RACINE — A Racine man was reportedly hospitalized Sunday for a collapsed lung after his roommate allegedly stabbed him while yelling homophobic slurs.

Anthony M. Harrison, 55, of the 1800 block of Marquette Street in Racine, has been charged with attempted first degree intentional homicide with domestic abuse assessments as a repeater and use of a dangerous weapon.

Racine County District Attorney Tricia Hanson explained in an email that the reason Harrison isn’t facing hate crime charges is: “There are enough facts, outside of those in the complaint, to indicate that the defendant did not intentionally select the victim because he was gay (and that) the two were fighting over household duties as they were roommates. Once the fight began, the defendant began using homophobic slurs.”

Under Wisconsin’s “hate crimes” law, §939.645, a crime can be considered a hate crime only if the crime “is committed or selects the property that is damaged or otherwise affected by the crime … in whole or in part because of the actor’s belief or perception regarding the race, religion, color, disability, sexual orientation, national origin or ancestry of that person or the owner or occupant of that property, whether or not the actor’s belief or perception was correct.

Racine calls for complaints over 2020 election to be thrown out, as does state elections administrator

RACINE — In October, a federal judge ruled it was permissible for communities to accept grants from private organizations to fund their presidential election operations. Eight months later, the City of Racine and the Wisconsin Elections Commission, along with a number of other cities, are still dealing with complaints about that topic.

This week, the City of Racine and Wisconsin Elections Commission Administrator Meagan Wolfe filed responses to one of the complaints they’re facing that alleges “Racine failed to comply with state laws” by accepting grant funds with conditions for the operation of the 2020 presidential election, even though no state laws ban such action.

In a response to the complaint, notarized Monday, the city claims that the complaint is “inaccurate, misstated, and inflected with bias.” The complaint was received by the WEC on April 23.

Before the complaint goes before the full WEC, the group that issued the complaint has until June 29 to reply to the city’s reply.

“Until the reply is received and we have done a complete analysis of all materials filed in the matter — which number in the hundreds of pages — we cannot comment on the next procedural steps,” attorneys Jon P. Axelrod and Deborah C. Meiners, who work with the WEC, said in an email.

Rockford signs labor agreement for construction of Hard Rock Casino

 ROCKFORD (WREX) — Rockford is one step closer to building a casino.

The City of Rockford signed a labor agreement with several trade groups. Among the groups that will be involved in building the casino is Illinois Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local Union 364 and Ringland-Johnson Construction, which is based in Cherry Valley.

There is no date set for when construction would start. Construction plans still must be approved by the Illinois Gaming Board.

Australia: Private All Men’s Organization Votes to Continue Not Allowing Women to Join

 

It is now an international scandal if a small private club in Australia refuses to allow women to join.

The Guardian:

Members of an elite all-male “gentlemen’s club” in Sydney have voted against allowing women to join their ranks.

The Australian Club said on Tuesday that a “record turnout” of members at the special general meeting voted on the resolution, which would have amended the club’s constitution to allow female members.

“The meeting determined that the 75% threshold to pass the resolution was not met,” the club said in a statement.

The Macquarie Street club’s members include former Liberal prime ministers John Howard and Malcolm Turnbull. Both declined to comment on the outcome of the vote.

The Sydney Morning Herald reported that 693 member votes were cast with 62% against allowing women members, 37% in favour and 1% abstaining. There had been a campaign over several years for an amendment to the constitution.

Women are allowed to attend the club as guests. It was founded in 1838.

The Labor MP Andrew Leigh criticised the vote, which came after the club received more than $2m in jobkeeper payments that it decided not to repay despite doubling its surplus.

According to its website, “tradition and modernity have been skilfully blended” at the club, which provides “excellent dining facilities, en-suite bedrooms and apartments, a fully equipped gym [and] … first-rate business facilities”.

It is one of several Australian clubs that still prevent women from becoming members including the Melbourne Savage Club.

They are eventually going to make this illegal.

The reason this is international news is that women are propelling it into the international news cycle so that they can stir up widespread outrage and try to force their way into the club. Once they are in, they will proceed to destroy it.

Women are like cockroaches. They just crawl in everywhere, and try to get involved in anything. They get involved in things that they have zero interest in, simply to cause drama and make themselves the center of attention.

Aaron Rodgers isn't done sending messages to the Green Bay Packers.

During a press event to promote "The Match," the charity golf exhibition that will feature Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady and golfer Phil Mickelson against Rodgers and golfer Bryson DeChambeau, Rodgers showed up wearing a black T-shirt with block white letters that read: "I'M OFFENDED" and had an emoji with an angry face.

This was Rodgers' first public appearance since Packers president Mark Murphy called Rodgers a "complicated fella" over the weekend.

Rodgers, known for being one of the most calculated professional athletes in the public comments he makes, had a clear intention about the way he described his offseason.

"It has been one of those quiet offseason you dream about," Rodgers said sarcastically. "You just kind of go through your process on your own, quietly. That's all you can ask for as an older player in the league and someone who has been around for a long time and just enjoy that time for yourself and be relaxed and not be bothered, not have any obligations and not have anything going on.

"I think that's what this offseason has been about. It has been about really enjoying my time and spending it where I want to spend it and not feeling like I have to go anywhere and not feeling like I have any responsibilities, but still being an NFL player at the same time. It has been great."

Rodgers skipped Green Bay's mandatory minicamp last week as a show of his frustration and displeasure with the Packers organization. Aside from being a guest host of the television quiz show "Jeopardy!", Rodgers-related content has also dominated the NFL media cycle with more reports about his simmering discontent surfacing.

Amid a reckoning over law enforcement that is roiling the nation, Milwaukee residents by nearly 2-1 give low ratings to the city’s police department, a new Suffolk University/USA TODAY Network Poll finds.

The survey, the first in a series in major American cities, explores attitudes toward law enforcement at a critical moment. Cellphone footage of George Floyd being killed last spring by a Minneapolis police officer, and a string of other videos showing deadly police action against Black Americans, have fueled outrage and upheaval across the country.

In Milwaukee, a third of those surveyed (35%) say the city's police are doing an excellent or good job, but 61% assess their performance as fair or poor. Concerns about police practices cross racial lines but the assessment among Black residents is particularly harsh: Just 1% say the department is doing an “excellent” job.

"Who are they going to serve and who are they going to protect?" Jason Brooks, 39, asked skeptically. A Black man who was interviewed after being called in the poll, he said he had been the victim of racial profiling by Milwaukee police. "I've been stopped a couple of times for what they considered suspiciously walking," the professional wrestler said. "Like, I don't know how you walk suspiciously."

Bob Roden is looking at the sky and praying for rain.

Last week, the farmer from Roden Echo Valley Farm near West Bend in Washington County said that without rain, his crops might last three or four more days.

But despite the tantalizing promise of scattered thunderstorms on Saturday, none of the rain reached Roden's farm. Even worse, there's no guarantee that a good, soaking rain will reach him anytime in the next 10 days.

Southeastern Wisconsin is in a "severe drought," according to the U.S. Drought Monitor, and though experts hope it will start to rain soon, the thunderclouds aren't rolling in yet.

Southeastern Wisconsin has a precipitation deficit of about 6 inches going back to the beginning of March, according to Sarah Marquardt, a service hydrologist at the Milwaukee/Sullivan National Weather Service station.

This extended period of below-normal rainfall causes "meteorological drought," one of the several definitions of drought that led to the U.S. Drought Monitor's "Severe Drought" designation.

18 shot in Milwaukee in 3 days 'mind-boggling,' city leaders say

MILWAUKEE - The violence continued Monday, June 14 in Milwaukee after a violent weekend. A triple shooting left a 30-year-old Milwaukee man dead and two others hurt Monday afternoon. Police said shots were fired at a vehicle and the three people were struck, seeking help near 51st and Capitol Drive. 

About two and a half hours later, a 66-year-old Milwaukee woman was seriously wounded when she was shot while in a vehicle near 76th and Green Tree.

This, after three weekend shooting deaths in Milwaukee. Fifteen others who survived weekend gun violence.

Education, reducing poverty and the community working together are some of the possible solutions being discussed by city leaders on the heels of the bloodshed.

High-speed chases result in house arrest

A Sturtevant man faces multiple charges after a series of high-speed chases through Racine County in an SUV, court documents show.

Marquis Thomas, 21, faces one count of disorderly conduct, two counts of attempting to flee or elude an officer, three counts of obstructing an officer, and two counts of second degree recklessly endangering safety following a series of incidents in the early morning hours of April 20, according to a criminal complaint filed May 5 in Racine County circuit court.

Mount Pleasant police were called to the parking lot of the Oakes Road Walmart Supercenter at about 3:18 a.m. in response to a black Chevy Tahoe that had repeatedly circled the Walmart parking lot.

On arrival, an officer spotted a man parked between the Walmart and the nearby Wendy’s restaurant. When a responding officer exited his patrol car, the driver of the Tahoe looked at the officer, then put the Tahoe in drive and sped off onto Durand Avenue, according to the complaint.

The Tahoe fled east on Durand Avenue through the Highway 31 intersection. Officers initiated a chase through local streets and parking lots of local businesses reaching 84 miles per hour, police wrote.

The Mount Pleasant officer ended pursuit at the intersection of Lathrop Avenue and 21st Street but followed the vehicle’s trail to see if a wreck occurred.

However, a short time after Mount Pleasant police broke off pursuit, Racine County Sheriff’s Sgt. Troy Ruffalo spotted the Tahoe at the intersection of Highway 31 and Byrd Avenue, and followed the vehicle north of Highway 31, then attempted a traffic stop. The Tahoe initially stopped near the intersection with Village Center Drive but sped off again, according to the complaint.

Law enforcement officials followed, with pursuit speeds eventually reaching 93 miles per hour as the vehicle drove West on Washington Avenue.

Multiple retail theft cases draw bail-jumping charge

A man initially charged with misdemeanor theft now also faces a misdemeanor bail-jumping charge, according to court documents.

Matthew William Cruz, 40, of Milwaukee originally faced one count of misdemeanor retail theft in a complaint filed in January in connection with the removal of two cell phones from the Durand Avenue Target, according to court documents.

Racine police responded to the Target on Nov. 16 after contact from a loss prevention officer at the store. The security guard told them a person he believed to be named “Matthew Cruz” had taken two cell phones – an LG K51 and a Samsung Galaxy A11 – from the electronics section, gone several aisles away, removed both phones from their packaging, and put them in his coat, according to the complaint.

Neither phone was ever recovered, according to the complaint.

Cruz was out on bond in another case filed on Nov. 23, 2019, in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin Circuit Court documents show, which led to the addition of the bail jumping charge, according to the complaint.

A review of Wisconsin Circuit Court records shows a man with Cruz’s name, address, and date of birth has open retail theft cases in Washington, Racine, and Milwaukee Counties for retail theft. In some court cases, Walmarts and Targets are identified as the targets.

Past convictions result in bail-jumping

Filings in the latest case show Cruz has past convictions for misdemeanor trespassing in Hillsborough County, Georgia in 2016, Felony Aggravated Kidnapping and Kidnapping in Cook County in 2012, and retail theft charges from Milwaukee County in 2007 and 2009.

Cruz is identified as a prisoner as of June 7, when he was listed in custody by the Racine Police Department and made an initial appearance.

As a result of the initial appearance, Cruz was released on a $100 cash bond, with a condition of release being no contact with Target or Rogan’s Shoes stores.

The retail theft charge for the most recent case carries a nine-month prison sentence and a fine of $10,000 on conviction. The bail jumping charge carries identical penalties.

 A status conference for the case is scheduled for Aug. 9 at 8:30 a.m.

At least 8 people hospitalized after a car plowed into a crowd at a Texas racetrack

Eight people were injured when a vehicle drove into a crowd at a Texas racetrack.

 (CNN)At least eight people were hospitalized after a car plowed into a crowd at a mud racing event in Texas on Sunday night, officials said.

Three people were in critical condition and five others suffered non-life threatening injuries, the El Paso County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.

"The preliminary investigation revealed one of the vehicles due to unknown reasons left the mud-track striking and breaking through a guard rail," the release said.

The vehicle also struck three other vehicles in the initial crash, according to the release.

Roberto Tovar, who captured video of the moment the vehicle lost control and veered into the crowd, told CNN he was OK following the heart-stopping experience.

In his video, people can be heard screaming as the vehicle begins to fishtail and strike a cone before the video goes dark.

Another video of the immediate aftermath of the incident shows what appears to be a white pickup truck underneath spectator tents.

At least one person is seen on the ground while someone kneels next to them with chairs and a barrel-like barrier knocked over.

A few feet away, a green tractor-type vehicle and another unidentifiable vehicle appear to also have gone through some kind of barrier and are under blue spectator tents, with a group of people gathered behind the scene.

Authorities did not release any additional details on the incident, including the conditions of the drivers or identities of the victims.

The incident occurred in Fabens, Texas, about 40 miles southeast of El Paso and less than a mile from the Mexican border.
