RACINE — A man and a woman have died after a shooting led to an hours-long standoff with Racine police officers Tuesday.

According to a press release from the Racine Police Department, officers responded to the 1100 block of Reschke Avenue about 11:03 a.m. for a report of a person being shot. At the scene, officers found a 48-year-old woman with multiple gunshot wounds.

Police said the suspect, a 51-year-old man, retreated into a home, prompting the standoff. 

Police crisis negotiators reportedly "established sporadic communications with the suspect … encouraging him to surrender," the RPD release said. 

According to the release, communications ceased and RPD SWAT team members at about 6:30 p.m. entered the residence, where the man was found with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Both the woman and the man reportedly were taken to the hospital and then flown via Flight for Life for further treatment. Police announced their deaths Wednesday but did not specify when they died.

Police initially called the shooting a domestic attempted homicide but did not indicate the relationship between the man and the woman.

RPD is seeking more information regarding the initial shooting. Anyone with information can contact the RPD Investigations Unit at 262-635-7756, or Crime Stoppers at 262-636-9330 or through the Crime Stoppers app to remain anonymous.

The Kenosha Police Department is handling the investigation related to the police standoff, due to department procedures.

The City of Greenfield has appointed an acting police chief following the announcement that Police Chief Jay Johnson was placed on paid administrative leave.

The Greenfield Police and Fire Commission appointed Assistant Police Chief Eric Lindstrom to be the acting chief on April 30, according to meeting minutes.

Johnson was placed on leave April 25 pending a review of “workforce concerns,” according to the city.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel has submitted open records requests to the city to obtain more information.

According to the city’s website, Lindstrom has been with the department since 2003. He has served as a field training officer, K-9 handler and SWAT team member, and is certified to instruct officers in several specialized enforcement areas.

He was promoted to patrol sergeant in 2015, detective sergeant in 2017, and later to captain and tactical commander, overseeing critical incident responses.

Since 2020, Lindstrom has also served as the team commander for the Milwaukee Area Investigative Team, leading investigations into officer-involved deaths.

I'm happy to learn that Colorado has ended qualified immunity for LEOs.  All the other states should follow suit and disallow this license to commit crimes without penalty.

RACINE — A suspect wanted for homicide was arrested in Racine early this week, according to the Racine Police Department.

According to a press release from the department, Chicago Police reached out to Racine saying that a 20-year-old man from Chicago who is wanted for a homicide was possibly hiding in Racine.

After investigating the situation for a couple of days, the Racine SWAT team arrested the man inside a home near Erie Street and 3 Mile Road.

Officials are still investigating the situation. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers by phone at (262) 636-9330, or through the Crime Stoppers app by using the p3 app.

Racine County sheriff: Supervisor posted man's bail, should be removed

RACINE COUNTY, Wis. - Racine County Sheriff Christopher Schmaling on Wednesday, Nov. 24 called for the immediate removal of a county supervisor who allegedly posted a man's $10,000 bail.

Video provided to FOX6 News by Schmaling shows that man – identified as Adrian Jefferson – with a high-powered weapon. The sheriff said Jefferson is currently facing a multitude of charges, accused of stealing SWAT equipment from a SWAT operator's home; that includes a pistol, sniper rifle and another fully-automatic rifle.

Jefferson is also facing felony charges of armed robbery, carrying a concealed weapon and intentionally pointing a firearm at law enforcement, the sheriff said.

The man Schmaling wants to see removed from the Racine County Board of Supervisors is Nick Demkse. The sheriff provided a photo that he says shows Demske posting Jefferson's bail.

By law, Jefferson is entitled to bail set by the court. However, in a statement, Schmaling said the supervisor's actions "put the public in grave danger" – and called for his immediate removal.

FOX6 News reached out to Demske for comment but did not immediately hear back
