"The Federal Lawsuit alleges that Northwest Funeral Chapel had gained approval by the proper city commissions and had an accepted offer to purchase the building from the seller for $275K, only to be denied by the Racine Common Council.



"Less than 2 months later, The Marsh Meredith Funeral Home was granted permission by the Racine Common Council to purchase the property at 740 Lake Ave. for $225K and allowed to operate it’s funeral home without the same restrictions applied to Northwest Funeral Home just 2 months prior.

"The Federal Lawsuit alleges The City Of Racine had an ongoing policy and practice of showing favoritism and or bias in administering city government."

"Stacked in neat, methodical piles, they filled every room in the tiny apartment. The dining room, kitchen, bathroom, bedroom — all full of artwork.

"Cheryl Maxwell stood near the doorway staring at it all in awe before becoming so overwhelmed with emotion she had to sit down.

"'Surreal,' she thought.

"The paintings were the work of her younger sister, Carolyn Anne Watts, who Maxwell discovered had committed suicide at the age of 56. The family didn't know of the secret art until after her death in 2010.

"Watts had suffered from depression her whole life, but her sister hadn't realized how it had consumed her. She saw all the emotions, and the ups and downs her sister suffered, painted on the canvases. Guilt and sadness filled Maxwell's heart. Maybe, she thought, she could have done more.

"While it was too late for her sister, it wasn't for others. Maxwell soon saw how she could open up a dialogue about mental illness through the paintings that had stopped her in her tracks — and maybe save other lives. There were nearly 170 pieces of artwork, she later counted. Enough to fill a small art gallery."

Dear Madame Zoltar

Hello, my fellow travelers on the weather rollercoaster!  How are you?  When it’s been nice outdoors recently, it seems like everyone gets out.  Cabin fever takes some time to cure.  Everybody wants to smell some fresh air and feel warm breezes.  It will take a little time for the cabin fever aftereffects to die down.  Before you know it, we’ll be complaining about the heat.  It’s like there are rituals for every part of the year, except this one.  Unless you consider drinking massive quantities of green beer and then puking it up to be a ritual.  We need to make a bigger deal of the spring and fall equinoxes.  I don’t know that any saint wants to be associated with green gluttony.

However, the green sprouting to life all over the place is good and natural.  The daffodils and tulips near the foundation of our home are already several inches high.  With our climate, we have a way to go before we start planting annuals. It was in the 60’s on Monday and in the 40’s yesterday and today.  I think some vegetables tolerate, or even like, cooler temps.

And that’s as far as I got on today’s blog when Junior wanted to talk about colleges and Señor Zanza wanted to talk about more adult themes.

Life is just too busy at times.

Look out for the motorcycles making their reappearance on our roads.

Aurora Alert!

Big geomagnetic storm in progress today. I am watching aurora photos coming in from Europe right now and they are spectacular!

I just checked the Weather Underground and it is showing clear skies for Racine tonight so I figured I better post this quick!

There were aurora sightings from Wisconsin this morning before sunrise and the storm has intensified since then.

Oh, and it's a big one...no direct danger to people on the ground but strong enough that it could impact radio transmissions and GPS accuracy. Small chance some electrical grids could be tripped but probably not strong enough to cause permanent damage that would require extended downtime to fix.

"SALT LAKE CITY -- Utah has passed a bill that would make it the only state to allow firing squads for carrying out a death penalty if there is a shortage of execution drugs.

"The bill's passage in the state Senate on Tuesday comes as states struggle to obtain lethal injection drugs amid a nationwide shortage.

"The legislation's sponsor, Republican Rep. Paul Ray of Clearfield, touted the measure as being a more humane form of execution. A team of trained marksmen is faster and more humane than the drawn-out deaths that have occurred in botched lethal injections, Ray said.

"The bill gives Utah options, he said. 'We would love to get lethal injection worked out so we can continue with that but if not, now we have a backup plan,' Ray told The Associated Press."

I don't understand this "shortage of execution drugs."  What special drugs have to be used and why?  Junkies are killing themselves all over the country with heroin and God-knows-what else.  What about Propofol, the anesthetic that killed Michael Jackson?  Give 'em a heavy dose and they drift off to dead land.  I agree with Utah's decision. That's the first thing I told a friend of mine - "Just shoot them."

Dear Madame Zoltar

Hello, my thawing, winter warriors!  How are you?  Isn’t this weather gorgeous?  Next September, we’ll be whining about how the same temperatures are freezing us.  The only thing I see routinely during the spring thaw is all the dirt and garbage in the snow banks along the road that are finally poking their heads out.  The road sprouts filth while gardens sprout hopes of food and flowers.  Look for anything growing near the foundation of a building.  That’s where the heat is now and where plants want to grow; usually, on the sunny side of the street.

My picture for this week’s blog features a clover in honor of St. Patrick’s Day which will take place on next Tuesday, March 17, 2015, a day before my next blog.  This weekend, downtown Racine has a St. Patrick’s Day parade starting at noon on Saturday.  I’m sure there will be plenty of other activities and green beer. http://www.racinedowntown.com/stpats.html I’m assuming that Señor Zanza and Junior will be there, for one reason or the other. Sorry, but green beer doesn’t do it for me.  I need green herbs to really get off.  Then I get rather silly.  Then I fall asleep.

Next Friday, March 20, is the Spring Solstice.  Yahoo!  I mean, it doesn’t have the force of law behind it, but it’d be nice to say it’s springtime.  It would be nice to believe that it’s springtime.  It gives one hope.

I have to make up for some lost sleep time, my dears, so I’m cutting this short.  Thank you to everyone who read this blog.  I love my audience deeply.

"The cracks don’t pose a danger to motorists or others traveling across the bridge, but Public Works officials say the problem needs to be fixed to ensure the bridge is in working order ahead of boating season.

"The U.S. Coast Guard requires the city to staff and open and bridge by April 1 of each year.

"In a letter to the Public Works and Services Committee, Assistant Public Works Commissioner Tom Eeg explained that this winter, bridge inspectors had noticed problems with two parts of the bridge’s locking system — a tip lock and guide arm."

This damn bridge is a lemon.  I believe that's it's been closed for repair numerous times a year during boating season.  They're always working on it.

This illustrates to me the bullshit power of "New and Improved."  We had to give a ton of money to Main Marine because they claimed that the bridge would divert traffic away from them.  They ended up closing, anyway.

I remember the old bridge with wooden planks for a "sidewalk."  It worked fine.  But, no, someone had to spend taxpayers' money on something.

I used to drive down Main Street every day to see mom.  I hated it when the bridge was closed.  Now, it will affect me little.

Hello, my winter weary friends!  How are you?  This weather is ridiculous.  It’s March.  When does the warm up start?  I’m not asking for miracles, just some more seasonable weather.  It’s supposed to warm as the week progresses.  I hope so.  I’m sick of snow and ice and freezing rain.  Now, as the snow melts, comes the ugly snow banks showing dirt and trash that they’ve collected through the winter.

At least, I have “my boys” to do the snow removal around here.   Señor Zanza and Junior get the job done.  Junior expects some monetary compensation for doing a chore that I did many times as a youth without any payment.  Times have changed.  Junior knows better than to ask me, but Señor Zanza always pays him off.

Same old stuff in the city: robberies, burglaries, corruption and bribes.  The clock is running on the bar owners’ lawsuit against the city.  The legal fees must be astronomical, with plenty more to come.  Either way, we, the residents, lose.  It’s like hosting a party that you’re not allowed to attend.  Win, lose, or draw, we’re paying for it.  And we’ll probably never know the total cost.

Darn. Sometimes I so wish that I didn’t take an oath to not mess with lotteries, sports, etc.  The Psychics Association of America sets high standards for its members. Eh, the money would probably kill me.  But I’d die with a smile on my face.

Red Throated Loon!

Yesterday Drew and I went to Coal Dock Park in Port Washington Wi. Drew had heard that there was a Red Throated Loon that someone else had seen out there and he wanted to go and get some pictures of it. So we went out there to get some pictures. There was some people fishing in the harbor with the water fowl swimming and diving for fish. I can tell you one thing by the harbor up there and peaceful. We had a real experience there yesterday.

Drew was walking around and getting pictures of different water fowl and when he was done we were just about to leave and then we seen a Red Throated Loon flopping around in the water. The Loon got hooked by one of the fishemens hooks and you should have seen Drew jump out of the car and walk really fast over were the Loon was. There was another birder there too and he had a jacket to wrap the Loon in to calm it down. The fisherman brought the Loon out of the water with his net and to not only one hook out of the Loon but a total of three out. I saw Drew walking toward the car with the Loon and I started to make phone calls to see were we can take the Loon to get looked at. No answer at the Humane Society up there, no answer with the DNR, I called the police they came and had no answers for us so I called a friend of ours that is a birder in Milwaukee and she told me to take it to the Milwaukee Humane Society. So she sent me directions and she called to let them know we were on are way there with the Loon. I was driving with a Loon on Drew's lap and believe it the Loon was just at content as could be in the car on his lap but did not like getting out of the car and going in the building. I just wanted to pet the Loon but I was being good and just left him alone. He is at the Humane Society getting treated and we have a email address that we can keep in touch to see how he is doing.

I was talking to a man in the car next to be and he said the day before he hooked a Golden Eye Duck and he just left the hook in the duck and put him back in the water. That really upset me and I told Drew about that too.

"The latest attacks on innocent bystanders that have Dutch villagers cowering in their homes at night come not from armed extremists but from an unusually aggressive owl with a nearly 6-foot wingspan.

"Dozens of residents in the town of Purmerend have been attacked by the eagle owl in recent weeks, and many have had to seek medical attention for their wounds, the DutchNews website reported Thursday.

"The latest victims were an athlete and his trainer out for a run Tuesday night, when the owl swooped down with extended talons and inflicted head wounds that needed hospital treatment, the news site said. 

 

"The owl has also attacked at least 15 residents and workers at the Prinsenstichting home for the disabled, a spokeswoman for the facility told news agencies in Amsterdam.

"Authorities in Purmerend, about 20 miles north of Amsterdam, have issued an advisory recommending that those venturing outside at night, when the owl has been most aggressive, arm themselves with an umbrella to stave off attack by the nocturnal carnivore.

"A statement from the town council also said wildlife officials were trying to assess the level of danger posed by the owl to determine whether they should seek permission from conservation authorities to euthanize it. Eagle owls are a rare species and protected by law.

"NLTimes, another Dutch news website, said bird experts attributed the owl's unusual behavior to breeding season. Others, though, speculated that the owl, believed to be female, had been kept in captivity and released to the wild after it became too much to handle.

"The owl may be attacking people, the website said, because it was reared to associate humans with its food source.
