Omicron Wisconsin's dominant COVID variant after 4 weeks

From Fox6Now:

The omicron variant is now the dominant COVID-19 variant in Wisconsin, taking just four weeks. While early data suggests the illness may be milder, health experts say its ability to spread should be sounding alarm bells.

In just four weeks, the omicron variant of the virus that causes COVID-19 has become the dominant strain in Wisconsin, according to the state health lab.

"When it comes to transmissibility, there’s no doubt," said Dr. Ben Weston, Milwaukee County chief health policy advisor. "The data shows it’s really off the charts; two to 10 times as transmissible as delta."

Delta, the previous strain, was more contagious than the one that preceded it, which is why Dr. Weston says this should be your plan:

  • If you're not vaccinated, get it scheduled.
  • Get your second shot or a booster shot if you're eligible.
  • Toss aside that cloth mask in favor of a higher quality mask, like the KN95.

"The vaccine seems to be effective," said Dr. Weston. "Still, the booster is much more effective, so that’s why it’s so critical to get boosted."

Hospitalizations are also on the rise. As of Tuesday, Dec. 29, there are nearly 1,700 COVID-19 patients in Wisconsin hospital beds; more than 400 in the ICU, according to the Wisconsin Hospital Association, with most of that coming in previous waves of variants.

Early evidence suggests omicron is less severe, especially for those who are vaccinated and boosted, but since it's more contagious, that worries Dr. Weston.

"When you have that much more transmissibility, you have to drop your severity quite a bit to even out your hospitalizations, and I’m not sure this severity drops that much," he said.

Odds are with the holiday season and demand for testing, Weston says, unfortunately, we will see whether that's the case here shortly.

Weston says if you need information on reputable places to get tested or schedule your vaccines, you can go to HealthyMMKE.com.

Advocate Aurora Health takes out newspaper ads seeking public's help to combat COVID-19

From JSOnline:

With full-page newspaper ads, Advocate Aurora Health is asking for the public's help in tackling the coronavirus pandemic.

"We can't stop COVID without you," said the ads that ran Sunday in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Green Bay Press Gazette and Chicago Tribune.

The effort follows similar moves made by health care systems in Cleveland and Minnesota, which are dealing with a surge of cases and the uncertainty created by the omicron variant.

An inspirational message is pinned to a bulletin board behind the nurse's station in the intensive care unit at Aurora West Allis Medical Center in West Allis.

According to a news release, Advocate Aurora, "currently has nearly three times more COVID-19 patients at its 26 hospitals across Illinois and Wisconsin than it did just eight weeks ago. That’s more than at any other point this year. As a result, beds are filling up and wait times can be long."

The statement said the "strain on our frontline is undeniable. The doctors, nurses and countless others who have so skillfully and compassionately cared for our communities are hurting."

The advertisement said that "more than 90% of all COVID inpatients are unvaccinated or due for a booster."

The ad asked for people to get fully vaccinated, to wear a mask in public indoor settings and for those who feel sick to stay home and get tested.

Packers fans celebrate Rodgers' record-setting Christmas game

From Fox6Now:

The Green Bay Packers' win was another Christmas gift for fans Saturday, as was Aaron Rodgers' record-breaking performance.

Kelly's Bleachers is open 365 days a year, including what turned out to be an exciting Christmas Day for sports fans in Milwaukee.

"I mean, we had the Bucks game on, the Packers game on, everyone was cheering. It was great to see. Milwaukee loves its sports," Packers fan Derek Hoppe said.

The first Packers touchdown of the day was not just any six points; it was Rodgers' 443rd touchdown pass – breaking Brett Favre's record for passing scores in a Green Bay uniform.

"It was pretty amazing. I had no idea that it was going to happen today, and it was pretty cool. He seemed pretty excited on the screen," said Packers fan Julie Tric.

Sports fans watch the Packers and Bucks at Kelly's Bleachers on Christmas Day

"On Christmas? Hey, that’s pretty cool, too," Packers fan John Seidl said. "A little present for himself and for all the fans here."

Roughly 10 minutes after Rodgers made history, the Bucks secured a come-from-behind win over the Boston Celtics.

All the cheering was a welcome sound for business owners who almost didn't make it to Christmas this year.

"After last year with COVID, it was a very difficult year. We almost went under," said Patrick Guenther, co-owner of Kelly's Bleachers. "We came back strong with the Brewers season, obviously sports is a big part of our business."

After Rodgers broke the record, Favre came on the video board with a message congratulating him – and telling Rodgers to go get another Super Bowl.

Packers beat Browns; Aaron Rodgers sets franchise TD mark

From Fox6Now:

Aaron Rodgers surpassed Brett Favre to become the Green Bay Packers' all-time leader in touchdown passes and the defense intercepted Baker Mayfield four times in a 24-22 victory over the Cleveland Browns on Saturday.

Rodgers went 24 of 34 for 202 yards with three touchdown passes to increase his career total to 445. Favre threw 508 touchdown passes during his Hall of Fame career, 442 of them with Green Bay.

But it was Green Bay’s defense that sealed the victory by sacking Mayfield five times and forcing him into his first career four-interception performance. All three of the Packers’ touchdowns came after Mayfield interceptions. The Packers (12-3) sealed the victory when Rasul Douglas picked off his second pass of the day with 43 seconds left.

Mayfield was 21 of 36 for 222 yards with two touchdowns as well as those four picks in his return from the reserve/COVID-19 list, which caused him to miss a 16-14 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders on Monday.

Nick Chubb ran for 126 yards and a touchdown to lead the Browns’ 219-yard rushing effort that kept them in the game.

Missing at least eight regulars because of complications related to COVID-19, the Browns trailed 24-12 in the third quarter but nearly came all the way back.

Cleveland (7-8) narrowed the deficit to 24-22 on Mayfield’s 5-yard pass to Anthony Schwartz with 4:31 left. The Browns then forced a punt and got the ball back at their 25 with 2:05 and three timeouts remaining. They had third-and-10 at the 50 when Douglas picked off Mayfield's pass intended for Donovan Peoples-Jones at the 40.

Darnell Savage and Chandon Sullivan also had interceptions. Rashan Gary had two of the Packers' five sacks against the Browns, whose offensive line was decimated with left tackle Jedrick Wills and center JC Tretter both on the COVID-19 list.

Until the Browns produced their second-half threat, the day belonged to Rodgers, who broke Favre’s record by throwing an 11-yard TD pass to Allen Lazard in the first quarter.

Rodgers spent his first three NFL seasons backing up Favre before taking over in 2008. Favre sent a message to Rodgers in a video that aired on the Lambeau Field scoreboard after the record-breaking touchdown pass.

"Hey, 12, congratulations, man, on passing my touchdown record," Favre said. "I have one request. Go get us another Super Bowl. Congrats."

Rodgers later threw two touchdown passes to Davante Adams, who had 10 catches for 114 yards. Adams has caught at least 10 passes for 100 yards and two touchdowns in eight career games, the most of anyone in NFL history.

The Packers already have clinched the NFC North title and are seeking the conference’s top playoff seed as they chase their first Super Bowl berth since their 2010 championship season. They have lost in the NFC championship game each of the last two seasons.

Coaching milestone

Packers coach Matt LaFleur is now 38-9 in the regular season. The victory Saturday enabled LaFleur to match George Seifert’s record for most wins by a head coach in his first three seasons.

Seifert had a 38-10 regular-season record in his first three years.

Injured

Rodgers went to the locker room late in the first half after aggravating his toe injury but didn't miss a down. Rodgers has been playing with a fractured left pinky toe. Packers guard Royce Newman appeared to step on the injured toe inadvertently. ... Packers DL Tyler Lancaster left in the fourth quarter.

Up next

Browns: visit the Pittsburgh Steelers on Jan. 3.

Packers: host the Minnesota Vikings on Jan. 2 in their regular-season home finale.
