Coronavirus: ‘Double mutant' variant found in California's Bay Area

A new variant of the coronavirus has been found in California's Bay Area.

The Stanford Clinical Virology Lab, through genomic sequencing, has identified and confirmed one case of the emerging variant, which originated in India, according to a spokesperson for Stanford Health Care on Sunday. At least seven presumed cases of the Indian variant were also found.

The variant is being labeled as the "double mutant" because it carries two mutations in the virus that helps it latch onto cells, reports said.

"If you are in an elevator with someone that is infected with the variant you are more likely to be infected by that variant," said Stanford Clinical Virology Lab Director, Dr. Ben Pinsky, according to FOX 2 of the San Francisco Bay Area.

UCSF's Dr. Peter Chin-Hong, an infectious disease expert, called the variant "less forgiving."

He noted that the variant could be more infectious because it accounts for 20% of cases in the hard-hit Indian state of Maharashtra. Cases there have increased 50% within the last week, he said.

"It also makes sense that it will be more transmissible from a biological perspective as the two mutations act at the receptor-binding domain of the virus, but there have been no official transmission studies to date," he told the San Francisco Chronicle.

Chin-Hong added that it’s too early to know if the variant -- first detected by Indian health officials this year -- can cause reinfections or is more resistant to vaccine antibodies. One of the mutations was similar to a variant that was first detected in California. Another mutation was found on variants that were first detected in Brazil and South Africa.

"This Indian variant contains two mutations in the same virus for the first time, previously seen on separate variants," Chin-Hong said. "Since we know that the domain affected is the part that the virus uses to enter the body, and that the California variant is already potentially more resistant to some vaccine antibodies, it seems to reason that there is a chance that the Indian variant may do that too."

While Chin-Hong said studies have yet to confirm this, he felt "optimistic" vaccinations could work based on the known efficacy against variants originating from South Africa and California. Chin-Hong added that the UK Variant, B.1.1.7, is more transmissible.

"I, in my heart of hearts, believe that the vaccines will still be effective against this new Indian variant based on some of the information we’ve been getting about the even scary variants, like the South Africa variant, and how Pfizer's vaccine is actually effective against it," Chin-Hong told FOX 2. "The sun is shining over California, our cases are down. We’ve made great progress. But, we need to be safe, we need to keep our guard up."

Chicago to Release Video of Deadly Police Shooting of a 13-Year-Old

From The Nrw York Times.com:

The shooting has tapped into a tide of anguish and frustration in Chicago neighborhoods that have been gripped by recurring gun violence.

On the night of March 28, Elizabeth Toledo thought her 13-year-old son, Adam, was finally home. He had returned after days away. She had even called the Chicago police to report him missing. But that Sunday night, she would later tell reporters, she saw him go into the room he shared with his brother.

The next day, he was gone. Ms. Toledo later heard from the police: Adam was dead, fatally shot by a police officer who had chased him into an alley early in the morning on March 29, just hours after she last saw him.

“I just want to know what really happened to my baby,” Ms. Toledo said at a news conference last week, demanding transparency from law enforcement officials and expressing disbelief that Adam — who, she said, played with Legos and rode bikes with his siblings — would end up in what the police called an “armed confrontation.”

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability, an independent agency that handles investigations involving the Chicago Police Department, initially withheld the footage from body cameras worn by the officers involved in the shooting, but now says it plans to release the video. The announcement comes as the nation continues to contend with tensions over police violence, particularly when it comes to Black and Latino residents, amid the wrenching testimony in the trial of the officer accused of murder in the death of George Floyd.

"We're So Stupid Following Our Politicians" - Charles Barkley Unleashes One Minute Of Truth On America

From ZeroHedge:

SUNDAY, APR 04, 2021 - 12:25 PM

Forget Orwell's "Two Minutes Hate." NBA legend Charles Barkley unleashed 'One Minute Truth' on NCAA-Final-Four-watchers last night, telling viewers that:

“I truly believe in my heart most white people and black people are awesome people, but we’re so stupid following our politicians, whether they’re Republicans or Democrats."

Barkley was responding to a feature that detailed how on April 4, 1968, Robert F. Kennedy broke the news about the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. to a crowd in Indianapolis, urging people to seek compassion and justice rather than anger and revenge, saying the vast majority of Americans, both black and white, want to live in peace with each other.

As a reminder, Robert F. Kennedy was assassinated two months later.

This was the same message Barkley offered, as he warned:

"I think our system is set up where our politicians, whether they’re Republicans or Democrats, are designed to make us not like each other so they can keep their grasp of money and power."

Furthermore, he described what he believes to be the thinking behind the divide-and-conquer strategy:

“Hey, let’s make these people not like each other. We don’t live in their neighborhoods, we all got money, let’s make the whites and blacks not like each other, let’s make rich people and poor people not like each other, let’s scramble the middle class.”

Watch the full clip here:

This is not the first time Barkley has unleashed uncomfortable truths. In September of last year he dared to speak common sense against the left's calls to defund the police, arguing that poor black communities would be hit hardest by a spike in crime if there is less policing. “Who are black people supposed to call, Ghostbusters, when we have crime in our neighborhood?”

How long will it be before the outrage mob comes for Barkley for taking such a "bothist" common-sense and honest view and refusing to be drawn, like weak CEOs or pandering politicians to one side or the other in our ever more divisive society?

It's already begun...

8-year-old mistakenly vaccinated at COVID-19 vaccine site in Dallas County

COVID-19 vaccine

An 8-year-old received a COVID-19 vaccine at a vaccination site in Dallas County.

Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins confirmed that an error allowed an 8-year-old to get an appointment through the county’s registration site.

The child was vaccinated at the Grand Prairie/Irving site.

Jenkins said the issue that allowed the 8-year-old to get an appointment has been addressed, and they are still asking people to sign up for the vaccine on the county site.

The county’s IT department is also working with another organization to make sure this doesn’t happen again.

As of Monday, Texans over the age of 16 are eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine.

Racine man charged in Regency Mall burglary

From Fox6Now:

Decarion Powell

A 23-year-old Racine man has been charged with breaking into Regency Mall on March 29.

Prosecutors say Decarion Powell stole tens of thousands of dollars in property from a jewelry store before being stopped by police inside the mall.

Police were called to Regency Mall around 12:30 a.m. on March 29 after a motion alarm was triggered. When they arrived, officers found smashed glass and saw a man -- later identified as Powell -- exiting a coffee shop.

A criminal complaint states Powell ran when saw the officers in the hallway. Officers gave chase and eventually detained Powell at a pretzel kiosk.

When officers told Powell they were going to start checking stores, the complaint states Powell said he had going into a jewelry store. Police searched Powell and uncovered roughly 200 pieces of jewelry and more than $400 cash. He also had a hammer and screwdriver.

At the jewelry store, police noted Powell appeared to have only targeted locked jewelry cabinets, which seemed to be smashed open with a hammer, according to the complaint.

Police estimated the value of the stolen property to be $40,000. The complaint states Powell caused an estimated $700 in damage to the surveillance system and door of the coffee shop.

Powell is charged with the following seven counts:

  • Burglary of a building or dwelling
  • Theft of movable property ( > $10,000 - $100,000)
  • Possession of burglarious tools
  • Criminal damage to property (3 counts)
  • Obstructing an officer

A preliminary hearing in the case is scheduled for April 14.

Schumer: Senate will act on marijuana legalization with or without Biden

From POLITICO:

The majority leader shared his plans for cannabis legislation with POLITICO in an exclusive interview.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer really likes to talk about weed.

Schumer has been making waves on cannabis policy since he first introduced a bill to legalize marijuana in April 2018. It was part of his pitch for voting Democrat in the 2020 election, and now — with the majority in hand — he is putting together new federal marijuana reform legislation with Sens. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) and Ron Wyden (D-Ore.).

This week, Schumer’s home state of New York legalized marijuana use for adults, after years of failed efforts. More than 40 percent of Americans now live in states that have embraced full legalization.

President Joe Biden has been a conspicuous outlier among Democrats when it comes to supporting marijuana legalization. But Schumer said Biden’s reticence won’t deter the Senate from taking aggressive action to loosen federal restrictions.

“I want to make my arguments to him, as many other advocates will,” Schumer said in an interview with POLITICO this week. “But at some point we're going to move forward, period.“

Schumer pointed to the decade-long experiment with state legalization as evidence that the worst fears of what would happen were overblown. “The legalization of states worked out remarkably well,“ he said. “They were a great success. The parade of horribles never came about, and people got more freedom.“

Amazon apologizes to U.S. Rep. Mark Pocan for bogus ‘peeing’ tweet

From JSOnline:
Joseph Pisani
Associated Press

Amazon is sorry for tweeting about peeing.

The company apologized in a late Friday blog post for a tweet it sent to Democratic U.S. Rep. Mark Pocan of Madison more than a week ago denying that its employees work so hard they must urinate in empty water bottles. It also admitted that some delivery drivers might have had to urinate in bottles and it vowed to improve their working conditions.

U.S. Rep. Mark Pocan

The matter was first raised March 24 by Pocan, who responded to a tweet by an Amazon executive that said the company was a progressive workplace.

“Paying workers $15/hr doesn’t make you a ‘progressive workplace’ when you union-bust & make workers urinate in water bottles,” Pocan said in his tweet.

Amazon responded: “You don’t really believe the peeing in bottles thing, do you? If that were true, nobody would work for us.”

In the Friday night blog post, Amazon apologized to Pocan and acknowledged that delivery drivers “can and do have trouble finding restrooms because of traffic or sometimes rural routes.” The online shopping giant said COVID-19 has made the issue worse, since many public restrooms are closed.

“Sigh,” Pocan responded in a Saturday morning tweet. “This is not about me, this is about your workers – who you don’t treat with enough respect or dignity.”

Amazon wrote in its blog post that urinating in bottles is an industry-wide problem. To try and prove its point, it shared links to news articles about drivers for other delivery companies who have had to do so.

“Regardless of the fact that this is industry-wide, we would like to solve it,” the company said. “We don’t yet know how, but will look for solutions.”

Amazon’s treatment of workers has been a hot topic recently as it faces the biggest union push in its history at an Alabama warehouse. Organizers there are pushing for more break time and better pay, with many complaining about the back-breaking 10-hour workdays that include only two 30-minute breaks.

Seattle-based Amazon didn’t respond to a request for comment.

'2021 is still difficult': Homicides in Milwaukee take a dip in early 2021, but persist at higher rate than normal

From JSOnline:
Elliot Hughes
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

Given long-standing seasonal patterns in crime trends, it’s may be no surprise the homicide rate and gun violence that reached historic highs in Milwaukee in 2020 slowed during the first quarter of 2021.

From January through March, homicides drifted back in the direction of pre-2020 averages for this time of year. But the violence, especially nonfatal shootings, has persisted at higher-than-normal rates.

“I believe we’re managing,” said Acting Police Chief Jeffrey Norman in an interview with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “2021 is still difficult. Crime is still at high levels.

“As an executive leader, I've got to be optimistic.”

As of March 31, Milwaukee had recorded 27 homicides this year. That’s down from 35 during the same window in 2020, a period that did not include the brunt of the pandemic but was still marred by rarer incidents, such as a mass shooting at the Molson Coors complex in which a worker killed five people, then killed himself.

Cher ridiculed for claiming she ‘could’ve HELPED’ George Floyd had she ‘been there’ – told ‘singing songs doesn’t erase racism’

From RT:

  REUTERS/Steve Marcus

Singer and vocal liberal Cher found herself trending on Twitter and being accused of white-savior fantasies, after she tweeted a bizarre message saying she “could’ve helped” George Floyd.
“Was talking With Mom & She Said ‘I Watched Trial Of Policeman Who Killed George Floyd,& Cried,’” Cher tweeted during the ongoing trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin.

It was the second part of the Academy Award winner’s message that raised eyebrows as she appeared to insinuate that Floyd, who died in May of last year after being arrested, would still be alive today had she been at the scene.

“I Said ‘Mom,I Know This Is Gonna Sound CRAZY,But.. I Kept Thinking .....Maybe If I’d Been There,...I Could’ve Helped,” she tweeted.

Cher, who is known today more for her grammatically frantic anti-Trump messages on social media, found herself trending on Saturday as tweets mocking her message received thousands of likes and retweets on Twitter, nearly matching the popularity of her original message.

Some fans, however, showed support for Cher’s message, citing her liberal activism in the past.

“Too many folks' hearts have hardened too much. Fascism and white supremacy does that to folks. It alienates us from our shared humanity. Cher spoke her truth of solidarity,” Salon’s Chauncey Devega tweeted.

“For all of you defending Cher’s comments, Think about what you’re saying – Black people need the intervention of white celebrities to keep white cops from murdering them. That’s a sad indictment on America,” author and Bishop Talbert Swan tweeted in reaction to people defending Cher’s “heart” being “in the right place.”

Others pointed out that there were witnesses at the scene of Floyd’s death, but they were unable to intervene, meaning Cher’s presence would have been meaningless. The singer appeared aware of this since she praised witnesses testifying in the trial earlier in the week.

The first week of Chauvin’s trial concluded on Friday. The former officer is facing multiple murder charges. Called to the stand in the first week were witnesses such as the woman who filmed the original viral video of Chauvin pushing his knee onto Floyd’s neck after he’d been detained and was already on the ground.

Experts were also called like Lt. Richard Zimmerman who has served with the Minneapolis Police Department since 1985. While Chauvin’s lawyers noted Zimmerman had not worked street patrol like Chauvin did for many years, the officer’s testimony that Chauvin’s tactics were “top tier, deadly force” was seen by many as a win for the prosecution.

As COVID-19 cases rise, health officials recommend Wisconsin residents take caution with spring and summer gatherings

From JSOnline:
Drake Bentley
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services updated its website to include recommendations for both fully vaccinated and unvaccinated people, as well as guidelines for spring and summer activities and gatherings.

Recommendations for unvaccinated people remain the same, including wearing a mask, socially distancing, washing your hands, and avoiding gatherings.

If you are not fully vaccinated yet, the state's health department continues to advise against attending or hosting gatherings with people who don’t live with you and who are not fully vaccinated.

Fully vaccinated people are being asked to wear a mask and socially distance when in public, gathering with unvaccinated people from more than one other household or  visiting with an unvaccinated person who is at increased risk of severe illness or death from COVID-19.

CBD store raided in Menomonee Falls after two small children had a nonfatal overdose, sheriff says

From JSOnline:
Cathy Kozlowicz
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

A CBD store in Menomonee Falls was raided and three people were arrested after two small children had a nonfatal overdose after unintentionally ingesting a CBD-related product bought from the store.

The investigation into the overdose incident led to law enforcement executing a search warrant March 30 at Superstar Buds, N88-W16733 Main St., according to the news release from the Waukesha County Sheriff Department.

In the investigation leading to the raid, authorities obtained evidence the business was selling products containing prohibited levels of delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol or delta-9-THC, according to the news release.

The Sheriff's Department said in the news release that state law allows for the sale of CBD-related products only if the delta-9-THC levels are not more than 3%. Several of the products obtained from the store during this investigation had delta-9-THC levels of more than 20%.
