Man fatally shot in Racine, vigil honors his life

RACINE, Wis. - Members of the community gathered Sunday, March 6 to remember a life lost to gun violence in Racine.

Demond Hicks, 36, was shot near 16th and Cleveland early on Saturday, Feb. 26.

Officers were dispatched to the neighborhood around 3:45 a.m. and found Hicks laying in the middle of the street with multiple gunshot wounds. He later died at the hospital.

Racine police investigators are interested in any additional information that anyone may have about this incident. Any witnesses or citizens with information are urged to call the Racine Police Department Investigations Unit at 262-635-7756.

Darrell Brooks arrest: Ring camera captures moments before police arrive

WAUKESHA, Wis. - A Ring doorbell camera at a Waukesha residence captured the moments leading up to the arrest Darrell Brooks, the man suspected in the Waukesha Christmas Parade tragedy.

The video from resident Daniel Rider shows Brooks knocking on Rider's door – and the later, police arriving to take Brooks into custody.

Brooks is expected to face five charges of first-degree intentional homicide for the five deaths associated with the Christmas parade. Many other counts are expected as nearly 50 people were hurt when an SUV barreled through the crowds watching the parade on Sunday, Nov. 21

The incident

On Sunday, a joyous scene of marching bands and children dancing in Santa hats and waving pompoms gave way in an instant to screams and the sight of crumpled bodies as the SUV sped through barricades and struck dancers, musicians and others in the community of 72,000.

Police identified those killed as Virginia Sorenson, 79; LeAnna Owen, 71; Tamara Durand, 52; Jane Kulich, 52; and Wilhelm Hospel, 81. Sorenson, Owen and Durand were members the Dancing Grannies club, and Hospel helped out with the group.

Another 48 others, including nearly 20 children, were injured in the incident. FOX6 News is monitoring for updates on their conditions. 

Interfaith vigil

An interfaith prayer vigil following Sunday’s tragedy during the annual Waukesha Christmas Parade was held at Cutler Park in Waukesha on Monday evening, Nov. 22. Hundreds of community members joined together on a frigid night, finding comfort in one another with a difficult journey ahead.

"Yesterday’s tragic event demonstrated the character of this community," said Waukesha Police Chief Dan Thompson. "When tragedy struck this great city, the community responded."

"It says that we are a community," said Mushir Hassan, Brookfield-Elm Grove Interfaith Network. "We are one community, and we are going to heal together. We grieve together right now, and we will heal together moving forward."

Waukesha is looking for strength and resilience as a long road ahead begins.

The Waukesha County Community Foundation and United Way of Greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County have joined together to create the "United for Waukesha Community Fund." The fund will support the needs of the families impacted from the tragic incident at the annual Waukesha Christmas Parade.

Vigil for Racine teen killed walking home from football game

RACINE, Wis. - Community members gathered on Wednesday, Sept. 8 – in memory of a Racine teen who was shot and killed last week.

Just two days before his homicide, Jayden Cronin started his senior year of high school at Turning Point Academy. On Friday, Sept. 3, he was walking home from an area football game when his life was abruptly taken.

In the very spot where Cronin was shot, loved ones – and even strangers – stood together in prayer Wednesday.

"We need to stop the violence," said Tamerin Hayward, co-president of the Racine Interfaith Coalition (RIC).

Racine police said the 17-year-old was fatally shot near North Memorial Drive and Woodrow Avenue around 9:15 p.m. Friday. 

"Jayden was walking home from a Horlick (High School) ball game. He lives right in this neighborhood. He was on his way home and someone killed him," Hayward said.

Vigil for Jayden Cronin

Officers responded to reports of shots fired when they found Cronin on the sidewalk, with a gunshot wound. He was taken to the hospital but died from his injuries.

"Until we find out who, we won’t know why," said Hayward.

Cronin's mother, Monika, was too broken up to speak on camera Wednesday and asked for prayers. She said her son was a "sweetheart and was loved by everyone" and "will truly be missed." He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, loved cooking, shopping and taking vacations.

"This is a life wasted. Everything he ever had the potential to be stopped on that day," said Racine Police Chief Maurice Robinson.

The vigil, organized by the Racine Interfaith Coalition, drew dozens of community members, faith leaders and the Racine police chief to mourn the young life lost – and to call for an end to gun violence.

"The parents, the teachers, the friends, the uncles, the cousins, the fathers have to be involved and help these people – the young people – understand there’s more than what you see right now," said Robinson. "You’ve got to think beyond today’s anger but look for tomorrow’s future."

Racine police have not disclosed whether any suspects have been identified or arrested.
