Still having problems

kk, Orbs, et al, I am still having computer problems...for some reason, it is associated with my MSN account. I want my old screen back....boo-hoo. Anyway, I restored to a day last week and it is at least up...I have run every diagnostic tool I can find on this damn thing. I think, perhaps, it has to do with an update I ran last week or prevent some sort of virus. No viruses have been found.

I am so frustrated.

One question I have is that if the update reinstalls AOL could that conflict with my MSN stuff? And also, should I just remove Comcast and put it back in? Any other suggestions, short of tossing it in the pool, would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Sounds a lot like the issue I was having with one of the windows updates and the program Zone Alarm I was running.

After several restores to a previous date, I wound up going into windows update and told it to not install that update. At least that allowed me to connect.

It made me kind of anxious to think that I was open to some other type of attack.. so, I dumped zone alarm.. boo! I miss it, it was an excellent program. I turned on windows firewall and let Bill Gates win that battle.

Do you know what update is causing this problem? If so, google it. You are probably not the only one affected. There might be a patch to remedy it or something you can at least do in the meantime.

Well, it was whatever patch they send out last year in response to some virus thingy. Must have been Friday or Saturday. I see that there were updates both days. I restored to the 25th and at leasts can connect now.

It's very difficult to diagnose problems long distance. When I screw up, though, I screw up big time - System Restore never works for me. It's been two weeks since my big computer crash and I'm still installing, uninstalling, and reinstalling things. It's not right yet.

As far as I'm concerned, AOL is a virus, too.

It might be time for professional help, Beejay, or if you know someone else who is handy with computers. The Geek Squad was affiliated with Best Buy the last I heard, but I don't know what they charge. You can ship the computer to me, but that would probably take more time and money than it is worth. Or fly me down to Florida. :D

Well, I sort of thought I would unplug the darn thing and take it over to one of our local geeky guys. It is a laptop ....hp pavilion. Very portable. If I were up there, Orbs, I would be tossing it to you.

I sort of think kk has it though. This occurred coincident with an upgrade from windows. When I look out in cyberspace, I see people are having a lot of problems. What I found was an update that went out on the 27th and that I installed just prior to the CRASH dates.

Can you uninstall MSN and AOL? Them reboot the computer. Run every diagnostic and clean up utility that you have. reboot again. Then reinstall MSN.

Again, I've been spending hours and hours uninstalling and reinstalling stuff on my machine. What a pain in the dookas.

Ignore my previous post if you think you're onto something with the update thing. Explore that first.

I did a search for January 27th windows update and found this:

Does any of this look like what you are seeing, beejay?

Very, very close...my says 'msn has stopped working.' But I think this is probably what is happening. Nosey rosies always want to know what is happening and they cause the problem. I think I will try this later tonight...

Thanks, kk. I owe you an apple/carmel cheesecake or any other flavor of your choice. Want a key lime one?

Having problems with MSN? That's odd. That's been my homepage for years. Haven't had any problems with it.I don't use AOL though. So,there maybe a connection there. I'm not a computer tech geek,so don't quote me on anything.

Drew, do you do the feedback thingy? (aw, I'm so technical?)

I think kk may have found the answer for me. Seems a few years back, I deleted this ability when I had other problems. I also know that if you have both AOL and MSN, they clash...so competitive they are!

It is too bad that the computer gods can't agree and play nice. They make it so much harder on us non-technical girls who "just wanna have fun."

I LOVE your key lime pie, beejay. I've been so bad... pizza and very tasty cake with frozen cool whip yesterday! I tried walking it off today, but I'm sure I didn't burn enough calories!

Feedback thingy? Not sure.

I want a Key Lime Cheesecake! :) droooolllll

Beejay, are you sure you don't have a Trojan Horse virus? I picked one up not long ago, prevented me from going to CBSnews.com and a few other sites, shut down my computer at random times, basically a pain in the butt.

Dave ran some new malware and spyware and got it.

DA, I have run everything I have, but maybe I should just rerun. I can't get the original MSN configuration to say I'm DSL, Cable, et al. Keeps telling me I'm dial up. How dare it! Of all the nerve; I'm no cheap little dial-up harlot!

I have it narrowed down to 'messenger.' It keeps telling me I have dial-up and won't let me change it. I'll going on another search and rescue in cyberspace.
