Packers WR Funchess apologizes for slur against Asians

GREEN BAY — Green Bay Packers wide receiver Devin Funchess has apologized for using a racial slur against Asians during a news conference on Saturday night. Funchess said in a statement he posted on Twitter that he "meant no harm."
He added, "Those that know me, know I have love and respect or all cultures and people."
Funchess said he understood his comment was "not OK."

Long-simmering racial tensions in Burlington erupt after a teacher included Black Lives Matter in a lesson

Darnisha and John Garbade aren't naive. An interracial couple with a large blended family, they assumed, when they bought their home in the Burlington Area School District, that they wouldn't be welcomed by everyone.
Maybe her kids would get profiled while driving or shopping, Darnisha Garbade thought. Or a white girl might fall in love with her Black son against her parents' wishes. Nothing they couldn't handle, they thought.
But the Garbades were unprepared for the level of racial animus that has torn their community apart since late August when a Burlington elementary school teacher included the Black Lives Matter movement in a lesson about racism.
The hateful racial slurs — burned into the woodchips of a playground, painted on the floor of a new school building and shouted at students in an online classroom. The hostility and ugly exchanges on social media and at school board meetings.
"We thought our kids would have a great life here," said Darnisha Garbade, president of the Burlington Coalition for Dismantling Racism, which had been pushing district officials for more than a year to address residents' concerns about racial bias and discrimination.
"We had no idea our life would turn out this way," she said. "We never thought it would be like this."

Washington Post settles Nicholas Sandmann defamation lawsuit in Covington Catholic High School controversy
The Washington Post is the latest news organization to settle a defamation lawsuit launched by Covington Catholic High School student Nicholas Sandmann over its botched coverage of a viral confrontation with a Native American elder that had portrayed the Kentucky teen as the aggressor.
Sandmann announced the victory on Twitter.
"On 2/19/19, I filed $250M defamation lawsuit against Washington Post. Today, I turned 18 & WaPo settled my lawsuit. Thanks to @ToddMcMurtry & @LLinWood for their advocacy. Thanks to my family & millions of you who have stood your ground by supporting me. I still have more to do," Sandmann wrote on Friday.
This follows the multi-million dollar settlement CNN made with the teenager back in January.
Sandmann offered a not-so-subtle warning to Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey.
"We have settled with WAPO and CNN. The fight isn’t over. 2 down. 6 to go. Don’t hold your breath @jack," Sandmann tweeted.
Sandmann's attorney, Lin Wood, similarly wrote, "For our present to @N1ckSandmann to celebrate his 18th Birthday, @ToddMcMurtry & I gave Nicholas the gift of justice from . . . THE WASHINGTON POST #FightBack."
A spokesperson for The Washington Post told Fox News, "We are pleased that we have been able to reach a mutually agreeable resolution of the remaining claims in this lawsuit."
In March 2019, Sandmann's attorneys filed a suit against CNN for its coverage of the incident before all the facts had surfaced. The teen was seeking a whopping $800 million in damages from CNN, NBC and the Post.
Attorney Todd McMurtry previously told Fox News that lawsuits against “as many as 13 other defendants" would be filed.
Among them: ABC, CBS, The Guardian, The Huffington Post, NPR, Slate, The Hill, and Gannett which owns the Cincinnati Enquirer, as well as miscellaneous other small outfits, according to McMurtry. Separate lawsuits against the Washington Post and NBC have already been filed, he added.
Sandmann was swept up in a controversy after a video clip depicted the "MAGA" hat-wearing student smiling at Nathan Phillips beating a drum and singing a chant as he was surrounded by Sandmann's peers, who all had joined in on the chant in front of the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C.
However, several mainstream media outlets, including CNN and The Washington Post, portrayed the incident with Sandmann and the other teens as being racially charged before additional footage later showed that a group of Black Hebrew Israelites had provoked the confrontation, slinging racial slurs at the students as they were waiting for their bus following the March For Life event.
Footage then showed Phillips, who was in town for the Indigenous Peoples March, approaching the students amid the rising tension between the two groups.

Roger Stone denies using racial slur on radio show
New York (CNN Business)Roger Stone, the political operative who avoided 40 months in prison after US President Donald Trump commuted his sentence earlier this month, denied on Sunday using the word Negro on air toward a Black radio host.
The exchange took place on Saturday during Stone's appearance on "The Mo'Kelly Show," a Los Angeles-based radio broadcast. Host Morris O'Kelly questioned Stone on his conviction for lying to Congress and tampering with evidence by threatening a witness involved with Trump's 2016 campaign. He then asserted that Stone's sentence was commuted because of his longtime friendship with Trump.
"There are thousands of people treated unfairly daily, how your number just happened to come up in the lottery, I am guessing it was more than just luck, Roger, right?" O'Kelly asked.
Stone's voice was faint over the phone following O'Kelly's question. A voice could be heard murmuring "arguing with this Negro." O'Kelly then asked Stone to repeat the comment, but there was silence from Stone's end of the line.
"I'm sorry you're arguing with whom? I thought we were having just a very spirited conversation," O'Kelly said. "What happened? ...You said something about 'Negro.'"
After a brief silence, Stone said he had not, adding, "You're out of your mind."
The word "Negro" was commonly used in the past to refer to Black Americans, according to Ferris State University — up until the 1960s. The term has since been considered as offensive toward Black Americans. In 2014, the US Army was slammed for its regulation allowing "black or African-American" personnel to be referred to as "Negro." It removed the word from the policy and apologized.
In a statement obtained by CNN Business, Stone denied using the term, stating he "despises racism." He also said the "word negro is far from a slur" according to his "many Black friends."
"Mr. O'Kelly needs a good peroxide cleaning of the wax in his ears because at no time did I call him a negro," Stone wrote.
Stone said it was a studio engineer who used the word "after he cut my sound feed off three times."
He also said the claim was a "smear designed to boost" O'Kelly's ratings, and that he had "retained a forensic sound technician and will publish a report shortly."

MADISON - Cher took a break from a European tour Tuesday to urge Madison school officials to apologize to a black security guard they fired for using the N-word while telling a student not to use the racial slur.
"I don’t think it’s enough that he gets his job back," Cher said in an interview with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "That’s not enough – they should apologize to him."
Marlon Anderson was fired by the Madison School District last week, setting off a firestorm of outcry that reached international heights – including from the 73-year-old Academy Award winner and longtime musician.
Cher, who has 3.7 million Twitter followers, tweeted Friday she would pay for Anderson's attorney fees should he pursue legal action against the district.
She said Tuesday by phone during a break from her tour in the United Kingdom that Anderson's story rose above others, in part, because she learned of it the day after Maryland congressman and civil rights activist Elijah Cummings died.

African American school guard in Madison fired for repeating racial slur student used against him

MADISON – A black security guard at a Wisconsin high school who was fired after he says he repeated a racial slur while telling a student who had called him that word not to use it has filed a grievance seeking his job back.
The Madison School District has a policy forbidding employees from saying racial slurs. But, Marlon Anderson, 48, says he was just trying to defend himself after a disruptive student unleashed a number of obscenities on him, including that slur.
West High Principal Karen Boran sent an email to families on Wednesday saying that racial slurs are not acceptable in schools, regardless of context or circumstance, the Wisconsin State Journal reported.
But Anderson told the State Journal, “We’re fighting this,” and the Madison teachers’ union filed a grievance with the district on his behalf.
“I just don’t understand getting fired for trying to defend yourself,” said Anderson, who worked for the district for 11 years. “As a black man, I have a right not to be called that word.”
Anderson said he was responding to a call on Oct. 9 about a disruptive male student who was being escorted by an assistant principal at West High. Anderson said the student pushed the principal’s hand off of himself, and the situation escalated, with the student, who is also black, calling Anderson obscenities including the slur.
Anderson said he told the student multiple times “do not call me that” and “do not call me that word,” and that Anderson repeated the slur during the confrontation while telling the teen not to use it.
During his time at East and West high schools, Anderson said he’s been called the slur by students “many times,” and that it has resulted in “restorative conversations” in which he explains the history, context and meaning of the slur.
Boran said the zero-tolerance approach on the use of racial slurs “has been applied consistently and will continue to be applied consistently.”
“I also want to ask for your partnership as we work to make our school climate the very best it can be for all of our students and our staff,” she said.
In a statement, interim Superintendent Jane Belmore said the expectation of staff to never use a racial slur “has been shared several times through communication and professional development.”
Last school year, there were at least seven cases in which a Madison School District staff member used a racial slur in front of students. All of those employees were either fired or resigned.
It’s not known whether the student faces disciplinary action.
