Racine County sheriff: Supervisor posted man's bail, should be removed

RACINE COUNTY, Wis. - Racine County Sheriff Christopher Schmaling on Wednesday, Nov. 24 called for the immediate removal of a county supervisor who allegedly posted a man's $10,000 bail.

Video provided to FOX6 News by Schmaling shows that man – identified as Adrian Jefferson – with a high-powered weapon. The sheriff said Jefferson is currently facing a multitude of charges, accused of stealing SWAT equipment from a SWAT operator's home; that includes a pistol, sniper rifle and another fully-automatic rifle.

Jefferson is also facing felony charges of armed robbery, carrying a concealed weapon and intentionally pointing a firearm at law enforcement, the sheriff said.

The man Schmaling wants to see removed from the Racine County Board of Supervisors is Nick Demkse. The sheriff provided a photo that he says shows Demske posting Jefferson's bail.

By law, Jefferson is entitled to bail set by the court. However, in a statement, Schmaling said the supervisor's actions "put the public in grave danger" – and called for his immediate removal.

Milwaukee County DA under fire for parade suspect's bail

MILWAUKEE - The Christmas parade was Sunday. The letter came Monday. Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm said the bail his office recommended for 29-year-old Darrell Brooks earlier this month was too low. Now, right-wing talkers and Republican politicians want the Democrat D.A. to pay the price. 

"I think he’s absolutely responsible," said State Rep. Cindi Duchow (R-Delafield).

State Rep. Duchow is a Republican. Chisholm is a Democrat. So it is no surprise they would disagree in policy. 

"This was not a little oops, this was a pretty darn big mistake," Duchow said. "I can’t imagine those parents sitting there with their kids, I mean… and I saw the… I’m sorry."

Duchow introduced a bill Tuesday to change the Wisconsin Constitution, allowing judges to consider public safety when setting the dollar amount of bail.

A day earlier, Chisholm issued a statement acknowledging the $1,000 bail posted by Brooks just days before the Waukesha Christmas Parade was too low.

"We can’t just keep opening up the doors and letting them out," Duchow said.

On Wednesday, Nov. 24, the New York Post called out Milwaukee's "Woke DA." 

Conservative radio host Jeff Wagner said Chisholm out to move on. 

"These chickens are coming home to roost," Wagner said. "If Chisholm really wants to own up and take responsibility, the only decent thing to do would be to resign."

Right-wing political consultant Brian Fraley suggested Gov. Tony Evers ought to take him out. 

"Do you believe this is serious enough that the DA should resign or be removed from office?" asked FOX6 Investigator Bryan Polcyn.

"I would prefer not to comment on that. I think if I were in his shoes, I would think maybe it’s time I stepped aside," Duchow answered.

Chisholm's number two, Chief Deputy D.A. Kent Lovern, said the district attorney was not available to talk on Wednesday. But Lovern said he would have a lot more to say next week.

As for Rep. Duchow's bail legislation, she said because it calls for a change in the Wisconsin Constitution, it would have to pass two consecutive legislative sessions – and then be approved by voters at the ballot box. The soonest that could happen, Duchow said, is spring 2023.

WAUKESHA, Wis. - A Ring doorbell camera at a Waukesha residence captured the moments leading up to the arrest Darrell Brooks, the man suspected in the Waukesha Christmas Parade tragedy.

The video from resident Daniel Rider shows Brooks knocking on Rider's door – and the later, police arriving to take Brooks into custody.

Brooks is expected to face five charges of first-degree intentional homicide for the five deaths associated with the Christmas parade. Many other counts are expected as nearly 50 people were hurt when an SUV barreled through the crowds watching the parade on Sunday, Nov. 21

The incident

On Sunday, a joyous scene of marching bands and children dancing in Santa hats and waving pompoms gave way in an instant to screams and the sight of crumpled bodies as the SUV sped through barricades and struck dancers, musicians and others in the community of 72,000.

Police identified those killed as Virginia Sorenson, 79; LeAnna Owen, 71; Tamara Durand, 52; Jane Kulich, 52; and Wilhelm Hospel, 81. Sorenson, Owen and Durand were members the Dancing Grannies club, and Hospel helped out with the group.

Another 48 others, including nearly 20 children, were injured in the incident. FOX6 News is monitoring for updates on their conditions. 

Interfaith vigil

An interfaith prayer vigil following Sunday’s tragedy during the annual Waukesha Christmas Parade was held at Cutler Park in Waukesha on Monday evening, Nov. 22. Hundreds of community members joined together on a frigid night, finding comfort in one another with a difficult journey ahead.

"Yesterday’s tragic event demonstrated the character of this community," said Waukesha Police Chief Dan Thompson. "When tragedy struck this great city, the community responded."

"It says that we are a community," said Mushir Hassan, Brookfield-Elm Grove Interfaith Network. "We are one community, and we are going to heal together. We grieve together right now, and we will heal together moving forward."

Waukesha is looking for strength and resilience as a long road ahead begins.

After tragic incidents like what unfolded at the Waukesha Christmas Parade, people in southeast Wisconsin seek ways to help those in need. Below is a variety of ways you can help and get involved in the process of healing.

Officials said in a Facebook post that Fatimah Abdul-Wahid left her residence early Tuesday morning, Nov. 23.

Video shows Kenosha shooter Kyle Rittenhouse punching a girl: report

A new video appears to show alleged Kenosha killer Kyle Rittenhouse slugging a girl in the Wisconsin city, according to a report.

The shocking footage, shot July 1 and posted to Twitter, shows a young man alleged to be Rittenhouse landing haymakers on an unidentified girl who was scrapping with another female teen, according to the Journal Times.

Two Kenosha men who filmed the melee — Reese Granville and CJ Wakefield — said the teen throwing the punches was Rittenhouse, the outlet reported. The slugger is also wearing the same American flag Crocs that Rittenhouse wears in a widely circulated photo of the accused shooter from Facebook.

The melee begins when two unidentified girls get into an argument as several other people look on, clips show.

Moments later, one of the girls gets into a scuffle with a third girl — then Rittenhouse can be seen landing several punches on one of them from behind.

A second clip shows Rittenhouse, wearing red, white and blue shorts, being kicked several times, with a male voice heard saying, “Do not put your hands on a female (expletive),” the Journal Times reported. That video has since been removed from YouTube.

A woman’s voice is heard yelling, “Hey, stop,” on a third video.

Rittenhouse, 17, is charged with first-degree intentional homicide in the shooting deaths last week of two Black Lives Matter protesters in Kenosha and with the wounding of a third man.

Prosecutors said the teen, who is being held in his home state of Illinois while he awaits extradition proceedings, shot and killed Joseph Rosenbaum, 36, last week while with an armed militia group seeking to protect businesses from looters.

Rittenhouse ran from the scene with protesters in pursuit but stumbled. Video from the night shows another man, 26-year-old Anthony Huber, swing a skateboard at the teen, before Rittenhouse gunned him down.

A third man, identified as Gaige Grosskreutz, 26, approached the teen and was shot in the arm. Images show that Grosskreutz was holding a handgun when he was shot.

Rittenhouse’s lawyers have argued the teen fired in self-defense

“Murder charges are factually unsupportable,” attorney L. Lin Wood said on Twitter last week. “An egregious miscarriage of justice is occurring with respect to this 17-year-old boy. I love truth & justice. I deplore lies & injustice.”

WAUKESHA, Wis. — In the wake of Sunday's deadly Christmas parade incident, health experts are offering ways for people to cope and ease some of the trauma you or a loved one may be feeling.

"This will leave a mark. It doesn't mean we can't live with that mark, it doesn't mean that we can't go on just fine, but this will leave a mark," said Dr. Steven Dykstra, a licensed psychologist and clinical program director for Milwaukee County's Behavioral Health Divison.

The wound is still fresh in Waukesha on Monday as parents, children, and the community try to come to terms with what happened just a day ago.

A driver, now identified as 39-year-old Darrell Brooks, sped through the city's Christmas parade where five people were killed and more than 40 others were injured.

"The people who saw it and experienced it and searched for loved ones afterward and went through that kind of trauma, they were injured too," said Dr. Dykstra.

Psychologists say experiencing something like this first-hand can be traumatizing for anyone, no matter your age. There are also a number of ways to help yourself, a child, or a loved one deal with the emotions they may be feeling.

"Fear, anxiety, sadness, grief, the whole spectrum of emotions is normal in the situation. Remember that it's a process. Some days you may feel okay, and everything's fine, you can go forward. And then, maybe later or the next day, you're back in this trauma response and feeling overwhelmed," said Dr. Jessica Juneau, a senior clinical psychologist with the Waukesha Department of Health and Human Services.

For those with children, experts say it's best to let kids express themselves, and talk them through what happened.

"We can approach children and ask them so what do you think? What do you remember about that? Talk about that. Discuss it with each other. Talk about how it made you feel, how frightened you were, how relieved you were," said Dr. Dykstra.

As posts of the tragedy circulate online, doctors say it's best for people to either limit their time or stay off of social media altogether.

"There's second-hand trauma for people who are seeing it. It's valid. You don't have to be in-person to experience it, in order for it to be traumatizing to you."

Kyle Rittenhouse tells FOX News he's 'not a racist person,' backs BLM

KENOSHA, Wis. - Kyle Rittenhouse, who was acquitted on charges stemming from killing two men and wounding another during the unrest that followed the shooting of a Black man by a white police officer, says in a new interview that he's "not a racist person" and supports the Black Lives Matter movement.

"This case has nothing to do with race. It never had anything to do with race. It had to do with the right to self-defense," the 18-year-old tells Fox News host Tucker Carlson in an interview set to air Monday night. Rittenhouse is white, as were the men he shot.

Rittenhouse was 17 last year when he traveled 20 miles (32 kilometers) from his home in Antioch, Illinois, to Kenosha, Wisconsin, which had been racked with protests in the wake of the Aug. 23 shooting of Jacob Blake. That shooting and the response in Kenosha — protests that turned destructive — became part of the national reckoning over police use of force against Black people following George Floyd's death in Minneapolis the previous May at the hands of police.

Rittenhouse, armed with an AR-style semiautomatic rifle, joined others who said they were intent on protecting private property from potential damage on Aug. 25. During his trial, prosecutors argued that the teenager as a "wannabe soldier" who went looking for trouble that night. Rittenhouse countered that he fired in self-defense after he was attacked and in fear for his life.

The shootings quickly made Rittenhouse a rallying cry for supporters of Second Amendment rights and those angered by the sometimes violent protests seen in some American cities after Floyd's death.

Rittenhouse was photographed in a bar before the trial with apparent members of the far-right Proud Boys. Rittenhouse's attorneys have said he is not a white supremacist.

"I’m not a racist person. I support the BLM movement, I support peacefully demonstrating," Rittenhouse tells Carlson in excerpts of the interview released by Fox News ahead of its airing.

A jury last Friday found Rittenhouse not guilty on charges of homicide, attempted homicide and reckless endangering in the deaths of Joseph Rosenbaum, 36, and Anthony Huber, 26, and the wounding of Gaige Grosskreutz, now 28.

Fox News host Tucker Carlson's special on the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol was the last straw for two network commentators. Stephen Hayes and Jonah Goldberg have resigned.

Two longtime conservative Fox News commentators have resigned in protest of what they call a pattern of incendiary and fabricated claims by the network's opinion hosts in support of former President Donald Trump.

In separate interviews with NPR, Stephen Hayes and Jonah Goldberg pointed to a breaking point earlier this month: network star Tucker Carlson's three-part series on the Jan. 6 siege of the U.S. Capitol that relied on fabrications and conspiracy theories to exonerate the Trump supporters who participated in the attack.

"It's basically saying that the Biden regime is coming after half the country and this is the War on Terror 2.0," Goldberg tells NPR. "It traffics in all manner of innuendo and conspiracy theories that I think legitimately could lead to violence. That for me, and for Steve, was the last straw."

Hayes has been a close friend of Fox News political anchor Bret Baier since their college days at DePauw University; both he and Goldberg were mainstays of Baier's Special Report since joining the network in 2009. Together, Hayes and Goldberg co-founded the conservative news site The Dispatch.

According to five people with direct knowledge, the resignations reflect larger tumult within Fox News over Carlson's series "Patriot Purge" and his increasingly strident stances, and over the network's willingness to let its opinion stars make false, paranoid claims against President Biden, his administration and his supporters.
