Dear Madame Zoltar

Hello, my cool cucumbers!  How are you?  We’re finally getting April weather in June.  I guess I should be glad that I don’t have to run the air conditioner very often, but I wonder if those “savings” don’t get spent on higher heating costs in colder winters.  If it stays this cool through fall, I’d say we’re in for another nasty, life-threatening winter.  It gets harder every year to put up with winter.  I love Christmas, but you can have the rest of it.  I’d love to hibernate for three months every year.  That would be a good excuse for putting on body fat, too.

I’m so glad that the police arrested those two alleged bank robbers.  It’s been quiet lately.  I find it hard to believe, but maybe those two guys alone robbed the bars and the banks.  I hope that’s true.  People would feel a little more secure in their homes and businesses.  I’m still locking my car and setting the alarm, I still lock my doors and windows at home.  I’ve always done that.

I do hope that Mr. Mayor Dickert will take some time to pat himself on the back for capturing these criminals.

And what about “Machinery Row,” the latest scam meant to attract Chicago millionaires who are idiots?  I think they said this project is going to cost $65 million.  Don’t worry, however, because the state is going to pay for most of it.  I’m so glad that the state has so much “free” money earned by the sweat of our brows.  It’s only tax money; it’s not like it’s real.

Junior is already getting antsy because the 4th of July is next week.  I reminded him of the power of firecrackers and the permanent damage that they can do.  I told him that if he blows off a finger this time, I’m not going to reattach it.  So far, so good.  But the firecracker tents will soon sprout up in empty parking lots.  It’s hard for a boy to ignore such a plethora of temptations.  I’ll tell you that if a straw buyer provides him with firecrackers, he/she will face the Wrath of Zoltar®!  They’re already too many things that “go bang” in our lives.  I must add that I’ve heard a reduction in the amount of illegal firecrackers exploding each year.  Thank you, Racine Police Department.

I don’t know about going to the parade and fireworks this year.  I’ll have to wear winter clothing.  I think I’ll stay home with the SeƱor.  Steaks on the grill for any Irregulars who stop by.  We’ll have a few beers and soda on ice, too, just in case.

That’s it for this week, my dears.  I appreciate your presence and responses.  I love the JTI.

Where to get illegal firecrackers?  Ask: madamezoltar@jtirregulars.com

It’s supposed to be cool for the next few days.  Wear a light jacket or tie a sweater around your neck.  Enjoy the summer, dears, no matter how you do it.  Lacustrine!

Racine Equality Project - Press Release

Press Release

Where:     City of Racine WI.        Racine County Courthouse     730 Wisconsin Avenue

When:      Wednesday June 25, 2014

Time:       12:00 PM

Subject:    Racine Equality Project Files 7 Count Complaint against Racine County Supervisor

The Racine Equality Project, in response to citizen concerns, has pursued an  investigation into the activities of certain elected officials and non elected public employees. This investigation has been done through examination of public records including tapes and transcripts of public meetings and statements by the parties being investigated. What we have found is very revealing, often disappointing and sometimes quite disturbing.

A press packet will be available

No, I Am Not Dead And Here Is a Pic of An ISS Pass To Prove It!

Been very busy recently and just wanted to drop in and say hi to let everyone know I am not dead! The JTI comes up in my feedly stream so I have been seeing all the posts but not able to respond much or post. Lots of events at work and as many of you know, we opened an improv theater here in Tucson in January. It is going well, but keeping me (and everyone else) very busy. Shows every Friday and Saturday night, I am teaching an improv class right now and running the tech booth for other groups that rent out our theater for shows. Hardly get to do much photography...although I am scheduled to go up Kitt Peak Friday night and the weather forecast looks promising!

But last night I got a pic of the ISS pass. It wasn't that long after sunset so the sky was still fairly bright. I used the brick wall in the courtyard of my townhome complex to block some nearby lights.

Tough to get many stars in that condition...but a nice little streak nonetheless taken during what photographers call "The Blue Hour" for obvious reasons!

I noticed that Racine is no getting good ISS passes this week while Tucson is. Interesting quirk of the orbit...this pass occurred on the descending node of the ISS orbit...now I am trying to work this out in my head and going to be distracted for a while (this is OCD and ADD kicking in at the same time...you get obsessed with something that distracts you from work).

WIldflowers Pt 4!

Yes another part to my wildflowers that I would like to share with everyone. The weather lately has not been cooperating to go out and get any quality pictures so I am going to post some that I have from other days. I hope you will enjoy these just as well.

This is a picture of Bluebells taken at Colonial Park in Racine Wi..

This is a picture of a Crested Dwarf Iris taken at Richard Bong State Recreational Area in Bristol Wi..

This is a picture of a Red and White Tulip taken at Swift Lake East Troy Wi. This was just on the side of the road by the trees.

This is a picture of a Oxeye Daisy taken at Pike River Pathway in Mount Pleasant Wi..

This is a picture of Swamp Rose taken at Pike River Pathway in Mount Pleasant Wi..

This is a picture of Dames Rocket taken at Shoop Park in Racine Wi. Now you can see these every place you go.

I have also seen the vines for Trumpet Creepers starting to get green so they will be blooming very soon with all the rain we have been getting. There is one on a pole on three mile road that I keep watching when I pass it.

I hope everyone enjoys the pictures and yes there will be more coming soon.

"Infant's arm broken by father having 'adult tantrum'"

From The Journal Times.com:

"RACINE - A Racine man is expected to be released from jail by tonight after he netted a probation term for fracturing his infant daughter's arm in January."

This is the stuff that drives me crazy.  This guy fractured his daughter's arm and fractured his son's arm and ribs.  His punishment: probation.

The judge, like all Racine judges, enables the guy to keep djrinking and beating his kids until someone is killed.  Then everyone will say, "How could this happen?"

Drinking does NOT cause you to beat your children.  I'm so sick of that lie.  Drinking is not an excuse to break the law or children's arms.  I'm a low-bottom alcoholic who caused major injury to myself by drinking, but I still would never think of harming a child.

I know a guy in AA who raped a two-year-old (I don't even wnat to think about it) and blames it on his alcoholism.  Bullshit!

By blaming this child abuser's drinking instead of the guy himself, Torhorst again enables more drinking and child abuse in Racine.

Our judges need to spend a few hundred hours in AA.  Then they might get it: you are responsible for your actions, drunk or sober, NO ONE ELSE.

"Bryan Albrecht And Gateway’s Unelected Board Add Another $7M In Debt"

From Racine Exposed:

"On 13 June, 2014 Moody’s reported that Gateway Technical College was preparing to issue $7,000,000 in bonds to finance equipment purchases and various building improvement projects.

"Note that the debt of Gateway, which is paid by property owners in the District and appears on property tax bills, will be $55.2M after the bonds are issued. Of course, The Journal Times failed to report the new borrowing and that the notes would be secured by the District’s unlimited tax pledge – which means it is to be added to District Taxpayers Property Tax bills."

Four for Fridays

Hello everyone and welcome back! It has been one of those weeks.... The same old, same old type of weeks. So nothing new is really happening here.... Anyways, your questions...

1) What was the last restaurant you went out to eat at?

2) How many cities have you lived in?

3) If you could start your own restaurant, what would it be?

4) What is your favorite cereal?

Enjoy your weekend!

"Heron Say, Just Don't be Bittern About It", Says Dr. Crane.

O.K. I have this thing for quirky titles.... Anyways, spring migration is long over and done. Everything has settled in making nests and raising young. The rare bird reports have dwindled to a few sightings. Now, I have a little more time to write.

Today's focus is on the large and medium sized wading birds of the heron and crane families. I'm sure many readers here have seen a few of them.... The basic difference between cranes from the herons are their necks. Herons and bitterns fly by keeping their necks retracted while cranes don't. There are 11 species of herons and bitterns that have been observed in Wisconsin. I've only seen 8 of them. Both of the species of cranes I've seen.

Starting off with the most common heron in Wisconsin, is the Great Blue Heron (picture below taken at Bong SRA 8 2 2013) Great Blue Herons can be found in most any pond, marsh, creek, bog and shoreline across the state. I've pretty much seen these graceful creatures everywhere. They'll eat most everything within striking distance including fish, frogs, snakes, small mammals and even ducklings. They build large nests high in barren trees, sometimes in colonies. These colonies are called rookeries. (There is a rookery at Nicholson Wildlife Refugee in Caledonia. It can be easily viewed from 4 Mile Rd and Nicholson).

Almost as common and often sharing the same habitat as the Great Blue Heron is the Great Egret (picture below taken at Smolenski Park in Mt. Pleasant 8 22 2012). Almost as large as a Great Blue Heron, their white, flamboyant plumage makes them a stand out in the tall reeds. General speaking, they are a bird from the South. Their range has increased over the years northward. I have been seeing them just north of Appleton, recently. Sure fire spots to see them are at Horicon Marsh, Bong and various ponds in the county. A great bird to see!

A close cousin of the Great Egret and a great find in Wisconsin is the Snowy Egret. Sticking closer the southern and southwestern American coastlines, they do sometimes wander inland as far as Wisconsin during migration. There are only a handful of sightings in Wisconsin, including one near Madison this spring, have been reported. This makes it a rare treat to see. I have only seen one out in California as shown in the picture below at Dana Point. (It's the little guy on the right, the other one is a Great Egret)

Another rare treat to see is a Tri-Colored Heron. Like the Snowy Egret, they are mainly found in the southern American coasts and a small handful of sightings reported here in Wisconsin, including one in Two Rivers this spring. My only sighting was at the Finday Rd VPA in Jefferson County near Whitewater.on 6 22 2013 (see picture below) I found about this guy through my eBird reports and made a small journey to find it. Glad I did!

Another good find is a Black Crowned Night Heron. As common as they are, they are hard to find. True to the name, these small and stocky birds spend their evenings and nights foraging on a diet of frogs, crayfish, fish, clams and small mammals. During the day, they can be found roosting in trees or hidden in the tall marsh reeds like the one I saw at Humbolt Park in Milwaukee 4 23 2014 (see picture below). I have only seen a few of these. Good places to find them are at Horicon Marsh and the Juneau Lagoon in Milwaukee.

Even more common than the Black Crowned Night Heron (and easier to find) is the Green Heron (see picture below taken at Myers Park in Racine on 5 15 2014. They can be found hidden among a tangle of branches on the marsh edges. Ever standing still and silent, they'll stake out prey of small fish and frogs. They of one of the few tool using birds in the world. They'll use a worm, a twig or a feather to lure a fish to its clutches. I have seen them at Smolenski Park, the Pike River Pathway between Hwy 20 and Spring Street and at Nicholson. They are known to breed at Trout Ponds on 4 Mile Rd.

More often heard than seen, a bird Tender Heart describes as her "nemesis", an American Bittern. This is a fun story to tell.... While driving slowly through Horicon Marsh Auto Tour & Trails, Tender Heart saw a medium sized brown bird snaking its way through the tall grass along side of the road. She stopped the car to ask me what kind of bird it that. The bird stood perfectly still to blend in the grass. It took me a second or two to see it, but I identified it as an American Bittern and handed her the camera (see picture below). That is the defense system for the bittern. They are the masters of camouflage! When threatened, they'll lift their heads up and stand still to fool one in thinking its a part of the surrounding tall reeds. When Tender Heart put the car in drive it resumed its stalking through the tall grass... Cool, huh? Since then Tender Heart has been searching high and low for another one. We have heard them at Bong and Horicon since them.

Much more easier find and much more common than the American Bittern is the Sandhill Crane (see picture below taken at Tichigan SWA 6 3 2012). Tender Heart and I often see these tall and graceful birds foraging in many farm fields and marshy areas all over the state. They are quite easy to spot from the road. They are known to form large flocks in the fall in preparation for migration. The best spots to find them are at Horicon Marsh and at Bong SRA.

The Holy Grail of findings is the close relative of the Sandhill Crane, the elegant and endangered Whooping Crane. If one is extremely lucky, they may find one of these rarities in a flock of Sandhills. Fewer than 600 Whooping Cranes remain in the wild. Up from 15 individual birds in the 1940's, tireless conservation efforts have reintroduced them to Necedah NWR and Horicon Marsh where they have bred successfully. The process is slow moving, many threats still remain. Accidental shootings (Sandhill Cranes are considered a game bird in some places), collisions with power lines, and Black Flies (during nesting season) poses some problems. Many observers have confused Whooping Cranes with Sandhill Cranes and Great Egrets. The Whooping Crane is the tallest bird in North America, white with a red cap. Sandhills are brown while the Great Egrets are smaller with NO red cap. Another great identifying mark is nearly ALL of the Whooping Cranes have leg bands and/or radio transmitters on their legs. Tender Heart and I were elated and lucky to see one at Horicon Marsh on May 17 2014 (see picture below)

I know it's a long blog, but with an amazing spring migration taking much of my time, I'd thought I'd bring readers up to speed of my latest sightings. That is, till fall migration....

Dear Madame Zoltar

Hello, my warming wits!  How are you?  It’s like someone threw a switch and now suddenly it’s hot.  Maybe soon there’ll be only two seasons: winter and summer. Or winterspring and summerfall.  Now I remember what it’s like to sit in traffic with a broken a/c as salty droplets form and fall from my forehead.  Still, I’ll take it compared to last January when it was 20 below zero.

It’s early in the season.  There’ll be many hot days over the next three months.  Let’s take them one day at a time.  And, if the hole in the ozone layer is 5 times previous estimates, it won’t matter anyway.  We’ll all be cooked or baked from the inside out.

Meanwhile, the weather on Earth is wacky.  There’s not much that we as individuals can do to stop the big polluters.  It’s all about the $.  It’s always about the $.

And I must admit that I benefit from much of the technology out there.  I use power that’s produced by coal.  So if it comes down to the environment versus Facebook, we all know that the environment will lose.

It’s cheaper for the major polluters to pay EPA fines than to meet their standards.  Oh my.

I see that our rash of robberies continues.  I’ll pray for Racine.  Anyone who knows anything about these crimes, please come forward with your knowledge.  You can do so anonymously. We have to “nip it, nip it in the bud.”  If we don’t get a handle on these crimes, the outside world’s “perception” of Racine may be negative.

Thank you all for stopping by here today.  I enjoy your company.  That goes for newcomers, too.

Know how to “nip it in the bud?” Ask: madamezoltar@jtirregulars.com

Enjoy summer activities while you can.  The weather is so changeable; it’s difficult to make plans.  I don’t think we need any more rain, but it looks like that’s what we’re going to get.  Still, that’s better than 20 degrees below zero.  Jobation!

“'Stop the Madness'-Know something? Say something! Solve Racine’s robberies and homicide"

From RacineUncovered:

"Racine County organizations and business owners have pulled together to try and help area police solve a series of armed and attempted armed robberies that have occurred over the last several weeks in the City of Racine and the Village of Mount Pleasant.

"Law enforcement has recorded a total of 21 incidents combined between the two communities, but so far, tips from citizens who might have information have been slow to come in to help police apprehend the suspects.

"A total of up to $6,500 in reward money is being offered to the individual(s) who provide the tip(s) that lead to the arrest of the suspects responsible for these crimes.

"Board members of Crime Stoppers of Racine County recently approved a maximum reward of up to $1,500.

"Two local business owners, who wish to remain anonymous, for now are each putting up $500 of their own money, and members of the Racine Tavern League have committed to a $4,000 contribution.

"Drivers Be Aware: Traffic Enforcement in Full Effect"

From Racine County Eye:

By Heather Asiyanbi in Government · June 13, 2014

"Area police officers are stepping up patrols as part of a statewide push to reduce traffic-related deaths.

"The Joint Speed and Alcohol Grant administered by the state Bureau of Traffic Safety covers overtime for officers at 100 percent so police can step up patrols of intersections to target speeding, drivers who aren’t wearing their seat belts, and drivers operating under the influence.

“'To prevent needless deaths and injuries, our officers will be out in force throughout the county as a cooperative effort looking for speeding and impaired motorists along with other unsafe driving behavior,' said Mount Pleasant police Captain Brian Smith.

"MPPD is the fiscal agent for the grant, and officers from Sturtevant, Racine, Wisconsin State Patrol, Waterford, Burlington,  and the Racine County Sheriff’s Department are participating in the push. It started last month and runs through September.

"During the grant period, officers from these agencies will patrol across jurisdictions and conduct deployments in the participating communities.

"Smith said a recent speed deployment on Spring Street in the City of Racine netted a number of citations. Officers staged another deployment in Mount Pleasant Friday.

"Sturtevant police Chief Sean Marschke noted 240 traffic calls/stops in that village in May and credits part of the increase to his department’s participating in the grant initiative.

“'We actually expect that number to rise because of the grant,' he said.

"Aside from increasing safety on area roadways, there is a financial gain for the communities where stops are being made. Marschke told village trustees that citations issued in Sturtevant means fines paid to the village no matter if the officer initiating the stop is from Sturtevant or not."

A Sincere Thank You, and an Incessant Rant from a Mad Woman...

First off, I'd like to say a HUGE and sincere thank you for allowing me to take part of the JT-Irregulars blogging group.  It is an honor to be able to participate in such a diverse group of intellectual bloggers.  I welcome intelligent discussion, whether you agree or disagree, and I welcome everyone who comments, to feel free to discuss your view point, because even if we disagree, I think understanding where the other side is coming from, is the key to being able to be more of the community that we all want.  A special thank you goes to "Lizard Mom", that I met at a Rely Local luncheon at Z's, for making this special invite...

I'd like to introduce myself as Lika, a mother of a pretty good 14 year old, and the founder of a registered 401c4 nonprofit called Youth Voice Initiative (YVI).  YVI was formed, to create social change to ensure that our children are not to be viewed as "property" of the parent(s) or legal guardian(s), to hold accountable child perpetrators.  From there, will be able to influence the legal system from the law makers, to the law practitioners, to the law interpreters, so we can stiffen up on those who abuse our children.  Too often, we don't want to "get involved", when we most often need to, since childhood abuse can lead to higher rates of drug and alcohol addiction and suicide than the rest of society.  Of these, sex and psychological abuses are the worst, and the victims are either blamed or ignored, enforcing the non-involvement to further victimize the abused child or survivor of child abuse.  I blog often, and would like to invite you to my blog site as well, here on blogger, Lika's Laments to take part in discussion, as well.

Anyway, even after this, I am really concerned about these 12 year olds who stabbed the other girl, after reading and playing into this Slenderman myth, found at creepypasta.com.  What gets me, is, it doesn't seem as if the parents were even slightly concerned where on the internet these girls went.  I allowed my son, who was almost 13 at the time, to finally get a facebook account, and I had ours linked together.  I also insisted that the friends list only included people I knew, or, even if I didn't, that someone such as his grandpa (who is a pastor) could vouch for, so there is no one there to raise an eyebrow.  And yes, I have the log in information, and yes, I do spy on his account.  If he changes his password or other settings on his profile, I get an email message that this happened.  I'm his mother, and it's my job.  My husband has parental controls set up, so he can see where my son goes while he's online.  I don't care if it sounds invasive, protective, or strict.  If the other parents would have done this, they could have intervened about the stabbing.

Worse yet, didn't any of the parents, teachers, classmates, guidance counselors, etc...  notice that the behaviors of these girls were off?  No one heard them discussing the urban myth?  No one knew about the plans of these two wanting to make a sacrifice by stabbing another classmate who was supposed to be a friend?  Didn't the parents teach their kids the difference between right and wrong?  I remember taking a psychology class in high school.  I learned that little kids, at the age of 3, understand the basic differences between right and wrong.  At age 5, kids have polished up that knowledge, even when they're being brutally honest.  Being that young, they haven't learned the concept of when it is it okay to tell little white lies, such as telling someone that their outfit is too little for them, when a young woman in their 20's is dressed a bit on the skimpy side, or that it's not nice to blurt out the fact that the color you're wearing doesn't look good on you.  But, aside from that, they know that lying, hitting and stealing is bad.  Telling the truth, paying for what you want, and keeping your hands to yourself is good.  So, why didn't these12 year olds know?  It's possible that the one is mentally ill.  Yet, if you look at them, they are NOT the innocent little girls that 12 year olds ought to be.  I also think their parents should have to account for part of the girls' bad judgement, especially because of the severity of the crime.  Another little girl has a lot of therapy to go through, and it shouldn't be up to her family to have to foot the bill.  The girls' who did the stabbing and their parents should be held financially responsible.  As for the outcome of the actual stabbing case?  We shall follow the news on the court proceedings.  May justice rule.
