Marquette women's basketball team adds former Racine star Sam Logic to coaching staff

From JSOnline:

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

The Marquette women's basketball team added a familiar name to its coaching staff.

Head coach Cara Consuegra announced on April 28 that she has hired former Racine Case High School standout Sam Logic as an assistant.

The 32-year-old Logic was a McDonald's All-American and the Miss Basketball winner in 2011.

"I am very excited to be back home and join the Marquette women's basketball family," Logic said in a statement. "I believe in Cara and her vision for her program and I cannot wait to get to campus and help build on the success of this team."

Logic played at Iowa from 2011-2015, becoming a second-team All-American as a senior. When she graduated, Logic was the only player in NCAA history to have at least 1,500 career points, 800 rebounds, 800 assists and 200 steals.

Consuegra is also a former Iowa player.

Logic was the 10th pick in the 2015 WNBA Draft and she played 27 games in one season with the Atlanta Dream and the San Antonio Stars. She also had several stops in foreign leagues.

"We are excited to have Sam join our staff," Consuegra said. "Sam is someone I've known and respected for a long time. She is a high character individual who aligns with our program's core values. Her outstanding college experience and years of playing professionally will bring a unique perspective to our players and impact our program right away."

6 shot at Racine vigil for Horlick basketball star

From Fox6Now:

Gunfire rang out in Racine Sunday night, Oct. 17, and six people were hurt. According to Racine police, it happened as officers showed up to address a large and loud crowd in the street near Yout and Carter.

Sunday marked the one-year anniversary of the death of Marcus "Earl" Caldwell, a former Horlick basketball star who was fatally shot near the intersection of Yout and Geneva.

Now, detectives are investigating another shooting in that area.

Neighbors said they heard more than one shooter after 11 p.m. Sunday night in Racine.

"We heard one, and then it sounded like it was just a firecracker and I thought it was maybe one of the neighbors playing a joke," said William Confer, neighbor.

Confer said he wasn't exactly sure what noise he and his fiancee heard as they tried to sleep until a few seconds later.

"And then it turned out to be that like, 10 or so shots went out after that," said Confer.

Confer said they ran to the back of the house as gunshots were fired just down their block near the intersection of Yout and Carter on Racine's north side. Video from a different neighbor shows the crime scene as it developed just seconds later.

Police said the shots were fired as officers were responding to address a large crowd, which was loud and included reckless driving. The officers then provided first aid to six victims, all of whom are expected to survive.

A look at the scene Monday revealed the damage. One homeowner said her glass door was shot as she was trying to run inside to escape the gunfire. Neighbors said bullets went through other homes.

On the corner, candles and empty beer bottles were left behind following a vigil for Caldwell, 20, who was killed Oct. 17, 2020.

Confer called for an end to the violence.

"It's just...enough is enough," said Confer. "It's just, I don't even feel safe around here anymore, and we might end up moving."

The Racine Police Department wouldn't share whether they have a suspect in this case. They ask anyone with information on what happened to call them right away.

Almost 500 new COVID-19 cases potentially linked to Deer District gatherings

From JSOnline:
Vanessa SwalesAlison Dirr
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

With a crowd of about 100,000 fans packed in the Deer District, cheering on the Milwaukee Bucks last month, the game not only produced a long-awaited NBA championship, but also a much-dreaded surge in the number COVID-19 cases across the state.

Milwaukee Health Commissioner Kirsten Johnson said the contact tracing and testing for cases associated with Deer District gatherings are ongoing. She said the Milwaukee Health Department has been working closely with the Wisconsin Department of Health Services and has identified almost 500 cases statewide, including Milwaukee, Dane, Ozaukee and Waukesha counties.

The state Department of Health Services reported that 491 people with confirmed or probable cases said they had attended the Deer District or Bucks game "during their exposure or infectious periods" but the department could not say definitively that they caught the virus while viewing the game downtown or elsewhere.

The department also said the figure was likely an undercount.

"We anticipated an increase in positive cases due to the delta variant but 155% increase in one week is distressing," Johnson said.

She urged people to get tested if they have attended any large gatherings.

"I think it is important to recognize that any time there is a large gathering of people, we are going to see the virus spread," Johnson said during a Tuesday COVID-19 briefing.

Health officials said the city has entered into the "extreme transmission" category, and the number of cases has reached 193.2 per 100,000 as of Tuesday.

Officials also raised concerns about statewide hospitalization rates.

"We have four times as many people hospitalized with COVID in Wisconsin as we did one month ago, from 74 individuals to 310 today," said Dr. Ben Weston, director of medical services at the Milwaukee County Office of Emergency Management, during the briefing.

Additional action could come from the city, according to Johnson, who said she was working with the city’s Department of Employee Relations on a measure mandating vaccines for city employees, a step taken by Los Angeles, the state of California and New York City.

“We are currently working through what that may look like,” Johnson said.

She did not have a timeframe for implementing such a policy.

Milwaukee Ald. Robert Bauman this week proposed legislation that would require city employees to prove they are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or test negative for the virus weekly as a condition of coming to work.

Six other council members previously put forward legislation that would require masks inside if the transmission level in the city reaches 100 or more cases per 100,000 people

The Health Department has issued an advisory that everyone, regardless of vaccination status, wear masks inside when with people outside their households.

Johnson on Tuesday did not rule out a return at some point to capacity limits for bars, restaurants and other venues but said there are no plans at this time to bring the limits back.

The council is on its August recess but there are rumblings about a potential special session this month to take up COVID-related legislation.

Johnson also said that she had been in conversation with multiple entertainment venues about potentially requiring proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test to attend events.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Tuesday that the city would require proof of COVID-19 vaccination for people to come into indoor restaurants, gyms and entertainment venues starting Aug. 16.

Stolen car 'vigilante' arrested, accused in road rage shooting

From WISN12ABC:

A Milwaukee man who tracks down stolen cars is accused of shooting two people.

Police said the shooting was the result of road rage, and now a man once praised for his work to recover stolen cars could face criminal charges.

With Milwaukee's stolen car rate through the roof, Jerod Brumfield, also known as "Ace Smith" stepped in to help.

In May, he told WISN 12 News about his stolen car recovery business.

"At the end of the day, I don't want the police job. I'm just trying to get out here and help the police get it under control," he said.

A week after that interview, he was shot at.

Now, the 35-year-old vigilante is in trouble, accused of shooting back.

Tuesday night, police arrested Brumfield, accused in a road rage shooting, near 24th and Locust streets that injured a 19-year-old man and 17-year-old girl.

"She is one of the state champions, and she is fighting," said the mother of the girl, Dede Rogers.

Rogers didn't want to name her daughter but said she's a rising basketball star. She was shot in the back and remains in the hospital.

"Nobody has the right to take matters into their own hands. There was a system built. Let the system do their job," Rogers said.

Police told WISN 12 News the car Brumfield allegedly shot at, was not stolen, but details of what led up to the road rage remain unclear,

For now, Brumfield is being held on $100,000 bail, as the district attorney's office reviews the case.

"Justice for my daughter begins now," Rogers said. "Anybody who loves her and knows her, I need ya'll strength. She needs you. She needs you all in these streets to stop," Rogers said.

Brumfield has not yet been charged.

The district attorney's office said the case was just given to them Friday morning, so a timeline for criminal charges is unknown right now.

MILWAUKEE (AP/TMJ4) — Hundreds of thousands of people squeezed into the streets of downtown Milwaukee to catch a glimpse of the Milwaukee Bucks in a parade that celebrates the city’s first NBA championship in half a century.

The team’s ascendance has invigorated a Midwestern city that is far from the league’s more cosmopolitan venues, like Los Angeles or Boston. And fans have embraced NBA Finals MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo, who decided to stay with the team that selected him eight years ago with the 15th overall pick in the draft when he was just 18 years old.

The players and owners boarded five double-decker buses Thursday as they rolled through the heart of the city. They finished with a celebration outside Fiserv Forum in the city’s Deer District.
