle, the alert said.
Police issue missing endangered alerts when a missing person does not meet critera for certain missing alerts, like an Amber Alert, a Silver Alert or a critical missing alert, according to the Wisconsin Department of Justice.

Racine man sentenced to prison on 2025 child pornography charges

RACINE — A 24-year-old Racine man was sentenced to six years in prison Tuesday in connection to 20 counts of possession of child pornography.
Christopher Dufay pleaded guilty in December 2025 to five of the counts. The remaining 15 were dismissed but read in to the court record.
Dufay also was ordered to serve five years of extended supervision.
Allegations
According to previous Journal Times reporting, Dufay was arrested in April 2025 after the Caledonia Police Department received a cyber tip from Internet Crimes Against Children.
The tip included eight videos and a Kik account with an IP address associated with a residence in the 2700 block of Holly Grove Court and an account name of Christopher Dufay.
CPD served a search warrant for the account, which showed 209 images/videos had been downloaded or shared by the account owner. CPD reportedly found 20 distinct videos containing child pornography.
Investigators also searched Dufay’s residence and seized several items as evidence, according to previous reporting.
Dufay originally pleaded not guilty to all charges during an arraignment in April 2025.

Caledonia man changes plea in April child pornography case

RACINE — A Caledonia man pleaded guilty to possessing child pornography Tuesday.
Christopher Dufay, 24, was facing 20 counts of possession of child pornography.
Each count is a class D felony which, upon conviction, can result in up to 25 years in prison, a maximum fine of $100,000 or both.
On Tuesday, Dufay pleaded guilty to five counts. The remaining counts were dismissed but read in to the court record.

The tip included eight videos and a Kik account with an IP address associated with a residence in the 2700 block of Holly Grove Court and an account name of Christopher Dufay.

Drone technology helping MPPD operate faster, safer

MOUNT PLEASANT — The Mount Pleasant Police Department has upgraded its drone program to facilitate speed and efficiency within the department.
In late 2024, Spectrum and local law enforcement agencies discussed the benefits of drones, including quickly and efficiently conducting search and rescue, locating missing persons, photographing and mapping crime scenes, providing situational awareness during special events and aiding in the apprehension of subjects.
Spectrum donated $11,600 to the department earlier this year for the purchase a drone for outdoor use.
The new drone, which replaced a first-generation model, features a wide-angle and zoom camera, as well as infrared and thermal imaging.
During a demonstration Oct. 29, Chief Robert Botsch cited the drone’s maximum speed of 51 mph.
“In public safety, seconds matter,” Botsch said. “Drones provide officers the ability to get immediate eyes on a problem or concern and provide instant feedback to the officers.”
The department also has two indoor drones, which were purchased over the summer.
The drones are used during special events, for locating a missing person and for clearing buildings prior to officers entering.
During the demonstration, the outdoor drone was able to find an actor in a nearby field using thermal imaging despite the person blending in with the tall grass.
An officer at the police department was able to see the image from the drone and communicate with an officer and K9 about the actor’s location.
A handful of MPPD officers are certified by the Federal Aviation Administration to operate the outdoor drone and others are being trained. The department hopes to to have a dozen officers who are FAA certified.
The Racine County Sheriff’s Office and Caledonia Police Department also have the same model of outdoor drone, so the agencies can work together.
“When yours comes down, if you have a partnership with somebody else, theirs goes up and you overlap,” Botsch said. “We recently worked with Caledonia on that where I knew ours had to come down so Caledonia put theirs up about two minutes before ours came down, and we never lost coverage.”
Drones for interior use are much smaller, lighter and do not require FAA certification, so more officers will be trained to operate them.
Drones are an extension of the police, meaning officers still need consent or a search warrant to send a drone into a home, Botsch said.
“Using drones to enter uncleared, high-risk areas helps identify concealed threats in advance of police K9s and officers entering the room, minimizing risk,” Botsch said. “Bottom line: we can cover more ground from the air than we can with an officer on foot or in a car. This technology helps us to be faster, smarter and safer, which ultimately makes us better.”

FBI multi-year drug investigation in Milwaukee and Racine leads to 22 arrests, drugs confiscated

The FBI announced Oct. 22 that a multi-year investigation has led to the arrest of 22 people it says are connected to an international drug cartel operating in Milwaukee and Racine.
According to a news release from the FBI's Milwaukee office, an investigation named "Operation Chalkline" resulted in the seizure of more than 260 grams of fentanyl, 4 kilograms of cocaine, 1.5 pounds of methamphetamines, 6 pounds of marijuana, 23 firearms and three vehicles.
The investigation was led by a Mount Pleasant Police Department officer as part of the FBI Milwaukee Area Safe Streets Task Force. The task force includes officers from the Mount Pleasant, Caledonia and Racine police departments, and the Racine County Sheriff's Office, according to the news release.
Other local, state and federal law enforcement assisted in the operation, which included 14 SWAT teams, according to the FBI.
The 22 suspects were arrested on federal charges, according to the FBI. The FBI did not specify when the arrests were made, or the names and specific charges.

21-year-old charged with 37 counts of possessing child pornography

RACINE — A West Allis man has been charged with possession of child pornography following an investigation by the Caledonia Police Department.
Marvon Lynch, 21, is facing 37 counts of possession of child pornography and one count of resisting or obstructing an officer.
If convicted, Lynch could be sentenced to 25 years in prison, fined of up to $100,000 for each count of possession of child pornography, or both. Additionally, the court may impose a surcharge of $500 for each image or copy of an image, according to the criminal complaint.
Lynch faces an additional nine months in prison, a fine of up to $10,000, or both, if convicted of obstructing an officer.
On Wednesday, his cash bond was set at $150,000, according to court records.
According to a criminal complaint, about 12:25 a.m. Aug. 13, a CPD officer reportedly saw a vehicle parked in the Cliffside Park parking lot, 7320 Michna Road, which had closed at 11 p.m.
The officer reported seeing Lynch in the backseat with a passenger, who later was confirmed to be 12 years old, the complaint said. The passenger reportedly told police that she believed Lynch was 16.
CPD searched Lynch's phone after learning that the 12-year-old might have sent "provocative photos" to him, according to the criminal complaint.
Police reportedly found about 60 images of child pornography on Lynch's phone.
Lynch is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing at 8:30 a.m. Sept. 10 in Racine County Circuit Court.

23-year-old charged with possessing child porn

CALEDONIA — A 23-year-old Caledonia man was charged with seven counts of possessing child pornography after Caledonia Police received a cyber tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
The maximum sentence if convicted is a fine of up to $100,000, imprisonment of up to 25 years or both. Further, the court can impose a surcharge of $500 for each image or copy of an image associated with the crime.
Online records reflect that Marcos Donoso’s cash bond was set at $25,000 during a court hearing Thursday. He is scheduled to appear in court June 26.
According to a criminal complaint, CPD began investigating May 5 and identified Donoso as a suspect.
CPD investigators obtained a warrant for Donoso’s Dropbox account and reportedly found images and videos, including those detailed in the cyber tip.
The complaint alleges that Donoso told CPD he owned the account and possessed and viewed child pornography.

DuFay’s residence also was searched and investigators seized several items as evidence, the complaint said.

Caledonia boy inspired by Menendez brothers fatally stabs mother, complaint says

A 15-year-old Racine County boy says he was inspired by California's Menendez brothers when he stabbed his mother to death earlier this week, according to prosecutors.
Reed R. Gelinskey was charged Thursday with first-degree intentional homicide by the Racine County District Attorney's Office.
As police arrived at the Caledonia home in 10000 block of White Manor Court at about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, Gelinskey dropped a knife in front of officers and admitted to killing his mother while asking officers to kill him, according to prosecutors.
Gelinskey's mother is only identified with the initials SG in the complaint.
Gelinskey told a detective during his interview that he came home from school and felt depression and an urge to kill his parents, the complaint says. Gelinskey said he had been taking his brother's anxiety medication for about a month and during the night of the murder he took about nine pills, according to the complaint. The teen said the pills didn't help with anxiety but made him feel high and he enjoys that.
According to the complaint, Gelinskey said he searched the home for a hammer because he was going to kill his father when he came home from work but could not find one large enough. Gelinskey said after dinner, his mother was seated on the couch using her computer and so he started watching a movie.
Gelinskey said he turned on a Netflix documentary about Lyle and Erik Menendez, famed brothers who were convicted of killing their parents at their Beverly Hills home in 1989. Gelinskey said this is when he developed the plan to kill his parents and he said it came to him during the "shotgun scene," which graphically depicts the killing of José and Mary Louise "Kitty" Menendez.
Gelinskey's mother went upstairs at about 9:50 p.m. and that is when he got up to hide his sleeping medication, according to the complaint. He said after hiding the medication he grabbed a steak knife and put it in his pocket before telling his mother that he couldn't find his medicine.
Gelinskey said he hid a dumbbell bar in the sleeve of his sweatshirt while his mother came down to look for the pills. As his mother's back was turned, Gelinskey hit her twice in the head with the dumbbell, the complaint says. Gelinskey said he thought she would fall over but she did not so he threw her to the ground and grabbed the knife. According to the complaint, Gelinskey said his mother tried to kick him off her several times but eventually he stabbed her three times in the chest and twice in the neck.
Gelinskey said his mother asked him, "Why?" and he replied, "Pain," the complaint says.
After the attack, Gelinskey said he contacted his friend via Snapchat and told her to call the police. He said he sat on the floor until he heard sirens and once those stopped, he went outside to investigate where he was met by police.
"She is dead," Gelinskey said to officers, according to the complaint. "She is dead from what I did," he added.
Gelinskey appeared in court Thursday where bail was set at $1 million. If convicted, he faces a mandatory life sentence.
Teen charged with first-degree homicide in death of mother

CALEDONIA — A 15-year-old boy has been charged with first-degree intentional homicide after police found his mother stabbed to death in their Caledonia home about 10:30 p.m. March 4.
If convicted, Reed Gelinskey faces life in prison.
According to state statute, a case involving any child who is 10 or older and accused of first-degree intentional homicide is automatically assigned to adult court.
Gelinskey had an initial appearance via Zoom at the Racine County Courthouse on Thursday. His cash bail was set at $1,000,000 and his next hearing is scheduled for Friday.
Allegations
According to a criminal complaint, Caledonia police were sent to the 10000 block of White Manor Court after a report that a juvenile had stabbed his mother to death in their home.
The complaint said that when police arrived, Gelinskey dropped a kitchen knife while standing on the front stoop. His clothes appeared to have blood on them.
According to the original news release from the Caledonia Police Department, he surrendered without incident.
The complaint said that Gelinskey reportedly asked the police to kill him and stated that "she is dead from what I did."
Police found his mother lying face-up in the foyer and, according to the complaint, she had sustained "apparent stab wounds," and her clothes were soaked with blood.
Responders attempted life-saving measures, but she "could not be revived," the complaint said.
During an interview at CPD, Gelinskey reportedly told police that after arriving home from school he felt depressed and had an urge to kill his parents.
According to the complaint, Gelinskey told police that the plan to kill his parents came to him while he was watching "The Menendez Brothers" documentary.
Lyle and Erik Menendez were convicted in the 1989 murder of their parents.
According to the complaint, Gelinskey told police that he struck his mother twice in the head with a dumbbell and stabbed her three times in the chest and twice in the neck after she came downstairs to help him find his sleep medication.
Gelinskey reportedly contacted a friend via a messaging app, asking her to call the police and including a photo of his mother on the floor.

Caledonia woman found dead, 15-year-old son in custody, police say

CALEDONIA — A 15-year-old boy is in custody after police reportedly found his mother dead inside their Caledonia home Tuesday.
Police were dispatched to a residence in the 10000 block of E. White Manor Court about 10:34 p.m. after receiving a report of a juvenile possibly killing his mother, according to a news release from the Caledonia Police Department.
When officers arrived at the home, the boy reportedly was walking out the front door and surrendered without incident.
Inside the home, officers found a deceased woman, who was identified as the teen's mother.
According to CPD, the preliminary investigation indicates that the woman was stabbed and sustained blunt force trauma.
The teenager was arrested for homicide and was in custody as of Wednesday morning, the release said.
An investigation is ongoing.
