Windows 10’s latest update fail could break your desktop – here’s how to fix it

Windows 10 has a new reported bug which has been introduced thanks to its latest cumulative updates – which have also broken printers – but this time, the problem is that the OS is forcing the tablet mode interface on the normal desktop.
This is happening to users running Windows 10 May 2020 Update (having installed cumulative update KB4557957) and the November 2019 Update (with KB4561600), going by reports that Windows Latest spotted on Reddit and Microsoft’s own Answers.com forum (as well as the Windows 10 feedback hub).
As we recently saw with KB4557957, the idea is that it “optimizes the touch experience and keeps the familiar desktop experience when you detach the keyboard”, but it appears to also be errantly applying UI changes to the normal desktop.
In other words, folks who are using the mouse and keyboard on the normal desktop are having optimizations applied which are meant to make the desktop easy-to-use with touch-based controls.
That means more widely spaced icons on the taskbar – and the Search box not appearing on the taskbar, instead just being a small icon – and indeed File Explorer is adjusted to leave more white space and gaps between icons or menu elements, which is obviously most unwelcome for mouse and keyboard users.

Quick fix

Those reporting the issue note that uninstalling the cumulative update in question gets rid of the problem, but fortunately if you want to keep the update – and relevant security fixes – in place, there is a workaround here.
The simple fix for those running the May 2020 Update as described on Reddit is to tweak Windows 10’s tablet settings.

To do this, click on the Start button and click the Settings cog, then click ‘System’, then ‘Tablet’. Now click on ‘Change additional tablet settings’, and make sure that all the options under ‘When I’m not using tablet mode’ are turned off. Reboot your PC, and the problematic interface changes should hopefully be a thing of the past.

Astrazeneca wins coronavirus vaccine deal with Germany, France, Italy and the Netherlands

ROME (Reuters) - British drugmaker AstraZeneca (NYSE:AZN) Plc said on Saturday it signed a contract with Italy, Germany, France and the Netherlands to supply Europe with a vaccine against the coronavirus, with deliveries starting by the end of 2020.
The contract is for up to 400 million doses of the vaccine, developed by the University of Oxford, the company said, adding that it was looking to expand manufacturing of the vaccine, which it pledged to provide for no profit during the pandemic.
"With our European supply chain due to begin production
soon, we hope to make the vaccine available widely and rapidly," Chief Executive Pascal Soriot said in a statement.
The experimentation phase of the vaccine is already advanced and expected to end in the autumn, Italian Health Minister Roberto Speranza said in a Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) post.
AstraZeneca has agreed manufacturing deals globally to meet its target of producing 2 billion doses of the vaccine, including with two ventures backed by Bill Gates and a $1.2 billion agreement with the U.S. government.
There are no approved vaccines or treatments for COVID-19, the highly contagious respiratory illness caused by the novel coronavirus.
"Many countries in the world have already secured vaccines, Europe has not yet. The rapid coordinated action of a group of member states will create added value for all EU citizens in this crisis," German Health Minister Jens Spahn said.
The European Commission received a mandate from EU governments on Friday to negotiate advance purchases of promising coronavirus vaccines, the EU's top health official said, but it was unclear whether there would be enough money available.

More than 40,000 lbs of ground beef recalled, USDA says

The US Department of Agriculture says about 40,000 pounds of ground beef are being recalled.

The seven affected products are from Lakeside Refrigerated Services in New Jersey because they may be contaminated with E. coli , according to a CNN report.

The raw ground beef products produced by Lakeside Refrigerated Services, a company in Swedesboro, New Jersey, were shipped to retail locations nationwide, according to FSIS.

The recalled products were produced on June 1 and have the establishment number "EST. 46841" inside the USDA mark of inspection.

"E. coli O157:H7 is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause dehydration, bloody diarrhea and abdominal cramps 2-8 days (3-4 days, on average) after exposure the organism," reads the recall notice from FSIS. "While most people recover within a week, some develop a type of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome."

Some kinds of E. coli cause disease by producing Shiga toxin. The bacteria that make these toxins are called "Shiga toxin-producing" E. coli (STEC). The most commonly found STEC in the United States is E. coli O157:H7.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that there are 265,000 STEC infections each year in the United States. E. coli O157:H7 causes more than 36% of these infections.

A detailed list of recalled products is on the FSIS website.

Police officer paralyzed after being shot in Las Vegas protest

The family of a Las Vegas police officer shot during protests two weeks ago over the death of George Floyd say in a new statement that the officer is paralyzed from the neck down and remains on a ventilator.
In the statement released on the police department's Twitter page, the family of 29-year-old officer Shay Mikalonis said that he is "unable to speak" but appears to be able to recognize family members in the room.
"We as a family, want to say thank you Las Vegas for your continuing support of Shay," the family added.

A 20-year-old suspect is currently in custody as part of the investigation and has been charged with attempted murder as well as a number of lesser charges, according to The Associated Press. Protests have continued in the city and dozens of others across the U.S. over the deaths of black Americans during encounters with the police, including recent victims such as Floyd and Breonna Taylor.
The protests have resulted in widespread calls for changes in law enforcement, particularly as videos have emerged of officers violently confronting protesters in some cities such as Buffalo, N.Y., where video of a 75-year-old being shoved to the ground by officers, causing a head injury, sparked outrage.

Body cam footage of Rayshard Brooks’ death shows calm, then chaos

The first 29 minutes don’t prepare you for the all-too-familiar tragedy that follows: a white police officer, a black male victim, lethal gunshots and questions about whether any of it was justified. It happened again in Atlanta Friday night, when Officer Garrett Rolfe fired three times at a fleeing Rayshard Brooks. Both men, 27 years old. The shooting would set off a stunning chain of events, culminating in the resignation early Saturday night by Atlanta Police Chief Erika Shields. (Video edited by Ryon Horne, Christian Boone)

Protests against police put $454 million in military gear under spotlight

From JSOnline:

Nick Penzenstadler and Daphne Chen, USA TODAY, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

As protests over police brutality lead to calls for law enforcement overhauls, a decades-old Department of Defense program faces renewed pressure from Congress to stem the flow of military equipment to police.
Local law enforcement agencies have obtained nearly half a billion dollars of surplus military equipment under the so-called 1033 Program since August 2017, when President Donald Trump lifted restrictions imposed by the Obama administration, a USA TODAY/Milwaukee Journal Sentinel analysis found.
Because the Department of Defense does not report items that police obtained but decommissioned or returned, the true amount of military equipment given to police since 2017 is probably higher.

Value of military equipment transferred to law enforcement

Law enforcement agencies have received almost $454 million in surplus military equipment since Trump lifted restrictions on the 1033 Program. This is about the same amount law enforcement received while the Obama administration's restrictions were in place.
Using federal data, the analysis found that law enforcement agencies largely gave up controversial items such as grenade launchers and bayonets, prohibited under the Obama administration.
Police have increasingly obtained other military-grade equipment such as riot gear and Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles, the hulking, heavily armored vehicles designed to withstand explosive blasts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Such equipment has been spotted in Minneapolis and Spokane, Washington, during protests in response to the death of George Floyd, an unarmed, handcuffed black man who died as a police officer kept his knee on Floyd's neck for nearly nine minutes.
According to the latest federal data, police agencies possess nearly 1,100 MRAPs through the program, nearly double the number in 2014, when protests in Ferguson, Missouri, over the fatal police shooting of Michael Brown, another unarmed black man, put the program under a microscope.
Legislation unveiled last week by House and Senate Democrats would go further than Obama’s executive order. Certain firearms, ammunition, grenade launchers, bayonets, mine-resistant vehicles, drones, silencers and long-range acoustic devices (LRADs) used to deter riots would be prohibited.

Disturbing NEW VIDEO shows cop standing guard as George Floyd dies

A screenshot from the video released by Benjamin Crump on June 14, 2020 © Instagram / @attorneycrump

New video footage from the killing of George Floyd by police officer Derek Chauvin shows fellow officer Tou Thao standing between Floyd and a crowd of horrified bystanders, who plead with Thao to intervene and save Floyd’s life.
A graphic video clip released by Floyd family attorney Benjamin Crump on Sunday shows the killing of Floyd from a new angle, and casts police officer Tou Thao in a damning light.
“This is beyond disturbing, even harder to watch than the first video,” Crump captioned the five-minute clip. “Tou Thao stood guard as Derek Chauvin MURDERED George Floyd ... while witnesses of the execution tried to stand up for JUSTICE, tried to save George’s life!”
The video opens with Chauvin’s knee on Floyd’s neck. “He’s not f**king moving, bro,” bystanders scream at Thao. “You gonna let him kill that man in front of you?” one man asks. “He’s black, they don’t care,” another witness sighs. Floyd is eventually rolled onto a stretcher and taken away by an ambulance, as Thao attempts to push the crowd onto the sidewalk.
Unlike the initial video of the incident, which shocked the nation and provoked nearly three weeks of protests and violent riots, the latest clip focuses on Thao, who remains stone-faced as the bystanders beg for help.
Thao has been charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder, as have two other officers present. Chauvin has been charged with second-degree murder and manslaughter, and all four have been sacked from the Minneapolis Police Department.

RCC STANDS CORRECTED

From Racine County Corruption:

Art Howell
Chief of Police
City of Racine

Unknown to RCC at the time we sent an open letter
to Police Chief Art Howell, we belittled the Chief for his silence after being accused of harboring white supremacist  murderers
within his department.

We were promptly informed that our take of the silence was wrong and we want to make it right.
Truth be known, Chief Howell had been very active using diplomatic channels to prop his officers and address the outrageous and unsubstantiated attack by Police and Fire commission board member and REU president Angelina Cruz.
Angelina Cruz
REU President
&
City of Racine Police and Fire commission board member

Chief Howell wisely used diplomatic channels rather than the press to address Ms. Cruz's unsubstantiated statements.

Being there was no public dialogue by the chief concerning Cruz's statements, we assumed that Cruz had gotten a free pass to say whatever she wants to say about law enforcement.

We are pleased to say Cruz is currently under heavy scrutiny by the public and numerous members and supporters of law enforcement.

Sorry Chief for getting it wrong.

Virginia GOP congressman who officiated same-sex wedding loses primary battle

A first-term Republican congressman in Virginia who drew the ire of social conservatives in his district for officiating a same-sex wedding lost his party’s primary on Saturday.
Rep. Denver Riggleman, R-Va., lost a GOP convention Saturday that was done via drive-thru because of the coronavirus pandemic. He lost to Bob Good, a former official in the athletics department at Liberty University and a strong social conservative.
While the convention ended at 7 p.m., the vote tally was not announced until after 1 a.m. Sunday. Good won 58 percent of the vote, campaign manager Nancy Smith told The Associated Press. Melvin Adams, 5th District Republican Committee chair, said 2,537 of the more than 3,500 registered delegates voted, news outlets reported.
“Resounding win!” Smith wrote in an email.
Riggleman, a member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, upset many Republicans in his district last summer when he officiated the wedding of two male campaign aides.
President Trump endorsed Riggleman, as did Liberty University President Jerry Falwell Jr.

The convention was held at a Lynchburg-area church near Good’s home and was the only place delegates could cast a ballot in a district that stretches from northern Virginia to the North Carolina border.
Riggleman has said a small coterie of Republican insiders were trying to rig the contest against him, forcing the nomination process to be decided with a convention instead of a primary. Conventions favor more conservative candidates and have been used for years by Virginia Republicans to block moderate Republicans from winning office.
“Voting irregularities and ballot stuffing has been reported in multiple counties in the #VA05. Voter fraud has been a hallmark of this nomination process and I will not stand for it,” Riggleman tweeted a little over an hour before results were announced. “@VA_GOP needs to reevaluate their priorities. We are evaluating all our options at this time.”
Good is now the Republican nominee for Virginia’s 5th Congressional District. Four Democrats are vying to challenge him in the fall, with the winner picked later this summer
“That’s what losers say," Good told reporters, commenting on Riggleman's allegations of irregularities.
Good has pledged to restore “Judeo-Christian” values to Congress. He’s also a hardliner on immigration and wants English to be the official language of the U.S. His victory could make national Democrats and outside groups more likely to spend money in the district, which easily went for Trump in 2016.

Tenants behind on rent in pandemic face harassment, eviction

The coronavirus pandemic has shut housing courts and prompted most states and federal authorities to initiate policies protecting renters from eviction

BALTIMORE -- Jeremy Rooks works the evening shift at a Georgia fast-food restaurant these days to avoid being on the street past dusk. He needs somewhere to go at night: He and his wife are homeless after the extended-stay motel where they had lived since Thanksgiving evicted them in April when they couldn’t pay their rent.
They should have been protected because the state's Supreme Court has effectively halted evictions due to the coronavirus pandemic. But Rooks said the owner still sent a man posing as a sheriff’s deputy, armed with a gun, to throw the couple out a few days after rent was due.
The pandemic has shut housing courts and prompted most states and federal authorities to initiate policies protecting renters from eviction. But not everyone is covered and a number of landlords -- some desperate to pay their mortgages themselves -- are turning to threats and harassment to force tenants out.
“Every day, they tried to basically get us out of there. It was basically like a game to them,” said Rooks, who wasn’t able to make his rent at the Marietta, Georgia, motel after his employer paid him late and his wife was laid off in the pandemic. “One of us had to stay in a room at all times because they wouldn’t redo the keys for us.”

Ford recalls 2 million vehicles because the doors could open while driving

(CNN)Ford is recalling more than 2 million vehicles in the US because the doors could open while the vehicle is being driven.
These vehicles have been recalled before for faulty door latches but, according to Ford, some dealers that claimed to have fixed this problem during the previous recalls either didn't do the work correctly or didn't do it at all. Ford did not name any specific dealerships. CNN Business has contacted a dealership association, but has yet to hear back.
The recall covers a range of models, including some Ford Fiesta, Focus, Fusion, C-Max and Mustang cars, Escape SUVs, Transit Connect vans, as well as Lincoln MKZ sedans and MKC SUVs, with model years ranging from 2011 to 2016. (Model year ranges vary by the specific model.)
The problem results from a door latch part that can crack, especially when subjected to high heat. That can make the door difficult to close properly so that, as the car is driven, the door can unexpectedly pop open.
Ford said in a statement that it is not aware of any crashes or injuries from doors coming open, but the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's public safety reporting database contains numerous complaints of doors suddenly coming open while vehicles are being driven.
This recall follows two earlier recalls in 2016 and 2017 covering the same problem. Each of the previous recalls covered a different subset of Ford and Lincoln vehicles from this most recent recall.
Anyone who thinks their vehicle may be involved in this recall should search the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's recall database or contact their local Ford dealer.
Owners will also have the option to inspect the door latch date codes on their vehicle and submit those codes online to check if the recall work needs to be done.
Ford also announced a recall of more than 290,000 F-150 trucks with 3.5-liter V6 engines. In some of those trucks from the 2014 to 2017 model years, a leak in the brake master cylinder may weaken the front brakes. The truck may emit an audible warning chime inside the cab, show an alert in the dashboard message center and display red brake warning indicator, Ford said.
There have been at least seven low-speed crashes alleged to be a result of this issue and two injuries that Ford is aware of, the company said in a statement. The truck may emit an audible warning chime, show an alert in the dashboard message center and display red brake warning indicator.

'The Art Of Her Deal' Aims To Show Melania Trump As An Influential Collaborator

The Art of Her Deal: The Untold Story of Melania Trump, by Mary Jordan
    Simon & Schuster
From the outside, Melania Trump looks like a woman in over her tastefully balayaged head. At public events, she rarely speaks, but assumes the rictus smolder — like a model who has just spotted a lion over the photographer's shoulder — that inspired a thousand #freemelania signs.
A new, scrupulously reported biography by Washington Post reporter Mary Jordan counters this perception, arguing that the first lady is not a pawn but a player, an accessory in the second as much as the first sense, and a woman able to get what she wants from one of the most powerful and transparently vain men in the world. The book is called The Art of Her Deal.
For this book, Jordan interviewed more than a hundred people, including Melania's Slovenian childhood acquaintances, staff members at Donald Trump's properties, players in the New York and Paris modeling world, and one-time Trump insiders like Chris Christie, Roger Stone, and Anthony Scaramucci. She also spoke briefly to the first lady herself in the course of her reporting on the 2016 election. The result is a convincing case that those "who dismiss her as nothing more than an accessory do not understand her or her influence."

    to Racine, Cory
    Good morning Art,

I know you have been extremely busy since the beginning of the month.
There appears to be many within our country and community who would prefer anarchy over civilized life.
That being said, effective law enforcement needs the public support more than ever.
As you have acquiesced  to the mayor's demand of transferring $47,000 from your department for another survey and such, I view the transfer of funds having little impact upon your office and only as a pirate victory for the Mayor.  Sadly, the 47,000 dollars will be squandered as the mayor continues to covertly attack you and your department.

Angelina Cruz has used the REU platform to indirectly accuse you of having white supremacist murderers within your organization. The silence by your office regarding these accusations is disheartening. At very least you should stand up for your department, call out Ms.Cruz to identify the alleged murderers by name and force her to back her smack. As a Police and Fire commission board member, Angelina Cruz must be held accountable to a higher standard for her words, If left unchallenged, Ms. Cruz 's statements will continue to fester within the community, compromising the integrity and capacity of your office to serve and protect.

    That's my view.

    Harry
