State of Wisconsin Unclaimed Property

Check our friends at Racine News.

They have an article regarding unclaimed property for the State of Wisconsin.

I don’t have anything, but my uncle, aunt and brother do.

There are companies that look at these lists and then send you mail offering to fill out the paperwork for you to reclaim your property. They take a large cut.

I got a letter from one of these companies when I had a modest (~$300) chuck of change waiting for me. They wanted over $100 to "retrieve" it for me. I went to the web site and filled out he paperwork myself in under 10 minutes and got my check a few weeks later.

In short, don't pay the company...this is a very easy do it yourself thing.

I am in the process of doing this for my mom. When a company she dealt with changed hands, they typed WV instead of WI. All of the correspondence went to West Virginia... duh. No wonder it came back no such address.

Hale is right, not that complicated, just a huge hassle. You have to follow through, exactly, with everything that individual state requires.

The state that her property wound up in, wanted blood.... everything needs to be notarized to reclaim.

We need copies of medicare cards, driver's license, social security card, proof of address.... the list is long. All that trouble for a stupid typo!

Holy cow! I typed in my husband's name (my husband is JAK, btw) and we have unclaimed property. We are completely perplexed as to what it could possibly be!

A few years ago I searched my parents' names for unclaimed property and they came up as having unclaimed money from a class action lawsuit, that they didn't even know about, against a real estate company that they had used 10 years ago. All they had to do was supply their social security numbers and they got a check for about $900.

My husband supposedly does...it was an old safe deposit box he had with his brother...he said it was worthless...nothing in it...but yet, I think their names will appear.
