When Kamala Harris dropped out two weeks ago, it hit Cory Booker hard.
She may have been his rival in the race for the Democratic nomination, but her exit represented something bigger. If Harris — a friend of Booker’s and the only black woman in the race, who began her campaign with such promise — couldn’t make it to Iowa, what did it mean for him, a black man still in the fight but unable to qualify for the Democratic debate?
At
the heart of Booker’s dilemma is a larger question about the
Democratic Party and American politics: What if Barack Obama was not
just the first, but the only person who is not a white man to occupy
the White House for decades to come?
“That’s
a very real fear,” said Bakari Sellers, a prominent South Carolina
Democrat who supported Harris’ bid. It feels like the country has
taken a giant step backwards, he said. “It’s hard to answer the
question of, how did you go from Barack Obama to Donald Trump?”
Harris’
downfall, Booker’s struggles and Julián Castro’s single-digit
polling have caused Democrats across the party, and especially people
of color, to ask what’s led the party to this juncture, where all
the frontrunners are white, and most of them are male and in their
70s. In July, Democrats had the most diverse debate stage in history.
Five months later, all the participants are white except for Andrew
Yang, who cleared the bar by a single percentage point in one poll on
the final day to qualify.

Documents show US leaders misled public on progress in Afghanistan War: report

Senior U.S. officials knowingly concealed evidence showing a lack of progress throughout the 18-year war in Afghanistan, according to a cache of documents obtained by the Washington Post.
The interviews, obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request, span the Bush, Obama and Trump administrations and reveal U.S. officials frequently acknowledged the nation was wasting vast amounts of money attempting to transform and Westernize the nation.
“After the killing of Osama bin Laden, I said that Osama was probably laughing in his watery grave considering how much we have spent on Afghanistan,” retired Navy SEAL Jeffrey Eggers, a White House staffer in the Bush and Obama administrations, said in a private interview.
Interviewees also describe a deliberate disinformation campaign meant to spin discouraging statistics as evidence the U.S. was prevailing in the war.
“Every data point was altered to present the best picture possible,” Bob Crowley, an Army colonel and senior counterinsurgency adviser to U.S. military commanders in 2013 and 2014, said in an interview.
“Surveys, for instance, were totally unreliable but reinforced that everything we were doing was right and we became a self-licking ice cream cone,” he added.
In 2015, Ret. Lt. Gen. Douglas Lute, who served as a top advisor on the war during the Bush and Obama administrations, told government interviewers “We were devoid of a fundamental understanding of Afghanistan — we didn’t know what we were doing,” according to the Post.
Lute went on to lament the deaths of U.S. military personnel that he blamed on bureaucratic entanglements between the State Department, the Pentagon and Congress.
John Sopko, head of the Office of the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR), which conducted the interviews, told the newspaper the documents demonstrate “the American people have constantly been lied to” on Afghanistan.
SIGAR conducted more than 600 interviews for a 2014 initiative called “Lessons Learned,” meant to avoid the mistakes of the Afghanistan war for future U.S. military campaigns. These included Americans, NATO allies and Afghanistan officials.
SIGAR has made several of its reports public, but those lacked the blunt language and grim assessments found in the new interviews. For example, one 2018 report simply said the U.S. strategy was “not properly tailored to the Afghan context, and successes in stabilizing Afghan districts rarely lasted longer than the physical presence of coalition troops and civilians.”
The newspaper obtained more than 2,000 pages of unpublished notes and more than 400 interview transcripts after suing SIGAR for them twice. Numerous names are redacted, and the Post has sued for the names to be revealed. While a decision is still pending, the newspaper wrote that it chose to publish them now amid U.S./Taliban negotiations.
“We didn’t sit on it,” Sopko told the Post. “We’re firm believers in openness and transparency, but we’ve got to follow the law. . . . I think of any inspector general, I’ve probably been the most forthcoming on information.”
The Hill has reached out to the Pentagon for comment.

"Puerto Rico Defaults On $2 Billion In Debt Payments"

"As expected, Puerto Rico will default on about $2 billion in debt payments Friday, including $780 million in constitutionally-backed general obligation bonds, as governor Alejandro Garcia Padilla has issued an executive order authorizing the suspension of payments. In addition, Garcia Padilla also declared states of emergency at the island's biggest public pension - the Commonwealth's Employee Retirement System - which is more than 99% underfunded, as well as the University of Puerto Rico and other agencies Reuters reports. The default will mark the first time a US territory has failed to pay on its general obligation bonds.
"'Under these circumstances, these executive orders protect the limited resources available to the agencies listed in these orders and prevents that these can be seized by creditors, leaving Puerto Ricans without basic services,' Garcia Padilla's administration said in a statement.
"The suspension of payments comes just as the Senate rushed a bill to President Obama that was signed on Thursday, and the bill will now allow Puerto Rico to access a bankruptcy-like debt restructuring process for its roughly $70 billion in debt. As Bloomberg explains, the next phase will now be for the US appointed control board to begin the restructuring negotiation process. The step allows Garcia Padilla to use cash that would otherwise go to investors to avert cuts to schools, policing and health care that Garcia Padilla said would extract a heavy toll on the island where nearly half of the 3.5 million residents live in poverty."

"As California's End of Life act goes into effect, some doctors question where to draw the line"

"As a new law goes into effect in California allowing terminally ill patients to take medicines to kill themselves, physicians are contemplating whether they would ever write a prescription for death.
"For Dr. Neil Wenger, an internal medicine doctor and director of the UCLA Health Ethics Center, physician-assisted dying blurs what had once been a clear distinction for physicians.
"'We have always, up till now, been able to say we will never hasten a death,' Wenger said. 'Suddenly, that bright line is not so bright.'
"He added that the Hippocratic Oath doesn’t just say that doctors shouldn’t harm patients but specifically forbids providing poison to kill someone.
"Wenger’s stance is common among doctors in California: He accepts that physician-aided death is now legal -- in fact, he’s in charge of implementing the new law at UCLA -- but remains unlikely to participate himself, saying it goes against his oath to save lives.
"Though both advocates and opponents of doctor-aided death call California’s legalization a big step -- either forward or backward – for medical care, experts predict that it would probably be a marginalized practice within the healthcare system, with few patients asking for lethal medications and few doctors furnishing them.
"'For most of us this may be a once or twice in a lifetime, or in a career, situation,' said Dr. Jay Lee, head of the California Academy of Family Physicians.
"When the End of Life Option Act goes into effect Thursday, California will become the fifth state in the nation to allow patients with less than six months to live to request end-of-life drugs from their doctors.
"The law is intended to help terminally ill patients avoid suffering. When he signed the bill into law in October, Gov. Jerry Brown wrote that he believed it would be a comfort to have this option if he were 'dying in prolonged and excruciating pain.'
"More than three-fourths of Californians were in favor of such a law, including 82% of Democrats and 67% of Republicans, according to a poll conducted last year by the Institute of Governmental Studies at UC Berkeley.
"But doctors tend to be more wary. Neither the American Medical Assn. nor the California Medical Assn. support such legislation.
"Physicians have no obligations under California’s law; they don’t have to prescribe such medications if asked or refer patients to colleagues who will. They don’t even have to discuss aid-in-dying if a patient approaches them about it.
"But leaders of physicians groups say they want doctors to be able to talk about the treatment so they can properly address patients’ concerns and questions.
"For the last several months, these organizations have been holding webinars and training sessions and providing educational materials about the law. The California Academy of Family Physicians launched a podcast in April about end-of-life care options.
"Lee said they want doctors to be better at talking about all treatment options around death, as well as physician-aided death specifically.
"'Not everyone feels entirely comfortable yet, because it’s been, kind of, in the medical community, a taboo topic,' Lee said.
"Some doctors object to the idea that a patient’s pain could be so great that they would choose to die. It’s unlikely for pain to not be controlled with palliative care or other treatments, they say.
"Wenger said that sometimes a patient feels so much pain that they need to be sedated to a point of unresponsiveness. But he’s only seen one or two patients like that in his more than 20-year career, he said.
"In Oregon, only 25% of those who died from lethal medication said they were worried about pain control, according to data from the state’s public health department.
"More common reasons for choosing aid-in-dying were loss of autonomy (92%), being less able to engage in activities that made life enjoyable (90%) and burdening family or caregivers (41%)."

My concern about any so-called ‘...comprehensive solution
to the opioid epidemic’is with the bureaucrats who lump seniors who
deal with 24/7 pain together with drug addicts. That broad brush
approach may be simple for bureaucrats to implement but it causes
massive problems for patients and doctors. Doctors now fear the loss of
their license if they prescribe even nominal opioid amounts to the
elderly to control 24/7 pain when nothing else has proven to work. I am
not talking about one-off pain med needs. I am talking about pain
management for degenerative diseases where it has been proven that
nothing else works. Many elderly tried PT, exercise, Chinese herbs,

Those responsible for helping you, i.e., doctors, throw their hands up in the air and claim there is nothing they can do to help. In other words, maybe the elderly should just go into some corner somewhere and die. Please, don’t tell me I am over simplifying anything here. I’m just speaking facts.
Don't let the pendulum swing too far yet again but this time in the opposite direction. We let it swing too far on the use of opioids. Some patients and some doctors abused it. We now know through that experience that it not only did not work, it caused this epidemic, increased addictions and deaths. But, let’s also analyze the data to prove who died. Were the deaths among elderly who were under doctor care? Were the deaths among kids trying to get a high? Were they among known addicts? The news media carefully avoids any data to prove which age groups are most affected. Why is that when we know -- or should know -- data are critical to reaching intelligent decisions?

First we have to understand that the vast majority of overdoses are the result of use of heroin, methadone, and the illegal use of prescription opioids. The number of deaths from the legal use of prescription opioids under the care of a legitimate doctor - as opposed to the pill mills - is relatively uncommon.
Unfortunately, much of the news coverage lumps the legal use of prescription opioids in with non legal use and illegal opioids giving an entirely false impression of the problem. As a result, and given the changes in regulations, being in pain has effectively become criminalized and Doctors are now forced to act as parole officers.
The real problem is actually concentrated in the broader use of illegal drugs. In other words it is not medical problem but an illegal drug and crime problem.

Let’s learn from MAJOR errors of our past that were based on ignorance and no small amount of marketing by pharmaceutical firms. Let’s be smart this time, let’s be selective, let’s be definitive, let’s use data and be intelligent about any laws that deal with pain management for the elderly. Also, let’s focus on the underlying causes of addiction and put programs in place to address the causes.
Pain management does not warrant broad brush solutions or ignorant assumptions. The link below cites the personal encounter with chronic pain by Philip Pizzo, postgraduate medical student, that dramatically changed his limited view of chronic pain. As he puts it: “Previously, I had sometimes wondered whether the chronic pain that patients reported was as incapacitating as they claimed. I now know that it can become debilitating. The elderly in chronic pain are not intent on getting high. They need and seek effective pain management that allows them to live their lives in comfort, to remain productive members of society, and to enjoy their family and friends. No bureaucrat or legislator should allow any bill to lump the elderly together with addicts or kids seeking a high in search of a ‘...comprehensive solution to the opioid epidemic.’

"Guns at GOP convention petition nears 35K, Trump wants to study 'fine print'"

"Donald Trump says he wants to study a petition that calls for allowing the open carry of guns at the Republican convention this July in Cleveland.
"While proclaiming himself "' very, very strong person for Second Amendment,' the Republican front-runner told ABC's This Week that 'I have not seen the petition. I want to see what it says. I want to read the fine print.'
"Posted on the website change.org, the petition of unknown origin notes that 'though Ohio is an open carry state, which allows for the open carry of guns, the hosting venue -- the Quicken Loans Arena -- strictly forbids the carry of firearms on their premises.'
"That 'is a direct affront to the Second Amendment and puts all attendees at risk,' said the petition that has more than 34,000 signers.
"The other Republican presidential candidates -- Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and Ohio Gov. John Kasich -- have not commented on the open carry petition.
"The name of the group purportedly behind the effort — Americans for Responsible Open Carry — does not appear anywhere else online and accepts online message only from networked supporters, the Akron Beacon Journal reported.
"The Ohio Republican Party said it was not aware of the petition, the Journal reported, nor was the host committee overseeing the convention, although it noted that the Secret Service, in conjunction with Cleveland, Cuyahoga County and state and federal authorities, is handling security for the event.
"'They are coordinating and will be continuously refining security plans leading up to the national convention,' said Alee Lockman, a spokesperson for the Republican National Convention, the Journal says.
"In 2012, firearms were banned by the Secret Service at the Republican convention in Tampa.

"Cheating website subscribers included WH, Congress workers"

Others came from House or Senate computer networks.
"The AP is not naming the government subscribers it found because they are not elected officials or accused of a crime.

"SC police stations act as havens for online buyers, sellers"
"Some law enforcement agencies in South Carolina are offering up their parking lots as a well-lit, secure place to finalize deals made on Craigslist and other online marketplaces.
"Officers say they won't get involved in
the deals themselves, staying out of the individual transactions. But officials say they hope that, by doing the buying and selling at a police station or sheriff's department, people will be less likely to cut a shady deal — or get violent.
"At least two people have been killed in South Carolina in recent years when online transactions went wrong in real life. In 2013, two men were charged with murder and kidnapping after authorities said they shot to death a Charleston man they met because he was selling his pickup truck on Craigslist.
"Authorities said 25-year-old William Apps met the two men in downtown Charleston and drove them to Mount Pleasant, where Apps was taken out of the truck at gunpoint. He was later forced back into the truck and driven around before one of the men shot Apps in the neck and left his body in a wooded area, according to court documents."

I think this is a good idea. I don;t rememer if we've had any murders in Raine because of Craigslist scams, but I've read of some crimes here where people lost cars, cash, etc.

Is it ever proper to mock another person's religion? Like most Americans, I believe, I was happy that they got the gunmen without anyone else being hurt. I support free speech so screw your Muhammad. But then I thought, "What's the benefit of mocking another person's religion?" Islam simply does not allow for the representation of the Prophet Muhammad in any form. So what? Jews celebrate the Sabbath on Saturday, but no one seems to mind. I don't have a burning desire to draw Muhammad. The only reason to do it is to incite others. Which is what happened. However, nearly everyone in Texas carries a gun, so it was a pretty stupid idea Stupidity on both sides.

Hell, in my old neighborhood, everyone knew that. I'd be surprised if more than 10% of the drivers were licensed.
Here, they're licensed, but none of them can see or hear, including me.
