Skip The Handshake

Yep, there is a movement afoot to skip handshakes to stop the spread of swine flu. What good is a movement without a colored wristband you can wear to show people how you feel?

The good news is that you can now buy a wristband to show people you want to skip the handshakes. We might as well just buy one that says you are filthy and I don't even trust touching your hand. I wonder what would happen if you wore one on a date? Maybe a bad idea.

I think we should fight back with the Don't Worry, I Actually Wash my Hands wristband.

Anything to make a buck. People are nuts, they will buy them. Germs are everywhere.

Germs can actually be a good thing. They test and strengthen your immunity to more dangerous viruses. If you don't pick up a few, your immune system can't fight a bad one when you do encounter it.

Pandemic panic. Much like the elevated security levels, crying wolf is dulling down our ability to know when we really need to worry.

What do you do when your 40 yr old female boss wants to 'high five' you and you are (in my case) 70 yrs old. TO ME that is the stupidest thing but to have to do it at work is totally dumb.

KK you have that right, Anything for buck.

Money and doorknobs are two of the worst things to handle every day.

I would think those would be a germ trap.....

Now that's a good observation DA! I don't see any indication of antibacterial coating on the wristbands.

Ser, don't forget computer keyboards (wonder if this will be the last response as everyone quits typing!)

Finally, kk, we NEED bacteria. We literally could not live without them. It is widely accepted that there are 10 times as many cells of bacteria in our bodies and there are cells that actually belong to our body. Many of these bacteria are harmless, some help our bodies perform vital functions such as digestion, and some we have no idea why they are there.

Yep hale. Women learn all about friendly bacteria after they take an antibiotic and the usually benign yeast bacteria then have a field day with nothing else to keep them in check.

Also, working with children, the first year or two you are constantly sick. However, it serves to strengthen the immune system as you build immunities. You then find you get "a touch" of things but not usually the full blown sickness.

Hale, they're just there for the party.

kk,thank you for saying what I have been telling folks for years. People have become too germ-phobic. All this anti-bacterial stuff goes overboard. Yes, wash your hands with soap! That will do the trick. But so many folks (my mother in law for one) doesn't understand that there is GOOD bacteria! Duh.

Washing your hands will do what you need.

SER, you forgot the toilet handle...that doorknobs, faucet handles and money.

We'll all go nuts if we try to sterilize everything around us!!!

If everyone wants to send me their money, I will do my best to sanitize it.
:D

Good one, DA.

I think our society has become anal because of advertising that promotes antiseptic products. Air fresheners are now also expected to "kill germs." I agree that common sense with sanitation should prevail. Our health advances are dependent upon clean water, fresh food, etc. But I don't sit around worrying if there are germs in my bathroom. I know there are.

I cannot stand when I read about mothers who will not let their children play out on public equipment, or use public toilets. They may not touch anything or anyone or do anything.. It's so strange that they are afraid of something that has been around much longer than we have. That without it we would not survive.

My friends mother was just appalled that I let my 7 month old daughter sit in the grass.

Antibacterial soaps are not allowed in my home. I believe they do more damage than good. I do however clean out my daughters potty with a disinfectant after she leaves a present in there for me, only because the youngest daughter loves making a break for it and play with it.. kinda gross.

As others are saying a good old fashioned hand washing with (regular) soap and water. We sing our ABCs a couple of times and then rinse them off.. I think my daughter thinks its fun to sit and wash her hands and sing at the same time.
